Searching for parents of Nancy Jane Meeker, Fulton County, IL

I'm trying to find the parents of Nancy Meeker. She was born April 10, 1840, in Fulton County, Illinois. She died May 31, 1885, at the age of 45. She was married first to Charles Stanley on April 29, 1857. They divorced a few years later (not sure of the date), and Charles took their son and told everyone that Nancy had died in 1861. He later remarried a Dorinda Bybee.

Nancy then married James E. Hodson on June 13, 1864, in Knox County, Illinois, although they continued to live in Fulton County. They had several children together. Her obit said she left behind her husband, James, and 10 children. She is buried in Orendorff Cemetary in Orion, Illinois. Her cemetery record states her date of death as May 31, 1885, and "fa Dan Meeker".

In 1850 census, she is living with the Jerod Wheadon family in Waterford. In the same census, there is a girl named Abigail Meeker living with the Thomas Bybee family in Buckhart (note that after Nancy, Charles married a Dorinda Bybee).

In the 1860 census, Nancy has apparently left Charles, and is living with David and Agibail (Meeker) Wilcoxen.

In the 1870 census, Nancy is married and living with James Hodson. Abigail is also still in Fulton County, with her husband David Wilcoxen. An Aaron Meeker is also living with Abigil and David.

In the 1880 census, Abigail and Nancy are each still living with their families in Fulton County. Aaron Meeker is now living with Nancy and James.

In the 1880 census, Abigail shows she was born in Illinois, and her parents with from Kentucky. Nancy shows she was born in Illinois, and her parents are from Ohio. Aaron also shows he was born in Illinois, and his parents are from Ohio.

I have been unable to find the parents of either Nancy, Abigail, or Aaron (although I think Aaron is the same as the 3-year-old Aaron living with Moses Meeker in the 1850 census).

Anyone have any further clues, or an idea of where I could search further? Any help would be appreciated!

Thank you!

Meeker/Girton connection?

Homer Virgil Meeker (1867-1936) was the son of Daniel Virgil and Lydia Jane (Alkire) Meeker. It appears some of Homer's children carried the name of Girtin/Girton. Possibly stepchildren?? Homer was born in Illinois; by 1910 he was living in Missouri.

Of 11 children, the eldest carried the Girtin name -- Lula, Lilia, Elizabeth and William (1885-1897). Perhaps his first wife was a Girtin/Girton? Homer married again in 1897.

My research involves the Girton line. Any help would be appreciated.
meeker ranch family in SD govt wants to burn it down

People upset about burning of Meeker Ranch buildings
Some say it's one of the few remaining old-time South Dakota ranches. But the buildings still standing on the Meeker Ranch, just east of Custer, are scheduled to be burned down by the Forest Service in the coming years. This has caused an outcry from a few community members. Black Hills FOX Reporter Megan Palera has more. The cabin that sits on the Meeker Ranch dates back to the 1800s, and it's the only part of the ranch with any historic value. But Black Hills artist Jon Crane believes that the entire ranch represents South Dakota's heritage, and he wants to see the other buildings preserved. The ranch has been unoccupied since the 1950's and many of the buildings are now falling apart. But Crane still believes that the site is worthy of saving. Jon Crane says, "These old structures are just so beautiful and I think everybody should have a chance to see what things used to be like here." The ranch now sits on Forest Service land, and Public Affairs Officer Frank Carroll says that, before passing away, the original owner sold the property to the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation with the wishes of removing the buildings and restoring the area to its natural state for wildlife habitat. Carroll says, "That's all they're going to see is that glorious little valley that's part of the wildlife preserve. That's the way the original owners want it and that's in the public interest, and that's how we want it." Carroll says keeping the buildings at their original location is no longer up for discussion, but the Forest Service will consider the option of restoring the buildings at another location if someone is interested in funding the project.
http://www.kevn.com/NewsStories.aspx?StoryID=7061&CatID=...

Thadius "Homer" Meeker b 1839 NY, then MO - Alice Arnetta Pennel

I've been helping my wife proceed in her family research but her Meeker family line is difficult. Perhaps someone can help us keep progressing.

Most of what we have right now is from census records. Thadius "Homer" Meeker was born around 1839 in NY and married Alice Arnetta "Nettie A." Pennel [not positive on spelling] who was born on Dec 3, 1857 in IN. They were marrried around 1874 and had at least four children, all born in Missouri:

1) Clifford Homer Meeker, Jul 29, 1886 Plattsburg, Clinton Co., MO – Aug 4, 1954 [heart attack] Kansas City, Clay Co., MO (my wife's great-grandfather)
2) Frank Artley Meeker, Sep 22, 1877 Sugar Creek, Jackson Co., MO
3) Unknown daughter who married a Mr. Brown - this is a guess because Frank had a niece named Alice Brown living with him in 1930
4) Pearl M. (Meeker) Sauer, May 1883 MO, wid by 1920

The 1880 US census gap has been a problem for us. Thadius Meeker was dead by the 1900 census and most of the family stayed together in Clay Co., MO according to the 1920 and 1930 census

Can anyone help us out with more information for Thadius Meeker and his family in NY?

According to census records Alice's parents were Pearce or Pierce B. Penell b around 182i in KY and Nancy Thrustfield or Thurstfield b around 1829 in IN. Alice and at least four siblings were all born in IN and the family appeared in KS in 1865 before settling in MO prior to 1870. The family appears to have been affected by illness or the Civil War because the children are scatterd among other families in KS and MO in the 1970 census. I have been unable to find any reference to her parents or her older brother in any census records past 1865. If anyone can help us out with this family, we would appreciate that as well.

Thank you,
Mark

7 January 1937 The People’s Defender
Meeker Killed At Portsmouth
Former County Resident Is Victim of Being Buried Alive While At Work Last Thusday
Services Saturday
Was Son of Former Deputy Sheriff of Adams; Resided At Blue Creek in Boyhood Days
Forrest Meeker, age 50 years, former resident of Adams county, was almost instantly killed last Thursday morning when buried beneath slag at the Portsmouth Works of the Wheeling Steel Corporation and was crushed to death.
Mr. Meeker was operating the crane to transfer the slag for the construction of a roadway for a railroad track in the yards and was moving the slag from along the side of the track to the fill from in front of the crane.
According to witnesses a bucket was being used on the crane to lift the slag and at the time the bucket was about half full. Mr. Meeker started to make the lift and the crane turned over.
Seeing what was happening Mr. meeker started to jump from the crane but failed to clear the heavy piece of machinery as it fell and buried him beneath the slag.
All available help in the yards was rushed to the scene and nearly thirty minutes was required to extricate the victim’s body from beneath the slag.
Officials of the plant have failed to determine what caused the crane to overturn. The crane was damaged slightly.
Mr. Meeker was the son of Mr. Aaron Meeker of Blue Creek, his father serving as deputy sheriff under Charles Meek. He attended the Blue Creek schools and later went to Portsmouth where he became employed with Portsmouth division of the Wheeling Steel Corporation.
He was united to Miss Ida Copas of Portsmouth on December 13, 1910.
Surviving the deceased are his widow, his father, two brothers, George of Columbus and James of Churn Creek, and a sister, Mrs. Arbie Irvin of Portsmouth.
Funeral services were conducted at the Windel-Howland Funeral Home in Portsmouth Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Dunbar H. Ogden Jr. in charge and interment made in the Copas cemetery in Jefferson township.
Mrs. Lizzie Meeker, b. abt. 1840, poss. Chicago area

I am looking for a woman whose married name is Lizzie Meeker. I have so few clues it is pitiful. I don't know her husband's name, and I don't know her maiden name, but I do know that her mother's maiden name is Margaret(ta) Van Valin. I know Lizzie had a sister named Mrs. Freelove Thorington. And I know the family lived in Chicago around the time of the civil war. The mother, Margaretta, was born in 1812, so I'm estimating birth between 1835-1850.

If anyone has a Lizzie/Elizabeth married into their Meeker lines whose description might make a match, I'd appreciate hearing from you.

I have located the above couple in Vigo County, IN in 1850. James was born in NJ 1801, Sarah was born in NY in 1802. They had a daughter Catherine, 7, b in IL. Does anyone know anything further about this family? I think I know who they are, but where did they live in Illinois? Where were they in earlier or later census? Were there other children? Will happily share any info. Sharon Meeker, NJ

Need info on Squire and Phebe (Wixom) Meeker marriage date and place. From Meeker family histories she has always been a Wixom but no proof. My g-grand father Melvile was her son. Her parents, birthplace, date unknown.
We have found both Squire and Phebe signing a land deed in Tazewell Co. Ill. in 1833, both of them signed. We also have found where Squire Meeker sold land to Nathan Wixom in Tazewell Co.Ill. in 1833, other names are Nathan Wixom and Soloman Wixom, could they be related? HELP

Eli, Eliza Meeker with sons Charles and Edward in Vermont

I am researching Rev. Eli Meeker, wife Eliza, with sons, Charles and Edward in Vermont early 1800's. I believe Eli was a Rev. in the Presbyterian church. Who is Eli's father?
I also have Charles married to Mary R (ages 41) with children: Elizabeth (age 13), Helen (age 10), Charles (age 8), with mother Eliza a widow age 62 and brother Edward J. (age 26) living with the family in the 1860 census from Manchester, Burlington Co, Vermont. I know that they moved from Vermont to Iowa (Apponoose County) and are buried there. I have their records from that county. ANY help is appreciated.

I found a note on some genealogical scribblings about Nellie STAFFORD and George MEEKER, Albany, Indiana. (Stafford is either his middle name or last name.) There is also a note that Nellie was "Old Bart's daughter." I have no idea what these notes mean yet, but if there is anyone out there who has a clue, please let me know. Please also see my previous query regarding EZRA GILMAN MEEKER. He must have something to do with Nellie and George!

Johnathan Meeker m. Caroline Unknown

Does anyone have any info on Johnathan Meeker born 1817 in NY (possibly Oneida Co.)? He married Caroline Unknown born 1826 in England. As of the 1870 census, they had 8 children: Lovina Adell, Franklin, Caroline, Jefferson, Sheldon, Eugene, Jonathan, and Wilbert(sp?). I found a Sheldon Meeker in the 1900 census of Rome, Oneida Co. who was the right age. He was married to a Celestia with their only son (who was 10) , Roy. I descend from Lovina Adell's marriage with Walter Williams. Any info on this family would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.
-Shelby
