Hi Lynda,
Just found your posting. Perhaps you have all this by now.

Argentine C. Carpenter is in my family. He is my grandfather's brother. Shall try to get this all down, as I know it. Some of the info comes to me through other family, some I have documentation.

*Daniel Carpenterr b.1819-Ky married Caroline Orsborne(?) b.1820-Ky. in 1838 Missouri. They had six children(census): William b.1839 MO, *James Caliph b. 1842 MO, John b.1843 MO, Susan b.1846 MO, Henry b.1847 MO, Jane b. 1849 MO.

*James Caliph Carpenter married Pheba M. Compton b.1841 PA in 1861 location unknown. They had nine children(census, family knowledge): James b. 1862 Iowa, Susan b.1865 Iowa, Daniel b.1867 KS, John b.1869 MO, Eliza b. 1871 MO, Middleton b.1873 MO, **Argentine C. b.1876 MO, Baby boy b.1880 KS, *Thomas b.1883 ID.

I, too, have had trouble documenting **Argentine C. Seems he had some discomfort with his name, as I suspect he has used more than one alias(A., Archie, AC, etc). My conclusion is that his name is Argentine Confederate Carpenter, as he appears in the census of his father's household as Argentine and, his brother Thomas(my grandfather) named his son with the same first name. The rest of what I have comes from cousins in Idaho who have contacted me. **Argentine C. married Maggie McVicar b.1882 ID March 9, 1897 in Blaine, Id. They had seven children: Ruth b.1898 ID, m. Marion Smith, Elsie b.1899 ID, George, Ora, Hazel, Ted, Charley.

Hope this helps. I have other info coming down the line and will be happy to share it if you are interested.
Joan
I think we have a lot to share. I have a picture of "The Knoll" that John McVicar designated as the cemetery when he first arrived. I just found Jessie McVicar Blackburn's death notice. She died in March of 1895 in Spokane WA of consumpton. Andrew Blackburn, her husband then married Rebecca Purdy and they moved to Kootenai, Idaho. The family migrated there from British Columbia in 1892. After they left Chatham, Kent, Ontario, they went to Winnipeg then to British Columbia, then to Spokane. Please e-mail me at joycesharpley@comcast.net I have lots to share with you. I used to have the picture of John and Janet McVicar's gravestone, but have lost it somehow. I have stories sent to me about the first settlers in the area, parish records, and descendant information to share.

I am also descendent of McVicars and Duncans. There is a cemetery on a hill on the a Forsythe farm along the DARRELL Line up from Louisville. Duncan McVicar and elisabeth Duncan had a few children. George went to Man and was actually arrested by Louis Riel.
Duncan was a son of John McVicar and Jenet McTavish who came from Dunglass Argyleshire Scotland in 1835 with 10 children. These included some prominent people Donald and Malcolm McVicar.Malcolm was the first Chancellor of McMaster U.Then he moved to Potsdam NY and was heavily involved in education in the US.Donald became the moderator of the Presbyterian Church and lived in Montreal.
The other children included Duncan,Barbara,Hugh,John,Janet,Helen,Eliza.Eliza married a lawyer in Guelph ON named Donald Guthrie.Helen and mother lived with them(see 1891 Census)
One of Duncan's daughters married a Forsythe and they must have settled at the farm where the cemetery is. My ancester James Duncan married janet McVicar I believe. My grandmothers name was Catherine McVicar Duncan and her father was John Duncan and thet lived in Thamesville.

Have you tried FamilySearch.com ? This is the Latter Day Saints'(LDS) website. Go to http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/frameset_search.asp?P...

Then select: Region: British Isles, then Country:Scotland, then County.

They have microfilmed many parish registers, indexed in their International Genealogical Index (IGI).
However, the IGI also includes "data" submitted by LDS members. Ignore these as many are unreliable and all are undocumented. Choose the entries that say "Extracted birth or christening record for the locality listed in the record." There are hundreds of items; so choose County as above — if you know it.
I have a Christina, with daughter Sarah born in Fifeshire.
Contact me if you get stuck.

We believe John's father was Angus MacVicar also born Scotland--still working on dates.
Nannette

Actually Archibald McVicar was your GGG Grandfather. He was born in 1824 and married Eliza Tracy. One of his sons was James who was became a sea Capt. and eventually immigrated from New Brunswick to San Pedro, CA. He married Annie Edwards. One of there sons was Allan...born in 1891. Allan married Sigrid Wilhemina Swanson and they had 4 boys. Allan passed away at a young age (36 years old). His youngest son was George...who in 1945 married Lois Ann Davis of Dwight, IL. George moved to Dwight...and later (about 1958) He, Lois, and there boys relocated to Chester, Il. (where he and Lois lived the rest of there years). One of there 3 sons was named Richard...who married Brenda Gibbs and they had 3 children together. One of those children was a daughter named Lauren...and I believe that is you. Hope this helps.

All I know with regard to time frame was "their later years" as referenced in a history book regarding California (written by J.M. Guinn - published 1907). The book references a short biography on Capt. James A. McVicar...a sea Captain who finally settled in San Pedro. He was part owner in a business known as "McVicar and Brand" and built a house on 14th St. near Mesa. He married Annie Edwards in 1887 and at some later date (i'm pretty sure after the turn of the century) her parents moved in with them. The Edwards were from England. Mr, Edwards was a plasterer. That is pretty much all I've been able to learn about the Edwards family. Thanks for your interest and photos.

Well, duh. I guess if I had taken the time to study the dates on the headstones, I coulda had an estimate. The book I am thinking of was a collection of biographies that were compiled in 1927. Nice book, but there is NO table of contents, so you have to go through about 800 pages - not even alphabetical order - and look for the people. BUT, it's possible. If you do have any other biographical information, it might help me think of places to look. Anyway, here's the link to Mary's photo:

http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ca/losangeles/cemeteryphot...

With regard to the headstones bearing the names of Edwards and McVicar...Samuel Edwards and Mary Edwards were parents of Annie. Annie married James A. McVicar and they had 4 children. Samuel and Mary resided in the McVicar household in later years. One of the McVicar children (Allan) would eventually marry Mildred Swanson...and they would have a son named George. George was my father. I would appreciate any more information you might have on this subject...including the photograph you mentioned.

But I'll help you if I can. :-)

Hi, I am Diane nee Mcvicar, born to Robert John Mcvicar (born 1919 in Winnepeg Manitoba), and son of Leonard McVicar born in 189? his father was from Inverness Scotland. My father had two brothers, Leanord and Bill, born in the 1920's.

I am interested in how to get to Jim McKanes page or Ian McTaggarts page. Can you help (long shot since this is 5 years after your post!)

Thanks
