This Thomas is part of my family. His paternal grandmother is the sister of my 2nd great-grandfather. I have seen your tree and wrote you about a connection to Benjamin Mead that is erroneous, but not sure you will see it. I can't find the family yet in 1911 Census Index. Did they emigrate? Also haven't been able to find the marriage of Thomas and Ellen.

I have found a marriage for a Nathan Mead in 1868 Ontario Canada.Nathan gave his age as 60 (1808).His parents were Israel and Fanny. My assumption is that Israel is the son of Richard and Parneal Sutton. Is this correct and if so does anyone know of this family?

oops. I descend from Henrys older brother Walter. Uriah Mead grew up in Maryland at the boundry between Anne Arundel and Calvet counties at Md. Route 2. He was the only one of his immediate family to move west and settled in Monroe Co. Ohio. I have not identified all of his children. His father was Samuel Mead 1731-1794 Samuels father was John Mead, and Johns father was Francis Mead b. abt. 1650. Uriah had brothers Benjamin, Samuel, Zachariah, and Walter Carr Mead; and sisters Mary Ann and Ara. He also had a half brother Horatio and a half sister Elizabeth. What else would you like to know?

I think William the son of Thomas lived in the Great Waltham / Good Easter area. That's where most of his immediate family lived. Though this family seems to have spread out all over Essex.

I just checked Charlie Mead's site and he has this William Mead married to Sarah PERRY in Great Waltham.

Are Latton and Layton variant spellings of the same place? There are a few wills of people born there at around the right time:

1754 Samuel Mead, Latton, potter, PCC
1769 Elizabeth Mead, Layton, widow, PCC
1769, Richard Mead, Layton, baker, PCC

You can buy copies of these at the PRO's Documents Online site.

I have more wills (and other info) on my web site:

http://koti.welho.com/lmead/page4.html

I don't know the geography of that part of Essex very well, but there seem to be quite a lot of wills of Meads in that general area. Quite a lot of PCC wills, which I suppose could be London merchants with a bit of land away from the city.

It's also worthwhile having a look at Charlie Mead's site, who posted here earlier. There are a few of us who are working in the same territory, also Andrew Mead who posted earlier, and Liz Holliday. She wrote a book about the Meads of Somerset and Essex, though I think I can say that Andrew and I contributed. A copy of her book is at record office at Chelmsford.
Regards,
Vance
You show that Thomas Mead (b. 1706) married Mary Gardiner in Harlow, Essex, and that they had a son William (b.1738/39). Do you have any further information on William? Do you know if he lived in the Harlow area, which is about 5 miles from Epping?

My ancestor was William Mead (b. circa 1772, from his age at burial in Epping, Essex), and he lived in Epping, and nearby Thornwood Common and North Weald Bassett. His parents may have been William and Elizabeth who were buried in Epping in 1813 and 1814, and from their ages at their burials, they would have been born about 1736.

These two Williams were not baptised in Epping, and from my research in the surrounding area of Epping I found William Mead and Elizabeth Freshwater married in Latton (which is now part of Harlow) in 1762. They were both of Latton. I found no baptisms of a William Mead or Elizabeth Freshwater in Latton 20 or 30 years prior to that date, and in fact saw no other Freshwaters. There were Freshwaters in Epping.

I am looking for a connection between William (b 1738/39) son of Thomas Mead, and William (b about 1736) husband of Elizabeth Freshwater.

Charlie,
It's good to meet another worker in the Mead vineyard.

I have a new website. The other one - the one linked on your site - is still online and valid, but I haven't updated it for a while. The new one is at:

http://koti.welho.com/lmead/page4.html

This is the one that I'm keeping up to date. For example, I have a couple of dozen more transcriptions of late-17th century wills from Essex. I don't suppose these will affect your work, but they might be useful.
Vance Mead
Hi Al!
Yes, please! I would love to know more. I've really only been able to identify Henry Mead and his father Uriah from various sources. Washington County Ohio Historical records sent me a Mead family timeline that never mentioned Uriah. Any additional information would be greatly appreciated.

Uriah's GG Grandson added the "e" at the end of Mead(e) sometime around the Civil War although we're not sure if he did it in solidarity with General George or if he simply liked the way it looked.

~Lisa

Hi, I am his wife #2. We've been divorced since 1986 or so, but I still know his whereabouts because we have a daughter together. Helen is long gone. Ray lives in Missouri now with wife #6 (providing they are still together). He is in the area around Springfield MO. I can get a message to him through our daughter if you are interested, but I don't have his exact address. I trust you are a family member and not a bill collector!

NancyK523@yahoo.com

I'm looking for evidence that Hezekiah's son, Peter Mead, was the father of John Mead (1791-1870) who married Anna Tenbrook/Ten Broeck. John and Anna lived in Fairfield, Lenawee Co, Michigan by 1850, and John was still listed there on the 1860 census.

Vance,
I've also looked at all the census records you mentioned, and I do think the John Mead in the Tioga census records is Joyce's ancestor. Her message about the Ten Broeck connection got me interested because I'm a Ten Broeck descendant too - but not in my connection to the Meads.

I don't think John Mead, b. 1791 is the son of Hezekiah Sr. because he was born in 1748 and I've never found a John as his son. His son Hezekiah was born 1780 so he's too young to be John's father. Could you tell me what evidence makes you eliminate Peter Mead, born before 1765,as the father of John Mead?
Mary Lou

Vance,
Do you know the names of Peter Mead's children? The census records for 1800 - 1820 shows he had children in his household even though he didn't name them in his will. Peter lived next door to John Ten Broeck/Tenbrook in Elmira, NY for several decades so I wonder if their children married.
Mary Lou

Right - so the John Mead listed in Elmira on the 1820 census is not Hezekiah's son John, but a different John Mead, born 1791.

You mention documentation and I assume you mean the will abstract for Hezekiah Mead, which just shows he had a son named John. Do you have a birth date for Hezekiah's son?

Vance,
On the 1820 census, note that John Mead and Peter Mead are on the same page while Hezekiah Mead is on a different page. That's one reason why I think John Mead, born 1791, is the son of Peter Mead.

Hezekiah Mead, Jr. born about 1780 had 3 sons that are documented: Judah, Ira, and John. Judah was born about 1804, according to the 1850 census. If we assume the sons of Hezekiah are listed in birth order, that makes John born about 1808 or later. Thus, he cannot be the John Mead, born 1791 who married Anna Tenbrook/Ten Broeck.
Mary Lou

William Mead marriage in Epping, Essex, England in 1795

The furthest back I can trace my Mead ancestors is to William Mead who married Elizabeth Aley in Epping, Essex, England on Jun 4 1795. A probable brother for William was James Mead, who married Sarah Tunnidge in Epping on Nov 2 1797. Neither William nor James was baptized in Epping.

Banns were read for Elizabeth Mead and William Dorrington (both of Epping) in 1793, and she could be a sister to William and James.

William Mead was buried in Epping in 1842, aged 70. Thus his birthdate was about 1772.

In 1841 and 1851, in nearby Nazeing, William Henry Mead, the grandson of William Mead, was living with John Mead, the son of James and Sarah, and was described as cousin to John.

I am looking for the parents of William and James. They may have been Elizabeth and William Mead, wife and husband, who were buried in Epping in 1813 and 1814, aged 76 and 78. This would put their birth years at about 1737.

I would like to find anyone who is researching Meads in the county of Essex in England.

Mary Lou
I would start with the more reliable sources, the wills and census data, and I’m always skeptical about things on Family Search, especially when they say “No source information is available”.

Hezekiah Jr. had a son named John, as is shown in his will in 1834. This was in Big Flats, about 5 miles from Elmira. John and Judah must have lived nearby, since they had responsibilities as executors, such as paying debts and legacies, and going to the courthouse to have the will proved. They also had to be at least 21 years old. There weren’t very many Judah Meads. He must be the one living in Tioga Co. in 1830 and in Chemung Co. in 1840 (Chemung and Tioga were split into two counties in 1836), and living in Illinois in 1850. He was born in 1804.

There is only one John Mead in Tioga Co. in the 1820 and 1830 census, and this must be the son of Hezekiah. In the 1850 census, when John Mead was living in Lenawee, Michigan, at least two of his children, Garrett Mead, born 1830, and Lewis Mead, born 1834, were born in New York.

If you assume that Peter Mead had a son named John, where is he? Peter and Hezekiah are in Tioga Co. in the 1820 census, but there’s only one John Mead there. There’s direct evidence that Hezekiah Jr. had a son named John, but no evidence that Peter did. Peter might have had a son named John who no longer lived in Tioga Co. in the 1820s and for some reason was not mentioned in his father’s will, but that is to assume facts not in evidence.

About the date of Hezekiah Jr.’s birth. On Family Search it says “about 1780”. Some people say exactly 1780 or some other date. These aren’t exact or perfectly reliable. No source is given. “About 1780” could mean any time from 1770 to 1790.
Vance
If John Mead was born in 1808, he couldn't be in the 1820 census. This was for Heads of Households only, and he wouldn't be a head of household at the age of 12.

John and Peter are on the same page? So? How many pages were there? Big Flats was a small place. John had his own household in 1820. Peter was his uncle.

You are going about this backwards. You said at the beginning that you want to prove that John is the son of Peter. Now you are making all these assumptions in order to prove what you want to believe. The question to start with is, "Who is John's father?" Is there someone in Tioga Co. NY who is documented to be the father of John Mead? I've given you the answer to that several times.
I don't suppose we're related. My Meads came from Watford in the 16th and 17th centuries. I have done some research on Meads in Essex, though it's mainly 1500-1700.

On my web site:

http://koti.welho.com/lmead/page4.html

I have quite a lot of information on Meads in Essex, mainly around Saffron Walden in the 16th century. For the 18th century one thing outside of BMD is wills. Quite a lot of butchers and bakers left them. There are a few Mead wills for that area, depending on how wide you cast your net: Ongar, Great Waltham, Hatfield Broad Oak.
I think I can take you back a couple of generations before Robert Mead, born in 1769 and apprenticed in 1782. The first three items are from SEAX, concening the transfer of a customary holding. The genealogy was sent to me years ago, by Liz Halliday, if I remember correctly. Robert's parents were Edward Mead (b. 1734) and Elizabeth Sorrell, and Edward's parents were Thomas Mead (b. 1706) and Mary Gardiner.

June 1785.
Manor of Newarks in Good Easter.

Admission of Elizabeth Mead (wife of EDWARD MEAD) on death of her father Robt.
Have you been in touch with Andrew Mead? He has done some research on this family that takes it from Thomas Mead (1706) back to the 14th century. For the period 1450-1650 he mainly used the wills on my site. (After 1650 there were too many Johns and Thomases for me to sort out.) His work is on Rootsweb World Connect.
Mary Lou
Sorry I only know about Robert who is mentioned above.

However, in the 1820 census, there is just one John Mead, along with Peter Mead, Hezekiah Mead, and others, in Tioga Co.

In the 1830 census there's also just one John Mead, together with Hezekiah Mead and presumably his son Judah Mead. There is no Ira Mead, unless Ira is Uriah or Israel.

In the 1840 census, Judah Mead is in Chemung Co.

In the 1850 census, Judah Mead is possibly the one born in NY in 1804, now living in Kendall Co, Illinois.

So I'm thinking that since there's just one John Mead in 1830, he must be the same person as the John Mead in Hezekiah's will in 1834.

Have you been in touch with Joyce Reger at Mead Researchers? She's descended from John Mead born 1791. She says that in the 1830 census info in Elmira NY, it shows John Mead (30-40 yrs), which would put him in the right age group. Since there's only one John Mead there in 1830, I'd say it must be the son of Hezekiah.

Vance
I have quite a lot of information about Meads in Essex here:

http://koti.welho.com/lmead/page4.html

Mainly wills, though not much after 1700. Also check the wills in Hertfordshire, which was just a few miles away. Also Consistory Court and Commissary Court of London. At that time the Diocese of London covered Essex and part of Hertfordshire.
These are will abstracts for Tioga/Chemung counties NY. It doesn't look like Peter Mead had a son named John. However, Hezekiah did.
