I am only married to a Diffey, so I know nothing about their family tree, but my husband's father is Thomas Gordon Diffey who was born in Mississippi and grew up in Anguilla, Mississippi. McShan's in Louisiana

I am trying to find a specific family of McShan's who lived in Sabine County, Louisiana. More specifically the eventual whereabouts of Lula Bell (or Vell) McShan (b: Aug. 1896). Lula is found in the 1900 U.S. Census living in Sabine County, Louisiana with her paternal grandmother Caroline McShan, her father Huston H. " ", mother Emaline (or Emeline) " ", sister Dolan " ", and her brother Wesley John " ". Her grandmother, parents and sister are noted as being born in Texas, while her brother and her were born in Louisiana. In the 1910 Census her mother is listed as a widow. So, her father must have died between 1900-1910. Additionally, she had another sister named Laura " ". They were no longer living with her paternal grandmother. Also, the family is listed as "black" in the 1900 census, but as "mulatto" in the 1910 census. ANY information on any of the above people would be greatly appreciated. She did marry and/or had 3 daughters with Jenks Handy of Louisiana between 1913 and 1917 . She either abandoned her children or died, but after 1920. So, its been very hard to find information on her.

NEHEMIAH BURROUGHS "BURR" McSHAN, b. 1824, Greene Co., AL, married MISSOURI ANN MUSGROVE, b. 1824, Jasper, Walker Co., AL, in Tuscaloosa Co., AL on 26 Oct 1849. She was a daughter of Dr. Edward Gordon Musgrove and Rachael Hickland. The marriage record spelled his name erroneously as McAshan.

I have been trying to find out what happened to this family after the 1850 US Census in Greene Co., AL, where he was listed as "Burr" McShan. In 1850, they had a daughter named Virginia. Apparently they moved before the 1860 census but can't find them on a census index. Do you have anything on them? I would greatly appreciate having this information. My main interest in this family is the Musgrove connection.

im trying to trace back my family as well and in documents or papers i had my great great grandpa was named john mcshan and on the wife all it had was a.spencer married in AL there daughter "Lizzie" or Elizabeth married Amaziah colvin in green county al in 1899 i think which they had my grandmother lula colvin if this is the same person i would really like to see what you have since that is as far back as any one in my family has gotten we cant find anything after john or A.spencer so please email me thank you

This photo belonged to my great grandmother's aunt who lived in Warren Co., MS.

Murder of Mrs. Jerry McShan 1922

I found the following article in the Wichita Daily Times dated 6-25-1922. Headline:Two More Arrested In Connection With Death of Woman, Houston, Texas, June 24. Story: "Two more arrests were made in connection with the death of Mrs. Jerry McShan, whose badly decomposed body was found at her home near Cleveland (Texas), Sunday afternoon. Todays arrest brings the total of men being held in the case to 3. J. H. Bloodsworth, 60, farmer, living near Cleveland, is being held in the Liberty County jail following testimony of the 3 year old child of Mrs. McShan who was an eye witness to the murder. The crime was one of the most revolting in the history of the state. After crushing the woman's skull and beating her almost beyond recognition the assailants fled leaving the woman's 3 year old and the other child (7 months old) lying on a bed beside the dead body of their mother. When found, the children's bodies were badly swollen from insect bites and they are in serious condition from lack of food."

Could this be the first wife of Jerry McShan...Annie Burkett? I just don't know. Does anyone out there know who this is?

My sources (which I have only in narrative form) say that William THOMAS (of Henry Co., AL) married Malissa McSHAN. One of their children was William E THOMAS, and another may have been John Whit THOMAS. W. E. married Mary A UTSEY (the child of Jacob Utsey), and they had a daughter named John Whit Thomas (my great-grandmother), who later married Ed REAL in Texas. After William's death (probably in the Civil War), Mary remarried Plotinus D GILBERT. Mary and P D had a couple of children, Mary August Gilbert and Arthur Lafayette Gilbert. After he died, she moved to Texas with her 3 children to be near her sister, Mahala UTSEY KIELS.

I have seen my grandfather's social security application, and his parents were, in fact, Edward REAL and John Whit THOMAS; they are buried in the Keechi Cemetery, Leon Co. TX. I also have some pretty irrefutable information that the UTSEY-THOMAS connection is true. I am, however, uncertain as to their parentage and their siblings - as well as to the McSHAN tie-in.

Do you have any additional information? Any corrections?

Thanks for the information. My father, Ellis Garland McShan is the youngest son of Sallie and James Leslie McShan. He moved to San Francisco when he married my mother, Nancy B. Cattich, in 1943, while he was in the navy. He had 4 children, James Ellis (born 1945), Barbara Lee McShan Demeter (1947), Judith Lynn McShan Favorito (1949) and myself, Diane McShan Hofsommer (1951). My father died in 1982 and is buried in Visalia, CA. I would love to have a photo of my grandmother, Sallie. I only remember meeting her once when she came to visit us in California, I was about 4 years old. My mother made a couple of visits to Texas during her marriage. My mother is still alive. I received alot of McShan family history (back to the late 1700s)from the McAshan side of the family.
