Dear Liz,

I've only waited 8+ years for a reply to my post -- many thanks! Unfortunately, I think you've misunderstood the Elizabeth whose parents eluded me back then. I was looking for Elizabeth McWHIRTER's parents. Since then, I have confirmed that they were, indeed, David McWHIRTER and Helen/Ellen/Nelly [Mc]CREDDIE.

This notwithstanding, I suppose we could be connected through the FAWCETTs, but I doubt it. I know that the Robert FAWCETT who married Mary McCULLOCH was Irish. I also know that he had a brother because his niece Mary E. FAWCETT was enumerated with him in 1870 and 1880. Starting in 1850, Robert FAWCETT was always a shoemaker in Detroit, but I have no reason to believe he was ever in Saginaw. Here's my reasoning. Mary McCULLOCH's older sister Margaret married an Irishman named Henry LEE in Saginaw in 1845. By 1850, the LEEs were in Detroit where Henry was a merchant (clarified in subsequent censuses as a shoe manufacturer and retailer). My guess is that Henry and Robert at least knew each other through their common trade and may have worked together. My further guess is that Mary McCULLOCH met Robert when she visited her sister in Detroit.

So there you have it. I've known about your FAWCETTs in Taymouth Twp. Cemetery since 2001, but I've never found a connection, and now you know that I still can't. I reviewed the Taymouth Twp. Cemetery FAWCETT grave images (http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~evansandob...) just in case. (Couldn't find details about Taymouth's Indian (Wheaton) Cemetery.) The graves in Taymouth Twp. Cemetery are just as you report except there are no McCULLOCHs there. Confirms my belief about Robert FAWCETT. His last siting was in 1880 Detroit. His wife Mary McCULLOCH died in Chicago in 1917. They had no surviving children.

If you ever find a connection between your family and Robert FAWCETT of Detroit, please get back in touch with me.

Mary Richardson
mrichson@ix.netcom.com

Have been able to trace that line back to Hugh McWhirter and all the way back to Alexander McWhirter in 1620. If you have any information that might be pertinent, I would love to see what you have and will share with you what I have. I'm in process of updating the McWhorter information as we speak. Who is your progenitor in your line? Henry McWhorter was from West Virginia.
Jesse Payton McWhorter was my great-grandfather. He married Mary Zuriah (Unknown). They had daughter, Amelia Virginia McWhorter who was born in 1858 in Louisville, KY. Amelia married Wright L. Collins who was born in 1846 in Tennessee. They had a son, Joseph Payton Collins, b. 1-20-1884 in Kentucky, d. 11-12-1959 in California. Joseph married Effie C. Walton who was born 7-23-1888 in Texas. She died 9-3-1974 in California. Joseph and Effie had several children, one of which was my father, James Paul Collins. I do have a picture of Jesse McWhorter, but it is of very poor quality. If you are still interested, I could try to duplicate the picture and "snail" mail it to you.

Thanks for replying. Lena died in 1971, one of her older sisters (Mae Yarbrough/Hughes/Houchin) was my grandmother. Do you know if any surviving children live in Bakersfield any more? If so, do you have any contact with them? I would surely like to share family information with them if they are interested and would like to recieve some information as well. How are you connected to William and Lena McWhorter if I may ask.
Connie

Karen,
The marriage date of 1855 fits with the birth of the Thompson boys (abt. 1858 and abt. 1861) and one of Laura's siblings (Elizabeth who married Madison Bolton) also was in Benton County, I believe. So that fits too. Leroy's family was definitely in Carroll County in 1850, in Heard County in 1860, (HH# 243, Franklin P.O.) and in Carroll County in 1870 (Carrollton P.O., HH# 1163). Of course, Carroll and Heard are adjacent to Randolph and Cleburne and Cleburne was once Benton too. Will continue this is private email although I don't think there is a word limit on the message boards. I've left some real doozies. :-)

Judy K

Karen,
I don't have much on Laura. She was born 30 Nov. 1827 probably in South Carolina since Leroy didn't appear in Georgia until the 1840s. She is named in Leroy's Bible records as a daughter (Source: Old Southern Bible Records by Memory Aldridge Lester). She appears in the 1850 Carroll County census with her parents and in the 1870 Heard County census with her second husband, James M. Stowers. Her first husband was William Thompson with whom she had at least two sons, William and Franklin Thompson. In 1870, there is a Leroy Stowers, age 4, who is probably her son with the second husband. My sources are (1) loose papers and family group sheets I received from my aunt, Ruby Faye McWhorter Barron, after she died. Faye did much research on this family back in the 1960s to very early 1980s, (2) Old Southern Bible Records (above) and census reports from Carroll and Heard counties in Georgia. As you can see, I haven't pursued Laura with a passion (and neither did Faye).

If you have more, I hope you will share it. I am related to this family through Laura's brother, Moses Allen McWhorter who married Sarah Kinney; his son, William Leroy McWhorter who married Eliza J. Wren; his son, John Allen McWhorter who married Sarah Jane Payne; and their daughter, who is my mother. Although William Leroy McWhorter moved from the Villa Rica area of Carroll County to Cullman County, AL with some of his younger children and died there, my branch (John Allen McWhorter) remained in the Carrollton-Atlanta area and eventually settled in East Point.

That is a really old message. I'm surprised it got a response. But glad it did. :-)

Judy Kilgore
Newnan, GA

McWhorter son, Confederate Army, Ninety-Six SC

I recently bought a quilt from a woman who said that she had gotten it in AL. She was told by an elderly lady that the quilt was specially made by a slave for a McWhorter son from Ninety-Six NC. This son survived the war and the quilt was put in a chest and kept. The only other thing the seller had heard was that this McWhorter boy had brothers that also served. There were a number of McWhorters in the CSA from SC, but I haven't found specifics that would identify this young man. Does anyone know of a McWhorter family in NinetySix SC (not the district, the town) who would have had sons of an age to go to the Civil War? Thanks for any information you can give.

I have been 2 years searching for the connection between our family and Laura (McWhorter) Stowers.
At familysearch.org website I found an A.W. Thompson & Laura McWhorter marriage record for 15 July 1855 in Calhoun Co., AL(which was old Benton Co., AL);which is the county Alexander W. was living in his mother Mary's household in 1850 Benton co., AL census.
The year of A.W.'s birth(b.abt. 1822) didn't exactly jive with Alexander W.s' but it said about so I wasn't too concerned about 5 years difference....
My story is rather long and I don't know how much I am allowed to write in these posts...My email is grannylu@karnesec.net
If you would email me I will continue with this...because I'd sure like to talk with you more on this.
Thank You,
K.Elaine Luce

Have you looked into the Hugh McWhorter family of York Co., South Carolina? They migrated over from Ireland in 1795 and he had a son named Andrew McWhorter... with a name like Hugh Andrew... could easily be a relative. Most of Hugh McWhorter's family made it to TX, but there was one son who stayed in N.C.

Let me know if you need any more information.
