I am trying to find my wifes Great,Great, Great Grandfather believed to be Ben McCrea. He is believed to have had a Sports or menswear shop in Dumfries in the mid 1800s. He had two daughters, Mary who married a man called Walmsley and lived in Blackburn, and Margaret who is believed to have married a Russian (Kisalovski ?) and moved to Italy.

I finally found George McRea, age 25 in the 1860 Federal Census. He was a miner in Todd's Valley, Placer County Ca, His birth year would be about 1835,which would be correct. I am estimating he married Mary Eliza around 1866 in San Francisco. Thanks

I can't seem to find the information about him in the Placer County Census. As I recall he was working as a miner up there for a while. I will keep looking. He was in Austin,Lander County, Nevada when his son Edward was born 15 Nov 1867 and daughter Mary (Molly)17 Jul 1870. He worked worked in the mines as an engineer, I think. I have seen the name George W. McRea with connections to California before. My George McRea was going to school in San Francisco studying mineing when he met Mary Elizabeth. They were married in a Catholic Church in San Francisco. George W. is a possible, I should look closer at him. Mary Elizabeth left him in Austin and took the children back to San Francisco, she couldn't stand the conditions around the mines. They never got back together. Thanks

The McCrae surname and its variations

I have been studying the McCrae variations and without getting sidetracked on to "K's and Y's" and others the variations work out as follows.

MAC
rae, rea, ree, rie, ra, re.

MACC
rae, rea, ree, rie, ra, re.

MC
rae, rea, ree, rie, ra, re.

MCC
rae, rea, ree, rie, ra, re.

As you can see there are four main prefixes and six variations to each group. This gives a total of twenty four different ways of spelling McCrae.

A good many of the McCrae's (and all variations) came in the 1600's from Ireland through the Solway ports and moved up through Scotland from the south to-wards Ayrshire and other Scottish counties.
With the Gaelic root of RA or RATH we find MACRATH. In Lowland Scotland we find the prefix CC and MCCRAE the Gaelic root was lost.
So on average the Highlanders used MACCRAE, for Ayrshire and the lowlands etc the MCCRAE was in use. The American version came as MCCREA and as usual there was an exception to every rule.

Peter McCrae
McRea McCrea, McRae

I am looking for the parents’ or siblings’ names associated with Margaret McRea. Possible spellings of the last name are McCrea or McRae. One book about Montana history gives her first name as Elizabeth, but I believe she went by Margaret or Maggie. According to a family Bible, Margaret was born in Roxboro, Canada in 1851. She lived for a time in Minnesota and married Andrew Jackson Sperry there. Andrew Sperry and his brother, Bert (Burton) had already been to Montana, and in 1869, Andrew returned to Minnesota to marry Margaret. Andrew and Margaret were married on 16 April, 1870 in Minnesota, and then came to Montana, where they settled. Margaret was the daughter of a minister. She died on 30 July, 1933, in Vancouver, Washington. Andrew died in Missoula, Montana, on 9 January, 1908. I have been looking for information about Margaret for many years and would appreciate any help I can get.

A Please contact David W. Henrich richhen@in-tch.com

Scottish Names.

From the book of Scottish Surnames is given the following:

Maccrae, Maccrea, Maccree, Maccrie, and Macrie are all Ayrshire forms of Macrae. A common old form of the name in Ayrshire was Makrie in 1586, and Makrieth. in Cumnock 1538. John Makra was a messenger in Ayr in 1621. Robert McCrie was charged with being disorderly person in the parish of Carsfern in 1684. William McKrie was a flesher in Dunbar in 1688. Allan McKree was Surgan in Ayr and was admitted a burgess of Prestwick in 1733.
Macra,1631, Mckra 1699, and in 1684 McRaie, McCrea, McCree, Mckrae, Mckrie and McRae.

What we have to remember is that not many people in those days could read and write and these names were passed by word of mouth to a scribe for official documents like birth, baptism, marriage and death records.

Peter McCrae, West Cumbria, England.
