G H Meigs b 1847 either WV, VA or VT d before 1900 probably NV

His birth place changes depending on who reports it. On the 1880 for Wells, Elko NV he reports his birthplace as WV and both his parents birthplaces as VT. He married Martha ? who was Feb 1861 in CA. They had 3 children in NV. Laura b Dec 1879, Lucille b. 1883 and Kathrine b 1891. He died sometime before 1900. On the 1900 census for San Francico Martha is living there as a widow with her 3 daughters. Family lore says she took the daughters to find their fortunes in the gold fields of Alaska. Actually I think to find a rich husband. Which is what Laura did. She married Albert Fink, a lawyer from Louisville KY on 18 Dec 1901 in Nome Alaska. I don't know what became of the other 3 Meigs women, but when Albert made his fortune or got tired of the cold winters, he moved to Chicago IL and practiced his law trade there. One of the people who he defended was William Lorimar in a banking scandal which he lost. William Lorimar was thrown out of the US Senate for bribery. His actions caused the passage of the 17th amendment. Another famous crook he represented as a "Special Tax Attorney" was Al Capone in his tax evasion trial. He lost that one too.

Meiggs or Meigs 1891

I am looking for any information on my Grandmother. I
believe she was born on March 11,1891. I was told by my
Mother that her Mother was adopted and was given the name
of Frieda Louise Meiggs. Our family believed maybe an uncle
may have adopted her. On the 1930 census for Phila.Pa.
my Grandparents were listed @1101 N. Hancock St. I believe
they may have been married about 1906 in N.Y. or N.J.
Frieda Meiggs married Emanuel Heimlich and they had eight
children together. My Mother told me that she remembered
her Mother had a wealthy sister who she belived lived and
owned a store in N.Y. and when she visited would try to talk
my Grandmother into letting her take my Mother and raise
her.The confusing thing was on the 1930 census when she
said her parents were from PA. Also I found something that
said Frieda Hermina Meiggs. On my Mother's birth certificate
her name is spelled as Meigs. I sure hope some one will be
able to help me as this is all I can find. My Mother just
passed away and also had Dementia so was unable to help
me in any research. My Grandmother was fifteen when
married. Thank You for your time and information.
Millie

Could Jonathan be the father of Josiah Meigs. I've never found who Josiah's father was. He was a brother to Johnathan Return Meigs who was born 17 Nov 1764, Middletown Ct. Josiah was born in Middletown CT, 21 Aug 1757. Josiah was the first president of the University of GA. Josiah's son Charles Delucena Meigs was born in Augusta GA. Charle's son Montgomery Cunningham Meigs was born in Augusta also.
MC Meigs was Quartermaster General in the Union Army during the Civil war. In 1864 him and his quartermaster corps were sent to Savannah GA to resupply Gen Sherman on his march across GA. Augusta was the only major Georgia town that was not burnt by Sherman. History says it is because Sherman was station there as a LT and had a soft spot in his heart for the town. I think it is because. Gen Meigs told him not to burn down his hometown. Another historical note: Another Gen Montgomery C Meigs a direct descendant of the Civil war general was the Commander of the Stabilisation Force in Bosnia-Herzegovina during the 1998 Bosnian Conflict. I tracked him down to the University of Texas where he was a professor after he retired from the Army. I wrote him an email asking him for comments but was never answered.
In reference to Montgomery C. Meigs (1847 - 1931) I am in the process of publishing a book (non- profit University of Oklahoma Press) concerning the Northern Pacific Railroad's surveyors from 1870-1873. I have some of Meig's letters from this period, but sketches that he drew appear to be missing. As best I can determine they were last held by his grandson, Montgomery M. Orr of the Sante Fe, NM area in the 1980's. I have copies of the sketches from a microfilm copy, but the collection is incomplete. Do you know who I might contact for further information?

Hi Paul,
My husband’s GGG grandfather was David Meigs who married Matilda Bennett. She was born in 1804 in Lodi, Seneca, NY. Based on Matilda’s birth date, David was probably born about 1800 in Vermont (according to his daughter’s 1880 & 1900 census reports). David & Matilda had at least 4 children: Levert b:1828 in NY, Martha (Meigs) Phelps b:1840 in Iowa, I think there was a daughter born 1825-1830, and a son born 1830-1835.

In about 1845 the family moved form Iowa to Loami, Sangamon, Illinois. David died bef 1850, probably in Illinois.

Lodi, NY is near Van Buren, NY and my David’s age is about right for him to be a son of Phineas & Elizabeth.

Do your records have a David?

Other questions about the Van Buren Meigs’:
When I was researching the Van Buren Meigs’ I came across a Sarah Meigs b:1786 in NY with a son Phillip b:1810. Do you know who Sarah was married to?

I found a Hannah Meigs b: 1804 in NY with a daughter Sarah b:1834 and I think a son Henry L. b:1831. Do you know who Hannah was married to?

The Onondaga Centennial history mentions Phineas and his wife coming to the area in 1820 with a 16 year old son. Do you know the name of this son and did he marry Hannah?

In the 1830 and 1870 census I saw a Hamlet Meigs. I think he was married to Sally Cook b: 1904. Does this match your records?

Thanks for any info you can share!
Suzi
Yes, I do. Samuel Meigs was born August 22, 1706, died September 1, 1751. He was the son of Deacon John Meigs of East Guilford, Connecticut (born 1670, died 1718.) Samuel's mother was Rebecca Hand, daughter of John and Rebecca Bushnell.

Samuel married Mindwell Norton, daughter of Samuel Norton of Guilford, Connecticut. They married on Nov. 4, 1731.

They had the following children:
Rebecca, born Mar. 4, 1733, Felix, born Oct. 12, 1735, Lydia, born March 5, 1739, Samuel, born Mar. 14, 1744, and Mindwell, born June 14, 1747.

Mindwell Norton Meigs died September 20, 1750.

Patty Quinn Meigs

I MEANT to say the daughter of John Hand and Rebecca Bushnell.

Now, here goes:

Tryal Meigs, born 1646, died 1690. Daughter of John Meigs, born Feb. 29, 1612, England, died January 4, 1672, and Tamazin Fry of Weymouth, England.

Tryal married Andrew Ward of Killingworth, Connecticut in 1668.

John Meigs was the son of Vincent Meigs, born 1583 and died December 1, 1658.

For the BEST Meigs information, go to Rick Meigs' web site.

I have a fairly complete documented history of the Meigs family, dating from Vincent, born 1583 to today. I will be glad to help anyone who is searching on this family. I have opened an e-mail account for the Meigs research and will be glad to answer and help: TMeigs@hotmail.com

One thing to note: This family is the most documented family in genealogy. There are literally books written concerning this family line, and the information can be found almost anywhere, if you know where to search.

The Meigs family line is a "direct line decendancy" which means if the name is Meigs, it is indeed related somewhere. I can also direct some people to web sites for the Meigs family.
