Mary Lynn, and Karl,
I did a search of the Mehl's from Erie, as I have a Michael Mehl who was a sponsor for my GG grandfather Jacob Matter on his naturalization record. Jacob Matter emigrated to Erie, PA in 1847 from the Alsace, France/Germany. Michael Mehl also emigrated in 1847, and he was naturalized in Erie, in 1869. I think possibly my Matter family was from the same location of the Alsace, but do not have an exact location. There were many Mehl families in Erie in the city directories for 1889-1893. There were three Johns listed. A John Mehl-carpenter, a John P.-carpenter, and John V.-bookbinder. There were two Georges. One was a carpenter, and one a carpenters apprentice. There was also listed a Andrew-laborer. Andrew was only listed through 1891. Michael was listed only on the 1860 PA. Census for Erie, PA. There was also a John Mehl listed in 1860 in the PA. Census. Does anyone have any connecting information on Michael Mehl, and anything that might connect to the Matter surname. It was changed to Matthers/ Mathers, and even some took the surname of Mattthews and Mathews in Erie. The list was to long to list here of all the Mehls that lived in Erie at that time. If anyone wants to check out names e-mail me at sue@remconinc.com I also have a current phone book of Erie, if anyone wants anything looked up. I have not done any cemetery searches for this surname.
