Son Charles married Hester Catherine FREEMAN October 20, 1875 and they eventually moved to Nebraska. Robert may have had a male relative (son or nephew) named John MEEHAN in Wheatland, Indiana in 1920’s – he may have remarried.

My Meehan records gap

I believe that my great, great grandparents, Daniel Meehan and Mary White, were married in County Limerick between 1834 and 1838, and that their first son, John Meehan, was born in County Limerick in 1839. However, I have not been successful in locating any information for the birth of their second son, and my great grandfather, Daniel Meehan, in any County in Ireland between 1840 and 1852. Daniel and Mary White Meehan may also have been the parents of a third son, Charles, but I have not found any birth information for Charles Meehan in any County in Ireland between 1840 and 1852, nor have I found any information about the birth of any daughters.

The historical records I have been able to locate indicates that my gggf Daniel Meehan was married twice. First, to Mary White, who apparently died after the birth of Daniel or Charles. Second, to Winifred Smith. However, I have not been able to locate any death record for Mary White Meehan or marriage record for Daniel Meehan and Winifred Smith

I have found my gggf and Winifred Smith in County Sligo, Parish of Skreen & Dromard, Townland of Carrownaboll, where three sons were born to them between 1852 and 1858, James, Andrew, and Patrick. I have obtained the birth/baptismal information for James, Andrew, and Patrick from the County Sligo Genealogy Center. Gggf Daniel Meehan, Winifred Smith Meehan, and six sons John, Daniel (my gggf), Charles, James, Andrew, and Patrick, all left County Sligo between 1860 and 1870 and migrated to the USA, settling in a town now named Jermyn in the northeastern part of Pennsylvania.

I have checked with the County Leitrim Genealogy Center, but was advised that no records could be found in County Leitrim matching any of my Meehan family information. So, if anyone has any ideas, suggestions, etc., where I might look to try to fill in my record gap between 1839 in County Limerick and 1852 in County Sligo I sure would appreciate receiving them.

Thanks,
Rob
Hi ... I was reading your messages and it seems that we are related. I am the person who posted on Ancestry / Rootsweb a while back, referring to the Ellen Meehan who was the daughter of Thomas Meehan and Mary Dunleavy. I wonder if you can provide your personal email so that we can exchange notes. I am a descendent of Ellen Meehan, and have an extensive record on the Meehan / Morley (Marley) family. Contact me at tamerlag@earthlink.net ... Thanks. George

Margaret Meehan was my gggrandmother. I am able to find so little on her. I'd truly appreciate this.
b. October 9, 1867 in Carney, Sligo, Ireland. Her parents, according to her death certificate, were James Meehan and Anna Gillan. She has at least one brother, listed on the Family Search site, James b. September 4, 1866.

She was also related to a Bridget Meehan. b. in Ireland, Sligo Cty, 4/18/1855. Bridget was somehow related to the Higgins family. She immigrated in 1927 or so to be with Margaret.

How can I get her birth info, family info, vital statistics?
Thanks,
G. Price

John Meehan, born 1 Oct 1854, Gaines, Kent County, Michigan

John was the son of Michael T. Meehan born Sep 1821 in County Tipperary, Ireland, and Mary Troy born 14 Aug 1819 in County Tipperary, Ireland. The Troys immigrated around 1847. The Meehans around 1850. They were married 1 Nov 1853 in Kent County, Michigan. They had five children: John, Nora, David, Mary and Joanna. I can't trace John past the 1900 census or Mary past the 1880.
The Troys are my real interest but I would like to complete this family. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It is just a name coincidence. People weren't terribly original with their names. Thanks for the reply!

Where was this taken? I have a Katherine Josephine Meehan as a Great Grandmother. She died in the early 1940's in her 70's. I have no pictures of her. Mine was a real estate person in Arizona in later life. She also had a home in Los Angeles. The thing is...she was married to a Drew. So, if your photo is labeled Meehan, it wouldn't be right since she would be called Drew. She also doesn't look too much like us. :)

Hello,
My grandmother is the daughter of Theodore Tierney Meehan, and granddaugher of Patrick C. Meehan and Julia Fagan. Unfortunately, although she knows much about the family, she does not know the names of either Patrick or Julia's parents, or when they arrived in this country. She does point out that there were in fact 10 children born; John died young of measles, and there was another daughter, Rose born after Harry.

Patrick Chrysostom Meehan was in the prosperous coffee trade in Manhatten, owning an import/export company named P.C. Meehan and Co. Julia Fagan Meehan was born on Waverly Pl. in lower Manhatten. Julia and Patrick lived on East 52nd street in Manhatten before moving into a 48 W. 69th street brownstone house. A Mathew Brady daguerreotype of P.C. Meehan was produced and eventually given to my grandmother by her aunt, Katharine Meehan.
My grandmother remembers meeting the children of Frank Meehan, who had lived in Mexico for a time.
Cheers!

Some errata and clarifications:

Actual name of my GGrandfather is Theodore Thierry Meehan; his middle name given him by his father in honor of a close friend who was a French priest. Theodore T. Meehan (b. 1/31/1877 d. 10/1/1949) married Anna Hergert (b. 1/12/1885 d. 7/23/1979) on 9/9/1908.

Theodore Meehan was the son of Patrick Chrysostom Meehan b. 1839 in NYC and Julia A. Fagan b. 1841 also NYC. A will very recently unearthed by my grandmother lists Julia A. Fagan as d. 4/10/1927 in NYC and lists her father as one Charles J. Fagan, a property owner in Manhattan.

Hope this helps clarify some things.

William Meehan and Alice Meehan were my great-grandparents. I have some information but I have nothing on William Meehan before he came to Fredericton to work in the cotton mill in the early 1900's

My mistake -- I missed a generation in there. John Meehan & Theresa Rank are my great great grandparents. Their son Claude and his wife Estella are my great grandparents, and Claude & Estella's son Norbert G. Meehan is my grandfather.

My grandfather always claimed that his ancestry was mostly German, but that "there must've been an Irishman in there somewhere" due to the Meehan name :) I now know the identity of that Irishman. He also knew there was some French blood in his ancestry, presumably explained by the Marchal connection.

Not sure if anyone is still following this thread -- last post was more than a year ago.

Anyway, my grandfather was Norbert Meehan born 1912 in Fort Wayne. Married Luella Rogge born 1911 also in Fort Wayne. They relocated to Chicago and had three children -- James born 1945 (my father), Susan, and Nancy.

Presumably John & Theresa are my great grandparents -- I'll check with my dad. Norbert lost touch with a lot of his family after moving to Chicago, although my grandmother was closer to hers and my dad can remember visiting Ft. Wayne relatives as a child.

Meehan

I'm having a horrible time trying to find my ancestors in Ireland, probably because I'm not positive that they hailed from County Cork although that's what I've been told, and even though I may have a county name, I don't know which parish or the date that my second great grandfather and his brother left Ireland. All I do know is that their names were Daniel Frederic Meehan and John Meehan. Daniel Meehan was born about 1833 in Ireland and I've found him and his family in Fredericton, York County, New Brunswick. I've found a few newspaper articles on him and his brother, Father John Meehan in the Provincial Archives of New Brunswick. Their father's name was Patrick Meehan and he was born about 1803 in Ireland and apparently died in Ireland. I haven't found him here except for someone with the same name on a baptism record for Frederic Joseph Meehan, born July 1881 in New Brunswick, baptized on 17 July 1881. Parents names were Daniel Meehan and Jane Quigley (my second great grandparents). Patrick Meehan and Elizabeth McIntosh were listed on this record (Drioun Records at Ancestry.com)as sponsors of the parents and baby. Father John Meehan was a Catholic priest and was ordained at Montreal in 1878 and was living in Ottawa in 1882. I've found nothing more on him in the Census records or any place else that I've looked. I did find a marriage record for Daniel and Jane. The information that I do have is this:

Patrick Meehan, born about 1803, Ireland (possibly County Cork) married "Irish Wife Unknown" who was also born in Ireland, probably around 1805. They had the following children (that I know of); John Meehan, born between 1830 and 1835 and Daniel Frederic Meehan, born about 1833, Ireland, sailed to New Brunswick sometime during the late 1850's (I'm guessing this because I found his marriage record to Jane Quigley on the Drouin Records stating the date as 07 January 1863, St. Dunstan's Roman Catholic Church, Fredericton.) I don't know where either of the brothers died. (Jane Quigley was born about 1837-39 in Ireland and died in Fredericton, New Brunswick on 11 September 1893. (I think Jane's parents were Thomas Quigley and Mary Unknown.) Daniel and Jane had the following children:

1. Patrick John (John Patrick, he seemed to change his name around because he liked to?)Meehan, also known as Pat, born March or April (depending on his preference as I've found two dates within days of each other)1872, Fredericton, York County, New Brunswick, married Elizabeth King (daughter of Firmin King (aka Roy) and Susan Muskraw (aka Suzanne Mazerolle, we think) on 20 June 1897. Elizabeth was born 6 January 1874 in Fredericton, York County, New Brunswick and she died on 10 May 1913 in Lynn, Essex County, Massachusetts. Patrick died on 16 October 1918 in Lynn, Essex County, Massachusetts. Elizabeth and Patrick had nine children, five survived.
2. Mary Ann Elizabeth Meehan, born October 1863, Fredericton, York County, New Brunswick
3. Jane Livinia Meehan, born January 1869, Fredericton, York County, New Brunswick, married (1) Francis M. O'Brien27 November 1889, St. Dunstan's Roman Catholic Church, Fredericton, Francis died 28 August 1892 in Maine, she married (2) Samuel Robichaud about 1902 in Lynn, Essex County, Massachusetts. Jane had three children with each husband. One daughter, Janie Irene O'Brien died the same year that her father died.
4. Helena Florence Meehan, born about 1870, Fredericton, York County, New Brunswick, married Sylvester/Sylvain Thomas LeBlanc on 30 August 1896 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Lynn, Essex County, Massachusetts. Helena Meehan and Sylvain had eight children.
5. Roselle/Rosella Meehan, born about 1873, Fredericton, York County, New Brunswick, died November 1896 in Fredericton, York County, New Brunswick
6. Kathleen Meehan, born about 1878, Fredericton, York County, New Brunswick, married George Stuart Stanger before 1902 in Fredericton, and she died after 1917 (I don't know where). Kathleen and George had two children that I've found.
7. Frederic Joseph Meehan, born 02 July 1881 in Fredericton, York County, New Brunswick (I just found this child yesterday and have no idea when he died but he is not listed on the 1881 Census of Canada and I don't know what date that was taken and he's also not listed on the 1891 Census of Canada.
If any of these names sound familiar to anyone, please contact me. I'm not sure where to look for information other than to just put it out here on this site and keep my fingers crossed. Thank you in advance for any information that can be provided to help me find more information. Pam

Very interested to see today's post. This couple are my husband Frank's grandparents. Particularly interested in the daguerrotype. Is there any way this can be copied? We would be thrilled to see it....and would, of course, pay any expenses for copying and mailing. We actually visited the house on W. 69th a few years ago. Frank and his brother and 3 sisters were all born in Mexico and occasionally visited that house in their youth. One sister (Julie) died a few years ago...the others are all still living in Texas and Arizona. Thank you so much for the information you provided. (Julia's birthplace and Theodore's middle name). These could be a help in finding further facts. Thank you again. Greta Meehan
Please feel free to contact me.

I am responding to your Theodore TIERNEY MEEHAN name.
My GGreat Grandfather Patrick TIERNEY married Margaret DILLON abt 1870. Probably in San Francisco, CA.
She was the daughter of Julia and Nicholas DILLON. Julia's maiden name was GREELEY/GREALEY. Julia's sister Mary b abt 1831 Ireland, married a Richard MEEHAN. I believe their son Robert MEEHAN b 1865 came from Ireland and settled in New York.
Since you show no dates in your posting I can't make a comparison.
Thank you for your response. I have been busy working on genealogy and gotten away from this project.

All that I have is from the Veteran's Affairs website and from the Provincial Archives information online.

I am retiring at the end of May and hope to get more time towards this project. The cenataph and the names have fascinated me since I started to work in Marysville Place and walked by them.

I am interested in their stories, especially why a young man from Marysville NB would go to Europe to fight a war.

Gail Darby
