John Meagher - Nova Scotia

I'm looking for information on the parents and relatives to John Meagher (1809-1867) who was born Mount Thom, Pictou, Nova Scotia, Canada and who married Phebe Ann Mabee about 1838 in Colchester county.

On his death registry it states John's father was Thomas Meagher, a Butcher who would have been born in the mid to late 1700s. I suspect Thomas was originally from Tipperary and it appears John may have had relatives living in Halifax in the 1860s and 70s.

Any help would be appreciated.

My family is also Meagher's and has two plots at Holy Cross Cemetery in Brooklyn. One of them has my grand parents and great grand parents plus quite a few other Meagher relatives. The other one has both Meagher's and McCabe's. My Meagher's are also from Tipperary and settled in Brooklyn although I don't think they are the same Meagher's as the names in your previous post are not familiar. You can email me at petekev65@aol.com if you want as I do not come on this board often.

Catherine my mother was Frances O'Meagher she had a brother Ron who was in the airforce during WWll. He had I thought one son Keith and one daughter (?), Keith was killed in a tractor accident(?)I don't know when. The daughter is a bank manager. My mother and Uncle Ron had two sisters Auntie Margaret and I don't know the others name as she was adopted by a maiden aunt. Both became nuns in the mercy order and can be traced thru' their records. They were all born in FernTree Gully now (?) as their Father Lloyd had an orchard of 500 acres. I don't know if this is related to you or not but the name Frances seems to be a family name and I believe they originally came from Waterford and one brother was sent to Tasmania of which I have info if you think this is relative to you.

My great Grand Uncle, Michael Cavanagh, wrote "Memoirs of General Thomas Francis Meagher." It was first published in 1892 by the Messenger Press in Worchester, MA. The first chapters tell in detail about his family in Ireland. The book tells of his marriage to Miss Bennett and her death in childbirth. His second marriage to Elizabeth Townsend took place in NY in the Spring of 1856.

Ellen Curtin married William Delee and they lived in Glenmore. Jeremiah Curtin married a Dore woman, they lived in Templeglantine but had a farm in Ballyquirk. Jeremiah's wife died in childbirth and he died shortly after. Their two youngest children were Patrick and Mary. Patrick went to live with his uncle Con Curtin in Monagea and Mary was sent to live with the Delees in Glenmore. I don't know what happened the older children. Is this the same crowd?

I agree with you. I didn't feel they were the same Honora, only that if you didn't know where your Honora was from in Ireland, you might look to the Cragg, Mt. Collins area for your Honora's Hartnetts. My Honora was married to J. Curtin in Monagea, which is a parish or two over from Mt. Collins, in Co. Limerick. Her godfather was John Hartnett.
Alice

Jack,
I have a Honora Hartnett in my family. She was from Cragg, Mt. Collins, Co. Limerick. She married Jeremiah Curtain in 1787. She had 6 children with Jeremiah, and died before 1833. Don't think we're related but you might try searching records of where my Hartnetts originated as more may be found. Maybe cyndislist.com, and look for Catholic parish around Cragg, Mt. Collins.
Alice T.

My greatgrandmother was the daughter of James C. Keating and Emma Meagher. James C. Keating was born 3-7-1864 in Walkerton, Ontario, and Emma Meagher was born 7-6-1869 in Grove, Minnesota. Her parents were Michael and Honora (Hartnett) Meagher. They were both born in 1843 in Ireland. Michael Meagher was a private in Co. D. of the 1st Minn. Volunteer Cavalry Regiment Mounted Rangers. He enlisted on October 16, 1862, and was discharged on November 4, 1863. He married Honora between 1863 and 1868, and they had eight or nine children. Michael Meagher received a disability pension. He and Honora died after 1893.
That is all I know about Michael and Honora Meagher.
Can anyone help with dates and parents?
-Jack

I have two questions, and a couple answers.

First off, does anyone know who Michael and Honora Meagher's parents are, and 2) when did they die?

For the answers I have, the only thing I know about where they came from in Ireland in Northern Ireland. I was looking at a census of the James C Keating family, and Emma Keating's (Meagher) parents were listed as born in Northern Ireland. That's all I know about that.

As for the next answer, after 1880, they lived in Birchdale, in Todd County, Minnesota, with eight (8) children:
John, Emma, William, James, Denis, Margaret, Michael, and Maurice. They had another son Thomas born before Denis who might be going by James (middle name?).
The last record I've found of Michael and Honora Meagher is Michael Meagher's pension card. It is dated May 18, 1893, so after 1893, he and Honora died. That's all I know about that.

I think that Honora's parents may be Maurice and Margaret Hartnett, but I'm not sure.

If anyone can answer these questions, or use the answers, that would be great.
-Jack

THANK YOU for replying! I just hope you get this message. I read the postem on Margaret Patton Meagher, and saw that Honora's maiden name was Hartnett. I was was excited! I've been searching for her maiden name since November 2005. Honora is my ggg-grandmother, and I've been doing my grandma's family tree because grandma's mom died when she was 1 1/2. Her name was Estella Keating.
You listed Honora's maiden name as Horrocks. Is it Horrocks or Hartnett? I've thought it was something else. I've thought it was Graham, Patton, and Valery.
I hope you get this message!
-Jack

Thank you for replying so fast.
So, Honora's maiden name was Hartnett? Just to verify it one last time.
I've discovered a little tidbit about her husband Michael Meagher. He served in the Civil War. I have his enlistment information and the battles was in, and his regiment, but I have no picture of him. DO you have a picture of Michael and/or Honora Meagher?
Well, I'm pretty glad that the whole 2 1/2 year search for Honora's maiden name is finally over. I've gone searching for her under many different maiden names - all of which were wrong.
Do you have any information on when Michael and Honora Meagher died? What about their parents? Do you know anything about their daughter,my greatgreatgrandma Emma Meagher Keating? I've been looking for her date of marriage to James C. Keating.
Once again, thank you fo replying SO quickly, and if you can answer any of the above questions, I would be very happy.

Thanks!
-Jack
Delia ), Mary, Ellen, Sarah, and Ann Connors. Family tradition states that they immigrated two at a time. Bridget ( Delia ) Connors married Patrick Farrell, son of Thomas and Kate Farrell of County Limerick, Maine, in 1895 in Lowell, MA. Any information concerning Bridget ( Meagher ) Connors and her origins in Ireland would be very much appreciated.
Jean Mayo

According to my Aunt Kay's family tree(handwritten) Honora's last name was Hartnett. She was my Great-Grandmother, my Grandmother was Margaret Meagher. She married a Patton, who died, left her with a son, Walter, she later married my Grandfather, John Patrick Keating(known as Jack. Unfortunately, all Kay put was that they were from Ireland but no DOB, and she is now 94, and has dementia. So I am at a dead-end.

The Meaghers had land close to a mountain called "The Devil's Bit" in the Barony of Ikerrin.

There were a lot of us back then. Sorting things out in 1822 is tough. We are as far back as 1811 in the townland of Ballybristy, but the name had changed by then.
