My grandmother was Julia Yackman of Perth Amboy, NJ. I recently learned that her maiden name was Mehelko (spelling?) She married Theodor Yackman, my grandfather. I wish I had more information, but she was very old when I was a child and she died about 16 years ago.

I don't know if any of this sounds familiar to you or not. My maiden name was MESAROS. I didn't know my father's family. Recently I started to research them and discovered that instead of Mesaros, their name was MIHALKO. His mother's maiden name was Ohotnicky and she was married twice. The second man she married was BINDAS and he died in a mill accident in SHaron. I do believe they were all from around the Johnstown area (possibly a place called Hannahstown?).

I have not seen the other spellings of the name Mehalko, although on my grandparents' wedding certificate it is spelled Malyok even though she always used Mehalko. My mother told me of a brother of my grandfather Charles, who was John Melalko, but he lived in Ohio. I have no information about my grandfather, not even parents' names.

My mother was a Mary Mehalko born in 1911 in Freeland, Pennsylvania, but her parents were Charles and Ellen Kruppa Mehalko. Charles had a brother, John, but my mother said this John lived in Ohio. I have no information about Charles' family and I am a beginner in trying to find information. All I do know is that my grandmother always said he was Austrian and he died in the 30's. On their marriage certificate the spelling is Matyok and on my mother's birth certificate it is Matyoko. I have no idea when it was changed to Mehalko.

John Mary Mehalko in Pennsylvania

I am researching the family of John Mary Mehalko of Sharon, PA. Their children were: 1)Frank, 2)Charlie, born 1908, 3)Mary, born 1911, 4)John, born 1914, 5)Annie, born March 29, 1917, 6)Michael, born 1920, 7)Stephen, born Aug. 1, 1923, and 8)Helen, born 1926.
John Mehalko was born about 1888. Mary Mehalko's maiden name may have been Stoyka or Stokya. I believe they were both born in eastern Europe.
I would appreciate any information about this family or about the origin of the Mehalko name.

Thank you Alex! Any additional information that you might have will be greatly appreciated. I have been told that John Mehalko came to the U.S. about 1904. I don't have any information about his life prior to that. It would be great if you would check to see if there is a connection.
