Scottish Names.

From the book of Scottish Surnames is given the following:

Maccrae, Maccrea, Maccree, Maccrie, and Macrie are all Ayrshire forms of Macrae. A common old form of the name in Ayrshire was Makrie in 1586, and Makrieth. in Cumnock 1538. John Makra was a messenger in Ayr in 1621. Robert McCrie was charged with being disorderly person in the parish of Carsfern in 1684. William McKrie was a flesher in Dunbar in 1688. Allan McKree was Surgan in Ayr and was admitted a burgess of Prestwick in 1733.
Macra,1631, Mckra 1699, and in 1684 McRaie, McCrea, McCree, Mckrae, Mckrie and McRae.

What we have to remember is that not many people in those days could read and write and these names were passed by word of mouth to a scribe for official documents like birth, baptism, marriage and death records.

Peter McCrae, West Cumbria, England
