Mike: I don't visit the site much, but I know there were a lot of McCart children and some living in California near Denny McCart, one of my father's cousins.

Jacob Shank, brother of Nancy Jo Shank McVey, lived in Bakersfield, CA in the late 1940s as my father (his grand nephew) and I now have a copy of his Will. It lists all of Nancy Jo Shank's brothers and sisters if anyone is interested.

I have been researching the Knuckey family and think that your John Hill Knuckie may have been born John Howell Powell Knuckey in December quarter 1839 in Stithians, Cornwall, son of Hugh Knuckey & Mary Powell. He was living with his parents in Illogan, Cornwall in 1841, 1851 & 1861 but there is no trace of him in Cornwall after that.

Re: McVey from Georgia and Alabama

I research two separate McVeigh/McVey/McVay lines which passed through GA and AL and are not at all related (that I know so far).

The first is the lines of Lancaster McVay (1808-1891). He was b. in TN and died in AL. His father is thought to be John McVay (c1766-1841 MS) and the family is thought to have passed through SC and GA.

The second is James Lawrence McVeigh (b. c1819 d. 1897 GA--usually incorrectly listed as 1901 since that is the date on his tombstone). He came from the Isle of Man in the British Isles about 1836 to Savannah, GA. We are not sure where he was born, but probably Ireland. Some of his descendants ended up in AL.

Since you did not give a time frame or specific names, it is difficult to know if your family ties into one of these. The spellings have changed many times in all these families.

Teresa McVeigh
soheyrazar@comcast.net

If you tell us when your family was in Georgia/Alabama we might be able to help. I have A few lines of McVey's in my family, but non in this area. It doesn't mean that they aren't connected though. The lines I have are from Scotland (My great grandmother Jane)in abt 1881, and a John who married in. They both were/are in Kansas. I haven't done an extensive search on this line, but know that Jane's brother/s also came to the USA. If I find anything on them, I will let you know.

Gwen

I have tried to work with them via telephone but no results. you might try Tufts Digital Library, if you google, it will get you there. Distant Cousin is another site could try. Will

From what I have heard my gr great grandfather Anthony McVay from Armagh married Bridget McGuire. They came to Canada first and then to the U.S. They are buried in a cemetery in Faribault MN along with a son Anthony. I don't know for sure when they came here, I do know they had a few kids along the way. There is noone left to explain anything to me but there does seem to be some sort of connection here.
They did have a son Patrick who was born in Ireland before they came here. I don't even know where to look for their entry but someday I will find it. Thank you for this bit of information. It is the first I've had.

Jesse McVey born 1853 in Ill. married Mary Josephine Smith born 1854 in Kentucky They had children and moved to Kansas lived for years and some time in the early 1930's most moved to California, like a lot of people during the depression now here I am trying to find my cousins and their families.

Carl McVey

As you may know, any name starting with "Mc" means at some point they became 1/2 Scotch&Irish. Names starting with "Mac" are from Scotland. Information I have gathered so far indicates my family was part of a coal mining community in England during the 19th century and immigrated to Toronto, Canada. Lance McVey

I can't find the name of the book. The person I knew that had one, is decseesed now. She went through the whole thing and had all the documentation and had everything approved. This is the book I'm looking for. If you come accross the title, Please share.
There is a bunch of us due to my garndfather that also are part MAIDU indian.
That is the harder side to trace This is my goal.
We are scatted all accross the US, And mutipal's of the same name passed down. So years are very important.
Good luck in your serch

I also have census that say my ggggrandfather was born in South Carolina. I believe the census states his father as being born there as will, but haven't looked at those records in a while.
Here is the male linage I have:
James or John
John Lazarus
Charles Lee
Charles Daniel
my brothers
their son's
The McVey line is actually my grandmother's line, Jane being her mother.

let me know if you see a connection anywhere, as I have hit a brick wall on the Jackson line.

Gwen

Hi Lance, If, through the internet and go to google, type Scota and all the information you will need about the Princess will be there...Another site about the McVey name is...Glasgow Boards and the common Irish Surnames in Scotland, our name is there. Whilst tracing my Family, my GGGrandfather came from County Tyrone to Lanarkshire Scotland where he married my GGGrandmother Margaret Clark in 1842, they must have went back to Ireland because their first son, my GGrandfather Charles was born there and once again back to Lanarkshire where the rest of the family were born.My own Father William often told me the the McVeys fought for Bonnie Prince Charlie at Culodden 1746 and that we were Jacobites in them days most of the Irish and Highland Clans were followers of the Stuart cause... After the battle we went back to Co, Tyrone. Kind Regards Ian.

Hi, Surnames with the Mc or M', are short for the Gaelic Mac, the assumption that Mac is Scottish and Mc is Irish is a myth... As the Scots came from Ireland to their new home in Alba,The Gaelic name for Scotland ,they brought their language and Customs wth them ...It was when that the gaelic names Irish and Scots were written down in English the Mac was shortend to Mc or M. The ancient name for Ireland was Scotia from the Egyptian Princess of the same name...Hope this helps?. Ian.
