MEEK family Ireland

I am seeking information about Moyra Moriarty Meek (born around 1886)also known as Mary Meek. She had a brother named Sam and I understand they were born near Belfast. Moyra emigrated to Canada in about 1907 and married John Cuthill. They lived in Calgary, Alberta as well as Seattle Washington and British Columbia. Mary was a nurse and her brother Sam was a lawyer. Any information would be appreciated.

I obtained a book "Rivers West" from interlibrary loan. It is a biography of Joe Meek. It is about 400 pages and detailed to read, but I found very little family tree info in it.
My dead end is Baker Meek of Alabama, b 1810 +/- M. 1833, lived in Lowndes Co., AL 1840-50-60, gone by 1870.
His wife was in Natichtoches, La. in 1870, near some of her children.

Since I wrote this inquiry, I have discovered the answer to my own question, which I thought I would share with the group in case someone else is interested.

James Matthew Meek married Dove Jenkins Waldeck in KY. Both moved to AR. The first three children, James Holmes Meek,Fedder Stickney Meek and Mary Hannah Meek were born in KY. The baby of the family, Virginia Meek was born in Pulaski County (Little Rock) AR.

James Matthew Meek's parents were John Wesley Meek and Mary Bell. John Wesley's parents were John Wesley Meek (Sr.)(born around 1801 in KY or VA) and Elizabeth Claxon. I am missing a connection on who John Wesley Meek Sr.'s parents were. Ultimately, however, DNA testing has shown we are related to Thomas Meek b) 1708 and John Meek b) 1707.

I'm looking for information on my grandmother, Lorena Estellee Meek Rose Scott, and her family. Her father was Joseph A. Meek, born in Tennessee about 1859. My grandmother was also born in Tennesee around 1893. By 1910, Joseph's wife had died, and he was living in Oklahoma with my grandmother--his daughter--(misspelled Estherlee) and her husband. I don't know anything else about her parents or siblings, and I can't find any information about either of these people before 1910. Any help would be appreciated.

Ausker married Martha Meek in 1871 and if memory serves me, they and their large family lived most of their lives in Wythe Cty.
I would like to obtain a copy of this family history if someone can point me to it.

Thanks in advance

Sandra Davis

I am searching for the family line of Tony Meek, who was in Benton Co AR in 1910 and in Greene Co MO in 1880. In 1880 he was living with Benjamin Meeks (age 36 born MO) and wife, Isabel (1836 born IN) and brother Elwood (1861 born AR).
Was Benjamin his father? I think Benjamin was the son of Richard Meek (1804 PA) and wife Indiana, who were in Dekalb Co MO in 1860-70-80.
Would love to hear from anyone familiar with Richard's line and see whether they have any information on his son Benjamin.

Thank you.

John Meek, brother of Cecil County MD Adam Meek and Jane Mitchell

Does anyone have information on John Meek of West Nottingham, Pennsylvania, d. 1763? Apparently his descendants are not as well documented as those of Adam Meek of Cecil, MD. I have found nothing about John on the mainstream genealogy websites.

My Nancy Drew efforts on the Internet have led me to a hypothetical connection to John Meek. The will of Jean the wife of Andrew Mitchell indicates that John Meek must have been a brother of Adam Meek of Cecil, Maryland, who married Jane Mitchell, Jean's daughter. (Jane Mitchell might also have been Jean but I'm calling her "Jane" to avoid confusion between her and her mother). Furthermore, John was married to Rebecca Mitchell, Jane Mitchell's sister.

Jane Mitchell moved to York, South Carolina, after her husband's death circa 1767.

I have a Rebecca _________, wife of _________ Newman, who gave birth to at least two children: Jonathan Newman b. 1764 and Rachel Newman b. 1766 (Jonathan married Elizabeth McElwee and Rachel married William McElwee III; Elizabeth and William were siblings). Rebecca's tombstone says she was born in 1730 and died in 1822 at age 92.

Rebecca Newman's husband is well known to her descendants to have been named Jonathan, and to have lived in North Carolina at the end of his life. I have heard Lincoln, North Carolina, as his final residence, and am still looking for the census that shows this. Lincoln, NC, was also the residence of Michael Newman (who wrote a will in 1795)and Thomas Newman. Somehow it's been shown that Thomas Newman was Thomas b. 1744 in Cecil Co. MD d. 1820 in Kentucky. Jonathan and Rebecca's son Jonathan also traveled to Kentucky. It makes sense that Jonathan husband of Rebecca was related to Thomas born in Cecil.

There was probably association between Adam Meek's family and the Newmans.

The most telling thing I have found is that John Meek, Adam's brother, has a little-known family with a daughter named Rebecca.

Could Rebecca Meek have been Mrs. Newman 1730-1822?

Here's what got me started in the Meek direction: one of Rachel Newman's sons has "Meek" for his middle name (William Meek McElwee); her firstborn is John and her secondborn Jane. Several of her grandchildren take the name "Meek".

It's a giant leap that makes a whole lot of sense to me, but it's all based on my intuition and the Internet; it desperately needs solid DNA or document proof.

I have a photo of Rebecca's descendant, Robert Newman Plaxco 1863-1935, if any John or Adam Meek descendants want to look for resemblances...though I'm not sure how much luck you'd have that many generations apart.

J.J. is a little obscure. Do you have a first name? I did find a Justin J Meek in Northern California in 1991. Born November 1946 or 1949, in the "US Public Records" here at ancestry.com. Where was this JJ born? If he was at UCLA, that doesn't mean that he stayed in California after graduating - he could have returned 'home'. Hope this helps you.
Laurice Johnson
Menifee, CA

LizD,

I found the post you sent on John Andrew Meek.

I have a couple of John Meek's in my data. I am the 4th Great Grandson to James Meek Born 1790 who was Lord Mayor of York in 1836, 1848, 1850. He had a Brother named John Meek (which I have no data on at all). Also James had a Son Sir James Meek Born Abt 1815 who was also the Lord Mayor of York in 1855, 1865, 1866. He also had a Brother named John Meek (Born March 03, 1793 I believe). Are any of these the John you are refering to? I would love to be able and track down a line from one of the brothers.
Hope to hear from you.

Kevin Meek
I always come back to places in the tree where there are gaps. My research only takes on a real focus when I have broken through a brick wall - otherwise, I take all the information as I find it, and frequently research several surnames at once if I am taking to the road to go to cemeteries, courthouses, etc.

Mary Emily (Conner) Meek Webb and James Alexander Meek were the parents of my great grandmother Maxie Leah (Meek) Williams, who was quite a character in her own right, according to my grandfather (her son).

When I inherited a family photo album upon my Grandmother Williams' death, there was a photo of Mary Emily Conner that survived, taken approximately 20 years before her death. She was quite a striking woman. From the pose in the photograph, I can imagine she was quite an outspoken woman.

The apple hasn't fallen far from that tree, either.

Polk Johnson, three volumes, Lewis Publishing Co., New York & Chicago, 1912. Common version, Vol. III, pp. 1304-06. Johnson County.

REV. ZEPHANIAH MEEK. The life of the Rev. Zephaniah MEEK demonstrates that if a man is determined to rise in the world there is nothing that can prevent it, and as an illustration of this a sketch of his career will be of use and therefore beneficial to all young men. Rev. Meek was born in Johnson County, KENTUCKY, on April 4, 1833, the son of Isaac and Sarah (Ward) MEEK, natives of Virginia, the former born August 20, 1810, and died in Johnson County, KENTUCKY, October 28, 1878, and the latter, born October 1, 1811, and died July 9, 1880. Isaac MEEK came to KENTUCKY when young with his parents, who settled in Johnson County and later went to Arkansas, where they made a home, the
father of Isaac being William MEEK. Isaac grew to manhood in Johnson County, KENTUCKY, married there and settled at the mouth of Greasy Creek, where he made a home for the remainder of his life. His wife was the daughter of Shadrach and Louisa Ward, and was a woman of strong mind and
great force of character, of sweet Christian spirit, a model of industry, thrift and economy, rearing a large family of sons and daughters. Amid pioneer surroundings in the hills of northeastern KENTUCKY, our subject, Zephaniah MEEK, the second son, grew to manhood. He had few opportunities for an education in his boyhood, but he supplemented the lack of high school and academies by reading and studying the best books he could borrow, and by systematic study he was at the age of thirty superior in knowledge and mental culture to almost anyone his age
in his native county. His religious independence in early youth was so marked as to cause him to pass the door of the church of his own people to enter communion with one more liberal and broad in doctrine and discipline. In early life he taught school and during those days married Mary Jane Davis, a member of an honorable pioneer family of Sandy Valley. She, by her solid sense, wise counsel and fervent piety proved herself a worthy helpmeet all along the road of their married life. He with his young wife after a few years in the country settled in Paintsville,
the county seat of Johnson County, where he acted as county and circuit clerk and was for several years engaged in mercantile pursuits, in the meantime adding to his fund of knowledge by every means possible. Upon attaining manhood Mr. Meek was licensed to preach in the Methodist Episcopal church, South, the only organization of Methodism above Louisa from the separation in 1844 to the war period in 1864, and he was regarded as a strong man in the church. In 1865, soon after the close of the Civil war, Mr. Meek moved to Catlettsburg and made some investments. In the spring of 1867 he started the "Christian Observer," which later became the "Central Methodist," as an organ of his church. This paper soon took a high rank and became the leading paper of the church, and by his able editorial management attained a large circulation and became a profitable property. Mr. Meek continued to be editor and
publisher until about 1898, when he sold and the plant was removed to Louisville and finally to Lexington, where the paper is still published as the "Central Methodist Advocate." He was the oldest editor in point of continuous service of the religious press in KENTUCKY. After retiring from the paper he became manager of the telephone system at Catlettsburg for about two years, and then engaged in the
feed business, in which he continued with success until his death, which occurred on September 4, 1909, at the age of seventy-six years and six months, after a long, active, career, an energetic worker in business and church affairs. He was a traveling elder in his conference but only took such pastoral charges as were within reach, selecting entirely new territory to perform ministerial work, his many labors being too pressing to allow constant work in pastorate. He received the degree of D.D. from the KENTUCKY Military Institute, Farmdale, KENTUCKY, in 1885, and was elected leading delegate to the general conference by the Western Virginia Conference in 1885, which met at Richmond, Virginia, in May, 1886. Rev. Meek is survived by his widow and children. Of the latter Rev. Lafayette MEEK, the first born, was educated a year at the East KENTUCKY Normal, at Millersburg, KENTUCKY, but transferred to Vanderbilt University, where he pursued a varied course,
and finally finished at the School of Theology. He went into the Tennessee conference and from the commencement was successful in ministry, but being stricken with typhoid fever, was taken to his father's house, accompanied by his young wife with her infant, and he died October 2, 1885, at the age of thirty-one. David MEEK, the oldest living son of Rev. Zephaniah MEEK, was born in Paintsville, KENTUCKY, November 25, 1858, and came with his parents to
Catlettsburg when fourteen years old, where he grew to manhood and has since resided. He attended school and the Eastern KENTUCKY Normal at Catlettsburg and later attended the KENTUCKY Military Institute near Frankfort. He was associated with his father in the newspaper work and
other business interests for many years and since the latter's death has continued the feed business which was previously incorporated as "The Z. Meek Company." He married twice, first to Lodema Coates, from which union six children were born, five of whom are living. A twin
daughter died at the age of eight months, and the others are Beulah, Lena, Sophia, John Wesley and Ray. Mr. Meek's second marriage was to Mamie Wyatt, by whom there was one daughter, Edith Augusta. In politics Mr. Meek is a Democrat. He is a member of the Modern Woodmen and Knights of the Maccabees, he having served several years as record keeper of the latter. He and his wife are members of the Methodist Episcopal church, South, and he is a member of the official board.
Report Abuse Print

Sharpchick13

I descend from another child of Alexander MEEK, grandfather of your James Alexander Meek.

Locate online either via the BYU Family History Book archive or search the LDS catalog at familysearch.org

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/Library/FHLC/frameset_fhlc.a...

One there click on Author Search and type "Meek Melton"... once it returns his name, click and you will see a listing of books - Choose "Guy Meek of Anne Arundel County, Maryland : descendants, intermarriages and neighbors,1660-2004"... when it loads click on "film notes in the top right" and then click on "To view a digital version of Vol. 2 of this book click "here""

Once you do this a new window will open and it will take you to the scanned book... click on the plus sign by "Alexander Meek" and navigate to pg 405 (top half of the page)... I love this first hand description of Alexander by your ancestress... I think it is very telling of both Alexander and her personality...

Also if you scroll the "contents" on the left side to the bottom you can download Vol. 2 as a pdf to your PC.

Melissa
