Re: Richer married to Alice McKay

Hi Cheryl,

I saw your message on the board. I was wondering if you could help me, I have been searching for a very long time. My father Albert Joseph Richer was born in Limoges (aka South Indian), Ontario June 3 1914 and died in Ottawa June 7 1994. I am looking for the names of his parents. I just learned his mothers name was Alice McKay and had an Irish background. She had a sister named Mary of Ottawa, and a brother Arthur of Niagra Falls. Unfortunately, I don't have any info on his father, only that he could have had a french background. When I was growing up my father told us how he was raised by his Aunt Mary McKay because his parents were killed in a train crash. I just learned that this is not true and that his mother died when she was in her early 20's of TB. If this was the case what happened to his father. I have a lot of questions, but finding his parents names first would be a good start. Thank you so much for your time.
Diane Ritchie, Ottawa, Ontario
PS - my father changed his name to Ritchie in 1906's when he tried to get a marriage licence. Since the church burnt down in 1924 including the birth and marriage records, he could not prove his parentage. The minister at the time gave him a chose of last names, Richer or Ritchie. He later changed it back to Richer after he divorced my mother. Sorry, it is all very confusing.

I noticed your message on the Richer Ancestory Board. Would you happen to have any information on a Albert Joseph Richer born June 3 1914 Limoges and died June 7 1994 in Ottawa. After he married he changed his last name to Ritchie. He may have been married more than once. I don't have any information on his parents except that they may have been killed in a train wreck and that he could have been a principal and she, a school teacher. Not sure if this information in accurate. Could you help. Thank you so much for your time.
Diane Ritchie in Ottawa.

Cheryl,
Not sure if I can help. My husbands Richer family
come from Sudbury, Ontario and around Quebec. Do you know what area
of Canada your Richer would be from and what time period are you interested in?
My brother-in-law did an extensive family research project (in print) which I have so I can look through if
you have more information (first names, etc.)
Heather Richer

Hi,

I have the book called "Marriages of St-Benoit, 1799-1984, Deux-Montagnes County, Quebec, Canada" and I found the following information :

#526- CASSE, Paul, (son of François Casse & Marie Joly),
M 10-01-1842
RICHER, Théotiste (daughter of Jean-Baptiste Richer & Thérèse Duprat).

The groom is said to be "major" at the times of the marriage (meaning older than 25 years old), and the bride "minor"(younger than 25 years old).

There is just one other marriage by the name of "CASSE" in the book.
Hope this can help you.

Regards,

Lucie
