For Barbara Maske: I am a descendant of James D. Hayes and Lovina McVey, d. Linn Co. Iowa, 28 Sep 1903 (daughter of Peter McVey and Hannah Martin.) I have seen your genealogy on line and can add descendants of James and Lovina's daughter Elizabeth Hayes (my great grandmother whom I remember.) I am most interested in finding documentation for the tie between Peter McVay and his father(?) John McVay who is listed in the census' from 1790 through 1820 in Morris Twp, Washington County, Pennsylvania.

Also anything you might have on the ancestry of James D. Hayes (beyond what is in the Linn County History) would be appreciated. I have been to the Palo, Iowa cemetary and seen the tombstone of James and Lovina.

If you go to the Augusta County Virginia history you will find mention of three brothers - James McClure McVay,jr, John McVay, and George McVay. James McClure McVay,sr. and his wife were probably the immigrants who came into Pennsylvania and then moved to the Augusta County area whic part of it later became Rockingham County.

I am looking for information about John McVay, born in Rockingham Virginia in 1778. He married Elizabeth Miller and later moved to Pickaway County, Ohio. His father was Christian.

My great-grandfather was named Ira McVay. I don't have birth and death, but he was born probably in Indiana around 1860s, married Clara Smith, and had children Raymond A and Carrie in Fulton County, Indiana. I believe Ira's father was a physician, but I'm not sure if his name was James.

At present I am on extended vacation and coupled with the fact that it was over 30 years ago that I looked into my family information, I'm not real sure, I'll check when I get home next month. A long time ago I remember visiting an Aunt Myrtle in Texas. My grandfather lived and died in Grannis, Arkansas. He had two brothers Roy and another who was killed in a car accident. Sorry I can't remember - it's part of growing up I'm told.

There must be two Peter McVays in Ohio. Following is the info I have on Peter McVay. Listed in the Fayette County Census in Ohio in 1850. Listed in the 1860 and 1870 Census in Iowa. Buried in Iowa along with his wife Hannah. Pictures of both in a book about the McVays, etc.
Peter McVay, a native of Pennsylvania, was born in 1797. He emigrated to Ohio while young and lived in Fayette County. In February 1819 he married Hannah Martin. They had a large family, five boys and six girls, John 1819, Elizabeth 1821, Phoebe 1823, Cyrus 1825, Rosanna 1827, James 1829, Rebecca 1830, William 1832, Christina 1835, Harvey 1836 and Levina 1838. In 1852 he sold his beautiful home and with 8 of his chilren, 5 sons and 3 daughters, emigrated to Iowa. Three of the sons were married, John and Cyrus with 4 children each and James with one child. The covered wagons all lined up at Peter McVay's to start the long journey. Leonard Figgins, a man who had been to Iowa previously, drove the first wagon in the trains. Next came Cyrus and then James and the rest followed. All pitched tents at the close of the day, built campfires and cooked the meals. For four long weeks they traveled to their journey's end. They arrived on the banks of the Mississippi River, a few miles below Burlington where they had to wait for the steamboat to cary them up to the city. They arrived in Burlington after dark and found no place to erect their tents. Peter managed to get permission to make their beds in a tavern, by the river, on the barroom floor. The next morning some of the wagons parted for Knoxville where they had relatives. All of the others came to Palo, Iowa, where Peter purchased his home of 320 acres northwest of Palo, now knows as the Rankin farm. 1) Taken from an article written by Emily (McVay) Wright and read at a McVay Reunion.

I am also researching Amos McVay and various spellings thereof. The Amos I am looking for has wife named Deborah, last name either Cunningham or Nettleton. Their children are listed on the 1850 Census as James 21, Andrew J. 17, Hannah 14, Delila Ann 10, and Nathan F. 5. Delila married my great-great grandfather John Wesley Rector August 15, 1865 in Illinois, the second marriage for both. I have no information about their parent or exactly where they came from, different information on each Census I have. If you have anything on these please contact me. I would be very willing to share the information I have with you. Thanks in advance.
Do these names mean anything? William McVay, James, Robert, John Wesley--all born before 1825--I have heard they moved west when older. My 3x great grandfather--Christopher Columbus McVay (born 1812)--stayed in Ohio.

The name Luther is one I have seen in the family charts--I would have to do some research to find him but I think he was in Ohio abut 1850. The other names you mentioned do not ring a bell.

Somewhere we might be connected.

I know this an old posting and maybe the info is no longer current but I want to reply anyway. I too am looking for Mary Lydia McVay. Our family records have her last name as McVeigh, but I've seen it spelled both ways. We're stuck at the same dead end. This is hoping that you've perhaps come across something in the last 4 years since your posting that might be helpful. We decend through the VanZant line but have little on McVeigh. I found a census that lists their children, but I have been struggling to find her parents. We too list her birth as 1803 in Delaware or Pennsylvania. I've combed through various Delaware records to find any family names spelled either way. The search has turned up nothing. I'm shifting my focus at present to Pennsylvania. I am interested to know any info you might have as to William being her father's name. As you find anything, please contact me. I'll do the same.
Sincerely,
Curtis Creek

Joy, I most recently found your post on Aaron McVay family
and I am hoping to make a connection on Sarah Jane "Jennie"
McVay, daughter of James McVay born 1809 that you have
mentioned in this article. I see that you have listed her
as James daughter "Jennie Wills". Is there anymore info. that you would share with me regarding 'jennie'?
Here is what I have and why I am interested in this Sarah
Jane McVay. My great grandmother, Sarah Jane McVay/McVey,
born in Ohio, Jan. 29, 1857 according to her headstone, at
Strong City, Kansas. Married a William Jacob Ewing about 1880, where, I have not been able to find out. Kansas 1885 Census states that Sarah Jane came to Kansas from Nebraska. I have traced a Jesse R.McVay/McVey family from Nebraska back to Shelby Co., Ohio, which is the family you have researched and posted on this message board. Do you
know which Mr. Wills that this Jennie married? Perhaps
she was widowed and then married my great grandfather. Any
info. or suggestions would be so greatly appreciated.
Thanking you in advance, I remain hopeful.
