I believe you have the wrong father listed for John Leslie Medlin. His father shows to be William Franklin Medlin born 1883 in Weatherford Parker Texas, Harriet Elizabeth Barnes 1862 same birthplace and John Leslie same birthplace. This is from familysearch.org. It also shows John married to Adah Ethel Jones about 1920. Rosa would not be a sister as William J. Medlin was born in Tennessee, Harriet in Texas and Rosa in Arkansas. William J. Medlin lived to be 103 years of age. It does show a female child born to William F. and Harriet.

Name change

My great-grandfather's real name was Jason Medlin. He was born in Greenville County, SC about 1850 and was the son of Robert and Elizabeth Medlin. He married, about 1869, Emily Grisham, a daughter of James Jacob and Caroline Grisham. About 1892 Jason changed his name and moved his family to Mecklenburg County, NC. His new surname was Williams, and his children and further descendants have used the name Williams to this day. The name Jason used as a given name is not known for sure, but there is evidence that it may have been James and that he may have used the middle initial "B." Some of Jason and Emily's children's names were George, Robert Mariet, Victoria, Octivia, and Mary Alice. It is belived that one son stayed in Greenville County and kept his original name, believed to be James Riley Medlin. I would like to find out what became of GGF Jason Medlin, alias James Williams. Also, I'm posting this on the chance that it may help some researcher to solve a mystery and get past a brick wall.
Im sorry it took me so long to reply. The information you gave me on August 10 was very helpful. Thank you! i believe that the information that you found for DeSoto County in 1870 included my great grandfather Richard Medlin. I had heard that his full name was John Richard but I did not know for sure. The census had in listed as John, age 3, born in North Carolina. My great grandfather was Levi and Mary's only child that was born in North Carolina. The rest were born in Mississippi. I have not been able to find anything on Richard but it is probably because he is listed as John. Thank you again!

We have learned that James Monroe Medlin is not the son of Evelyn but the grandson of Jesse and his former wife, Catherine. Catherine, last name unknown at this time, died and then Jesse married Evelyn. Then Jesse died and Evelyn took care of all his children as well as two grandchildren. James Monroe was the son of Joseph B. Medlin who was the son of Jesse and Catherine. I have the sources for this information if you are interested.
At this writing, I am at the large Family History Library in Salt Lake City trying to find the parents of Jesse and to identify Catherine.

Thanks to all who have replied!

Willaim J Medlin )born about 1838, married Rebecca (Lindsay?) about 1859. William was born in Alabama (according to census data) and Rebecca was born in North Carolina. They lived in Welches, Macon, North Carolina in 1860, married for <1 year, but with no children yet. The 1880 census finds them in Knox, Tennessee, with 7 children, George, Martha, Frank, James, Arthur, Roscoe and Andrew. James is my husbands Great-Great Grandfather. James married Frances Hotchkiss, and they moved from NC to Texas. They had seven children, Nellie, Earl Pinkney, Bennie, Rex, Leland, Afred, Spencer. Rex Arthur Medlin is my husband's Grandfather. His daughter, Patsy Medlin, is my husband's (John Arthur Inmon's mother) I have more details of course, but nothing so far to be certain who are Willaim J. Inmon's parents. The census before 1860 don't list the children by name, just the number. There is a Medlin family reunion in Texas in a few weeks and I am working hard to get the information to present to everyone. Any help is much appreciated!!

Hi there! Well, I had gone looking to see if I could find Will. J. in the 1850 census, in some family group. There are a few Williams of about the right age, but the location and other things didn't quite fit. I tried a Soundex search as well, just in case it was spelling somewhat differently than usual.

I wonder if you know of the names of any of William J.'s siblings. It might help to look for those in 1850, to see if William is there grouped with the family. He could have been called by his middle name, for example, which wouldn't be apparent at first. Or Medlins buried near him, which would be of the same generation or earlier.

In 1860, of course, there is a Brittain/Britton Medlin, with wife Rachael and several children 16 and under, in Cowee, Macon Co., NC, where William J. was living at the time. It would be easy to assume William J. was at least the son of Britton. Brit. was born ca. 1804, so says the census. I wonder if he's the same as the War of 1812 veteran Britton Medlin, who had served in the Tennessee Volunteers. I'm not sure what information is located in military records for that particular time period, but if you suspect him to be related, it might (or might not) be worth obtaining from the National Archives, where I think the file would be located. (It's been a while since I've worked with military service files.)

I'll cast around a bit to see if I can find anything else that might be helpful

Thank you for that information! One of the problems searching for HL is the variety of names the enumerators wrote down.

For example:
1910 Civil War Veterans for Desoto County, MS. US Genweb Project
(Submitted by Tim Harrison and The Genealogical Society of DeSoto County)
MERDLIN (sic) H. Lea. W, age 67. enlisted in: NC. Medlin, Co. E, musician, William G. Medlin, Co. G, pvt; Gaston Medlin, Co. G, pvt; and H. L. Medling, Co. Ann Watkins, possibly Ann Medlin, three houses from Allen and Jenifer Medlin, Paupers. The children living with Allen are not likely his, because of their ages, perhaps grandchildren. The greater possibility, considering Ann’s age, is that she is Lee Medlin’s mother, remarried to the widower Watkins. [Speculation]

I also found HL in the Tate Co. Genweb project site. (“1892 & 94 Tate Co, MS School Enumeration HL Medlin,” Tate Co.
Samuel Raleigh Medlin (1880-1956) Kentucky to So. Illinois

I am looking for information on the PARENTS of SAMUEL RALEIGH MEDLIN. Samuel was Born in Kentucky in 1880, and later lived in Southern Illinois, where he died in 1956. The 1880 census shows him (1 mos old) living with THOMAS MEDLIN and LEVINA MEDLIN (maiden name unk), along with 3 other Medlin children (WILLIAM H., JOSEPH P., and SUSANNAH E.). However, I don't think Thomas and Lavina were his parents because the other 3 children are listed as sons or daughters of Thomas, but Samuel is listed as "not a direct relation". Also, the census names Kentucky as the "father's birthplace" of the other 3 children, but names Illinois as the "father's birthplace" for Samuel.

The only other info I have to go on is a partial family tree started decades ago by someone in my family (who's now deceased). It shows Samuel's father as JESSE MEDLIN - but lists no DOB, spouse, parents, locations, or any other info - so I don't think she was too certain of the information either. I've found a few JESSE MEDLINs, but none born in what would seem to be the right time frame or part of the country to be SAMUEL MEDLIN's father.

Does anyone know anything about a JESSE MEDLIN that might have fathered a child in 1880, which for some reason was then raised by THOMAS and LAVINA MEDLIN?

My great-grandfather was also Charles A. Meadlin. My grandfather was James William Meadlin. My father was Kesler Doyle Meadlin the youngest son of James William and Annie Kesler Meadlin. I would love to find out about the family of Julina Meadlin and Doc Alfonso Wood. Do they have daughters named Irene and Ione? My grandparents lived in Cooper, Tx, but they made many trips to their beloved Berryville, Arkansas. Thanks for any information you can share about your part of the family.

Henry Lee "Levi" Medlin fought in the War Between the States(Civil War) in Company G, 7th Regiment North Carolina Troops. He was from Wake County, NC. He was captured on 29 July 1864 at the Battle Of Gravel Hill (Virginia), and confined at Point Lookout, Maryland on 1 August 1864, then transfered to ELMIRA PRISON in Elmira, New York on 12 August 1864. Levi took the "Oath Of Allegiance" on 29 May 1865 and was then released from Elmira Prison on the very same day. ELMIRA PRISON had the highest mortality rate of any prison North or South. I know he suffered from DYSENTERY, which was probably the number one killer of all soldiers during the war. I have been told that later in life, whenever he heard DIXIE being played, he got up and danced a jig.
Levi, at age 65, married a Lillie Chamblee/Shamblee who was like age 14 at the time. She is buried at LEBANON also.
I would certainly like to know everything that you have heard about Levi.
Everyone seems to be at a complete dead end in regards to Mary Jane Piles/Pyles. Levi married her in Wake County on 31 May 1866, almost exactly one year after he was released from the yankee prison.
I sure would like to know every scrap of everything you have been told about Levi and Mary.
