MEECHAN , Robert J. M.D.

Robert J. Meechan, M.D. passed away peacefully in his home Aug. 31, 2008, at the age of 82.

Born Aug. 25, 1926, in Usk, Wash., he spent his youth in Echo, Ore. He was the son of Robert and Katherine; the step-son of George Williams; and brother of James and Carol Rae. A graduate of Echo High School, Oregon State University and OHSU Medical School, he completed his pediatric training at Doernbecher Memorial Hospital for Children and joined the faculty at OHSU in 1957. He became professor of pediatrics and served as director of the pediatric outpatient clinic.

In December 1952 he married Brenda Hanrahan of Woodburn. They were married for 55 years and have three sons, Robert D. of Kona, Hawaii, Patrick J. of Portland, and Peter T. of Pleasanton, Calif.

Robert served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and as a Naval reservist following the war. He and Brenda enjoyed playing bridge. They were members of St Peters Parish for 42 years.

Dr. Meechan remained at OHSU until his retirement in 1989. His career was dedicated to the education of medical students and residents. His practical approach to the problems of children and their families served as an example for generations of Northwest pediatricians. He was widely recognized for his teaching abilities and received the Allan J. Hill Teaching award six times throughout his career at the medical school. Robert also served on the school's admissions committee from 1964 and served as the chair for many of those years. As chair of admissions he also served as associate dean. He is remembered by his colleagues and students for his stories and poems and his ever present sense of humor.

Robert is survived by his wife, Brenda; his sons and their wives; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A recitation of the rosary will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5, at St Peter Catholic Church in SE Portland, followed by a funeral Mass at 2 p.m. Friends and family are invited to join the family at a reception at the home of Robert and Brenda following Mass.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that remembrances be sent to the OHSU Foundation for Pediatric Education.
