I have no idea if I could be related to your "clan". I unfortunately know little of my Melby side of the family. My fathers' name is David Paul Melby and I remember being told that I was named after my grandfather (Edward Melby). We visited once when I was very little to a farm I believe was somewhere near Marshall, MN. For some reason I want to say Lake Wilson but probably wrong. I know it was Lake something Like that isn't unique :) My dad was half norwegian and half german. Sorry, but do not remember grandmothers name. If this is helpful, please reply to edmelby@yahoo.com. Have great day :) Ed

Hello Hannah, Your message was originally found by Edie Crispin (Thorsen's) son, Kenneth, while he was doing ancestral research. It was forwarded by Edie to Helen (Melby) Haegeland. Helen forwarded your link to us. Otto Melby, who attended Salem, is now 71 years old and retired and living in Florida. He married Donna in 1955 and they have six children and 14 grandchildren. Otto remembers you, Clara, and Ginny well from Salem. We would like to hear about you, Hannah, and your family. If you would like to correspond, email would be the best way. Otto and Donna Melby

Severin (the father) Melby came from Minnesota. He died on April 12, 1920 in the county of Pine, Minnesota? I am wondering what happened to the son? Thank you!

Thank you for replying to my inquiry. Anton Melby came from Lillehamer, Norway. I believe his name there was Jenson. When he came to America, he worked for someone here with the last name of Melby. I guess it was the practice to change your name to that of the person you worked for. I may have a few of those facts slightly incorrect, but I know that's the general story.

Nikki Melton

Hello, Nicola.

I just saw your post and am rather intrigued. My mother's family is from Black River Falls, WI and her maiden name was Melbye. The people you mention don't match those of my known relatives. My great grandfather was Simon Melbye (he spelled it Melbó in Norway) and he immigrated about 1903. Simon married Alice Peterson and they had 8 kids -- 4 sons, 4 daughters. I haven't yet done much research into this part of my family. The name Melby[e] doesn't seem too common so if they still lived in the BRF area it's likely my family knew of them. I don't recall anyone mentioning other folks by that name but I can ask.

Hi George Melby..
My grandfather, Gunerius Melby came from Verdal,Norway and the farm name was Melbyvald. When Gunerius came to America, he then used the surname "Melby." My uncle, who is now deceased was named George M. Melby also. Where are your ancestors from? I have (sort of) completed a family tree on the Melby family, and am wondering if your Melbys came from the same area/farm as my family.
Laurie J.

Melby origin? Meaning?

Hello! From what I have been told, and see bby the map in Norway,
there are three towns named Melby. Melby is actually an English name
and was imported by the Vikings (darn them!) from England to Norway during their more adventurous days.
Please view The Melby Family Tree on MyFamily.com or email me if interested.
Sincerely,
George M. Melby
gmmelby@juno.com

Melby/Melbey/Milby

My gggrm was Mary Elizabeth Melby (sp?), she was born in May of 1855 and had at least 2 sisters: Anna and Sarah. Their mother is possibly Helen Melby and was born November 1824 in Scotland and came to America in 1849. Mary was married to Wilford "Scott" Kuhns and they lived in Allegheny County, PA and had the following children: James Kuhns, Minnie Irene, Pearl Isabella (b. 6/13/1894), Ida, Mae and Sadie (Sarah) kuhns. Wilford died in 1895 and shortly thereafter, Anna Melby Higby (Mary's sister) passed away. In 1897, Mary married her brother in law WIlliam Milford Higby and together they raised 10 children. (Including Clarence "Griff" Higby, James Higby, Edward Higby and George Higby). After Wilford's death, James Kuhns went to live with the Cargo family (don't know how or why this happened? Not sure they are relatives?) and all of the Kuhns women went by the maiden name of Higby. I can't seem to be able to verify any of this information or go any further back than I have listed above. Apparently, Mr. Kuhns was an alcoholic and very abusive before his death and none of the family has very much to say about him. The Kuhns/Higby children (who were also cousins) stayed very close. Clarence's obituary reads that his parents were William Higby and Anna Melbey Higby and Minnie's obituary lists her parents as William and Mary Milby Higby (not wilford kuhns), If anyone can help with my search, I would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!
