Hello all - I descend from Austin Bush line in Castlewood VA -the exerpt from a book made me curious to know where Austin's home was - in deeds it is always called "the mansion" and the land is referred to as the "Russian Place" It sounds like the house stood and was lived in by McReynolds as late as the 1850's because it states that James Davis, grandson of Joseph was born in the house.
Please let me know if any of this rings any bells!
Thanks a million - Julie

p. 215-6, "Pioneer Recollections of So. West VA" by Elihu Jasper Sutherland, Pub. 1984.

Recollection of J.D. McReynolds, Feb. 19, 1930, St. Paul, VA. He was a grandson of JOSEPH McREYNOLDS:

"My grandfather lived at the Austin Bush Place, back of Minneapolis, near Dr. Meade's. He married Rebecca Bush, daughter of Austin Bush. He was a farmer all his life. I believe he was a constable at one time. His Bible was lost with its family record.. His children were:

"BOB McReynolds lives at Knoxville, Tennessee, if alive. He was there the last I heard from him. I don't know who he married, but it took place somewhere about Blountville. His children's names are unknown to me.

"JIM McReynolds (my father) lived at the Austin Bush place awhile, then moved to mouth of Russell Creek; then, when the railroad was built, he moved to Moccasin Creek where he died. He married SALLIE KILLIAN, the daughter of an Irishman. Their children were: Taylor, Bob, Fletch, Sylvester, David, Sarah ("Sim"), Eliza, Harriett, Matthew, Margaret, Nancy, Mary and James Davis (myself). I am called "Jim I" The Bushes nicknamed me that when I was a boy.

"MACK McReynolds lived near Coeburn and below St. Paul. He married FANNIE DERRYFIELD, and their children were: Bob, George, Nancy, Patsy and another one who was killed and whose name I do not know.

"JOE McReynolds lived about Finney. Married MARY COLLINS. Children: Bradley and several others whose names I do not know.

"POLLY McReynolds never married. She lived about the Bush Place and died tolerably young.

"PHOEBE McReynolds married _____LEATHERWOOD and just after the Civil War. He had come here from Georgia and served in the war. After marriage, they went back to Georgia. I just barely recollect them. Children's names unknown to me.

"JANE McReynolds married _____ and lived in the old settlements of Kentucky awhile, then to Chicago, where their daughter wrote me while I kept store on Lick Creek. I forgot the daughter's name, andI know nothing more about them.

"FANNIE McReynolds never married. She lived in Castlewood.

"There may have been other children.

"Grandfather McReynolds had another brother named JOHN. He went to Knoxville, Tennessee, where he raised a large family. Some of them became lawyers. I barely recollect seeing him as he came by father's as he went there.

"My grandfather McReynolds used to vist Ambrose Hay near Sand Lick, in Dickenson County now, when I was small. Ambrose's wife was some akin to Grandpa."
