Hi
I can tell you that Theophilus is my husband's uncle's father. Theophilus married Ann Butters 7 July 1920, Guisborough records. As far as I know they had just the one son who is still living. The Mealing name in this branch of the family continues with Theophilus' grandsons and great-grandsons.
Cheers Sandy

Is mrmann@live.com your email address? I have a spreadsheet of census records I have collated that I can email to you if you would like.

I think you may have made a mistake in the previous post RG12 is the 1891 census.

Going back in the census records there are some discrepancies with Ann's name as follows:

1881 Her name is recorded as Ann at 147 Grove Hill, Lofthouse with Henry, Ada J, Elizabeth, Maud M, Ernest M and Silvester.
RG 11 Piece: 4838; Folio: 25; Page: 42;

1891 recorded as Hannah at 13 Albion Tce, Warrenby with Henry, Elizabeth, Maud, Ernest, Silvester, Theodore, Cyril, Theophilus, Mabel, and Percy
RG 12 Piece: 4001; Folio 78; Page 38;

1901 recorded as Anna Crow at 13 Tod Point Road, Coatham, Redcar, with Frank (2nd husband), Maud, Ernest, Sylvester, Theodore, Cyril, Theophilus, Mabel and Percy.
RG 13 Piece: 4570; Folio: 131; Page: 41.

1911 recorded as Anna Crow at 6 Westbourn Grove, Coatham, Redcar, with Frank, Theophilus and Mabel.

Henry and Hannah actually had 11 children, although I have found no records so far of Adolph. My Grandma was adamant that he did exist and he is mentioned (living) in a letter that she had kept from Mabel to Silvester that was dated 14 Jan 1958.

Theophilus is also a mystery as most of my Grandma's generation had never heard of him, I found him when the 1901 census came online. My Grandma was shocked as she was always led to believe that her dad had come from a family of 10. I suspect that the answer may be long gone, but you never know.

Can anyone help?

I have been unable to locate my GG Grandfather on the 1861 census. I have found his mother Elizabeth (widow, 40) and his brothers James (14), Edward (12), Charles (8) and Moses (4) who were all together but not Henry.

This is puzzling as I have found him on the 1851 (in Ipswich, Suffolk) and 1871, 81, 91 and 1901 census', He would have been about 10 in 1861.

If you're still out there 7 years later, we are researching the same family, place and time. I've typed up a draft family tree for the HW Mealings from 1762 to early 20th century and will be happy to post it to you. My ancestor is John Mealing 1828-1900, I think he was son of another John born in Penn 1786 and in turn he was son of another John married at Penn in 1773. It's been v hard to research before 1837 so any early information would be especially gratefully appreciated!

I have confirmed alot of my records for here, but not for the England connection.

I've been in touch with your cousin, Christine, regarding our Mealings. Also sent a reply to Marie on her William Chadborn Mealing.

Still looking to see a connection. Alot of the same names show up here in the New York Mealings.

Can't say for sure until I can get up to the Ossining, NY area and check out records there.

Our William C. Mealing was naturalized to the US in September 1855.

Any thoughts?

Leo

Hello Marie,

I have a William C. Mealing b. about 1810 and emmigrated to the US between 1847-1849.

He had several children, one of the oldest being Thomas C. Mealing b. June 1834. Thomas also came to the US around the same time. He had a son, named Thomas Chadborn Mealing Jr. (confimred from other records) born June 3, 1883.

He married Mary (unknown),
They also had these other children born in England:

Clara Selina Mealing b. around March 1839
Eliza Mealing, b. September 1835
Hubert W. Mealing, b. April 1844
Elizabeth Mealing b. 1842
James H. Mealing b.1846

and

Mary J. Mealing b. 1850 in New York

I don't know what the C. stands for in our William, but presume that the C. in Thomas Sr. is Chadborn as his son.

I found a record that I think links our Clara Selina to the Gloucester County area.

My wife is descended from Clara Mealing.

Any thoughts?

Leo Cunningham

Hello Joy,

Sorry I haven't written back in so long. I hope your e-mail address is still active. Anyway, I think I have a connection. The William C. Mealing I was looking for was born around 1810 and lived in Gloucester County, England. He did marry a Mary but I don't have her maiden name. They did have a son, and several other children in England. Their son was James H. Mealing and he was born around 1846. They also had a daughter, Clara Selina Mealing who was born in 1839. That is my wife's great grandmother. I have more information on James and his descendants in the US.

Hi there, just found your Mealin responses on the internet and have some questions for you. Actually John Mealin is my brother in Toronto, but the Joy you were responding to earlier wasnt me!!! John says to say Hi to you and to let you know that we (me really!) are trying to verify William Chadborn Mealin (also that we do have 2 Charles Mealin's in our family).

I have just received the birth/baptism certificates from England for my father (Harry Mealin) and the next 3-4 generations before ...and along the line seems to be some confusion. Note - I have just received from the UK Records office the originals of all the birth/marriage certificates.

(1) Harry V.A. Mealin born May 11, 1915 (married Cicely V. Baldwin)
(2) Harry's father is Joseph A. Mealin born May 10, 1892 (married Adelaide D'Castro)
(3) Joseph's father Henry James Mealin born Oct 7, 1864 (married Sidonia Garner)

Now this is where it gets confusing, because on Henry James birth certificate, his father's name is shown as 'Joseph Mealin' not 'James Henry'.

The info. I have on (3) Henry James father, who is Joseph, isthat he was born in 'unknown' Yorkshire, England (no date of birth). This Joseph had 2 sons: Henry James, Charles Isaac and 1 daughter Josephine b 1875 (married George Veysey).

I'm still trying to connect your William Chadborn Mealing b. 5/1/1846, Sweet Brier St. Kings Holm, St. Mary, Gloucester) married Mary Williams, children: James Henry.

Because of a claim my dad (Harry) submitted I need to prove the British connection. So would apprciate if you could forward me the descendents info. you have on William Chadborn. My cousin in England did a very detailed research with all the source details she found. Let me know if you want a copy.

So now are you thoroughly confused as I am!

Cheers,

Joy

William Penn, founder of Penn State lived three miles up the road from Wycombe in the village of Penn, he sent people out to the Americas to populate his new venture.

Leo,

No sisters or other siblings for James H Mealing. But James H had 2 sons, Henry James Mealin and Charles (this we believe is where the 'g' was dropped.

Henry james born 7 Oct 1864, d 12 Oct 1914, (Moulmein, Burma) married Sidonie Garnier (b abt 1864, d 16 Aug 1909, Moulmein). Children: Joseph Archibald Mealin (b 10 May 1892, Burma, died in England 1974). Siblings: sisters: Hilda, Gladys, Edith. brothers: Edward Charles & Mortimer.

Joseph A. married Adelaide Philomene D'Castro (b 22 Apr 1896, Moulmein, d England 1974) on 9 Aug 1913, St.John's R.C.Church, Rangoon, Burma. Children: Marjorie (Bubbles),
James, Harry A, Kevin, Zena, Malcolm, Audrey (all born in Burma).

Hopefully this might help your research. But we're finding quite a few Mealin's and Mealings worldwide now. So I dont know where and if there is any connection here. Have located quite a few Mealin's in Montreal, Que.,Canada, Australia and England, of course.

Keep in touch if you find any further info.

Cheers,

J

Joy,

You have a very interesting bit of info and it ties in somewhat with what I have. All I have for James H. Mealing is that he was born in England in 1846 (from census records). William C. did marry a Mary (unknown last name). Both were born in England. They had two sons tho. The other son was Eubert who was born in 1843. Do you have any sisters for your James?? The Mealings I have settled in Ossining (SingSing), NY. William was a guard at the prison. He was naturalized in 1855.

Quite a few Mealings in that area.

I haven't been able to get up there to look at local records. I also lost track of James. It could be that if he dropped the 'g' that I missed him in other searches.

I will get back to you soon. Been real busy at work and will do this as soon as I can get some time off - which I hope will be soon.

You can e-mail me at 'flags744@aol.com'

Would like to get any other info you may have and share what I have.

Thanks for replying

Just a side note. Joy is also my sister's name. Don't see it too often.

Leo Cunningham

Joyce,

Thanks for the reply. It's possible, but I can not say as yet. The records I have for William Mealing right now are from the 1860 census. They show him at 50 years old (so 1808 is possible) They lived in SingSing (Ossning) NY. Clara Mealing Spivey's death certificate shows that her and her parents were all born in England. Clara was born in 1841. She's listed as 20 years old in the 1860 census, which would be off by one year from her actual birthdate. From what I understand it was not uncommon to round off the ages...depended on the census taker.

Do you have any other info on Ann Mealing's family..when / if they came to the US, and where they settled.

My e-mail address is flags744@aol.com

Thank you for your info.
