I am positive Joseph Mecca was from Hungary. I have copies of his naturalization papers and immigration records are on
ellis island site. All other Mecca's as you know are from Italy. Our name started out as Mica, pronounced as "meeka". It was spelled several ways by Joseph till it finally stopped with Mecca.

This is Mike Mecca in California. My Dad and Debbie's Dad were first cousins. Our branch settled in Beloit WI.
I moved out to California along with my brothers and sister in 1979. Debbie and I have met once on one of my trips to dallas.

Thanks. That would be nice. I was wondering if Mecca is a shortened form of another name or not. My grandfather was Charles Mecca and he was born there in 1897 in Aviglano, I believe. I've heard that Mecca could come from 'Domenica' but wasn't sure.

This is Wendy, Debbie's cousin. Our father's were brothers. The Meccas that we descended from aren't Italian. Our line is the only line that I know of that is not. We are from Hungary. Our name was changed, as so many others, at Ellis Island.

My husbands family has the last name of Mecca and they come from Italy. We have been to visit his family several times and are going back again in September. His family has Mecca_Aleina, Mecca Giovan Maria and just Mecca. I will ask them if they know where the name comes from. I do know that the attached name is there way of making not to marry to closely in the small villages. Our family is from the Torino area.

My surname was Mecca before I got married. My father just tried a DNA test at Family Tree DNA but there was no match. His father comes from Italy and was named Charles Mecca. We are trying to figure out where the name Mecca originates and I've heard all sorts of things; that it comes from Domenica, Domenico, Meccariello. Do you know? I wonder if we are related. Thanks. My Donato Mecca was my great-grandfather. He was born in
Ruoti(I had the spelling wrong before).

I guess the family name was really "Pasante" or "Pasanti".
Mecca was the name of the people who adopted him.

His father had some kind of title-duke or baron or something. They had a "palazzo" which is now a police station. I saw it 30 years ago when I went to Italy. They had gypsies living in their basement, or lower level. I think they wanted to give them a place to live, and maybe they did some work for them?

His father couldn't have children with his wife,
so he had 3 mistresses and he bore a child with each one.

My great great grandparents were Angelo and Margaret. Her maiden name was Mecca. They ended up having 21 children, all of only which 18 survived. The names you mentioned in your query are names that I've never heard before. I do not know exactly from what region they came from in Italy but I do know that they both immigrated here back in the early 1890's. Obviously having that many children produces a huge family tree so it may be a little bit more difficult.

My great grandfather was from Lanzo Italy. His name was Lorenzo Leo Cabodi. He was the youngest of five brothers and left Italy when he was young after some family dispute. Can you assist me in finding the rest of his family? I know he left in the late 1800.

My great-grandfather, Donato Mecca was from Routi, Potenza and
lived in Dunmore, PA before moving to Rome, NY.

His wife was Maria Romano and she was from Avigliano, Potenza.
They had 7 children. Salvatore was my grandfather and he was born in Dunmore, PA.

My husband's father is from Basilicata region. Met Antonio Mecca on the Princess "Sun" few years back and he was from Naples. Also did not know how the name came to be. Obviously there are a few "Meccas" out there. Best I have heard about the name is that it is from the Islamic invasion of Italy many years ago??

Positive he was born in Hungary. So far as I know, his descendents are the ONLY Hungarian Mecca's in the United States. Our name was originally Mica. Joseph settled in Clearfield, Pennsylvania after living in New York for a short time and then Woodland, Pennsylvania.

I recently started do my Santarsiero family tree. I found out that my family came from Avigliano in the early 1900's and part of the family branched off to Waterbury, CN and Dunmore, PA. I don't have much info on the family that went to Waterbury,CN. But, I do know that Guieseppi and Caterina Santarsiero had a son Domenic.

My husband's stepfather was named Michael Aloysious Mecca. My husband's mother was Gloria Nadell Mecca. He was born in New York City on October 22, 1907. His parents were Vito Mecca and Emilia Liborti. I know this much because I just received a copy of his social security application.

I know that he lived in New York (Queens), in New Jersey, and in Arizona. He worked from General Motors.

I know that he was married previously, and had two sons, who lived, I believe, in the Boston area.

I would be interested in learning anything that anyone else might know about him. Thank you!

My husbands Father, Dominick,, son of Vitale Mecca& Carmela Bultiere.....Dominick grew up in Bayonne, NJ.....Carmela was 2nd. wife, first wife, name unknown. The only info we have is that Vitale was possibly from Anzio, Italy. Dominick had 13 brothers and sisters.

I was about to sign off for the night when I saw you mail and after reading it, it was amazing. So many connections, as you say, there has to be a connection. This is actuaaly my husband, Dominick's family. There was a brother Michael who to our knowledge, never married though but everything else is exact. How many families have this background. there where 13 children in all, I have most of the names, knew alot of them. In fact, we have a picture of Vitale, a very large man.

Cedar Falls--Word has been received here of the death at Barstow, Cal., Saturday night of Mrs. Paul MECCA, en route home from Albuquerque, N.M., where she had been living for the last three years for her health. Death was due to a heart attack.

Her husband, who has been making his home with a daughter, Mrs. August PACE, 706 West First street, is at the University hospital, Iowa City, where he is a patient.

Born in Italy, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter NUCCIO, she was married in New York to Paul MECCA. They came to Cedar Falls 15 years ago.

Four children survive[:] Mrs. PACE, Josephine MECCA, of Albuquerque; Alfred M., 803 West 18th street, and Joseph of Madison, Wis. There are two grandchildren.

The body will reach the Brown funeral home by Thursday. Funeral arrangements will be made later.

I have been able to find many of our family in Italy and have the church records of the Mecca Aleina and Mecca Ferroglia at the genealogy library in Salt Lake City, Utah. I do need some help with the family and how they tie together. I need to know how much this would cost me and if you know more than I do or if you are able to go back farther than me. Please email me and give me this information. We visit our family in Italy at least every 2 years. I think that I have seen the name of Cabodi in some of my records. Are you related?

Hello, Ran across this posting. Thought it was interesting. My grandfathers name was Martin Mecca of PA born around 1916. We think his dads name was Joseph. We do know he died when my grandfather was 2 years old. My dad was born in St. marys PA. Then the family moved to Beloit Wisconsin.

You have cousins in Johnsonburg, St Marys, Ridgway, Lancaster, Columbus, Ephrata, Lititz, and Clearfield, just to name a few places. There's also one in Rochester, New York (she has a sister in California). I'm sure that there are more (lots) whom I have never met. Sorry to say that a couple probably might not be interested, but most would be happy to meet you. Do you ever make it to Texas??????
