The St. Julien, born in 1915. I found a letter that had been written to my Uncle - Max Melchers, back in the 1940's. He asked if they might be related.

However, I have no idea if my Uncle replied, or if we are related.

Contact me and we can compare.

Thank you - Kathy

I'm sorry about the Jacob Melcher. The best I know is that the youngest son of a German Baron left Germany with his wife and 8 children about 1796. Some tragedy occurred on the sea which left only two children as orphans. Lucy age 12 and Leonard, age 10. They were sold by the ship's captain as indentured servants. Lucy grew and married and moved to OHIO and dissapeared from our knowledge. Leonard(1787-1823) married a Rachel Stine.Their family located in the Centre Co. area of PA. Their children were Jonas (1813-1882) John (1815-1862) Leonard Jr. (1817-1899) Lucy(1819-)Rachel (1821-1886) and Mary (1823-)Thanks for your interest. Ken

You might check it out.

Keep me posted if you find the connection.

Thanks,
Linda Melcher Woodbury

Take a look at my charts and keep for future reference. Begin attempting to connect at Johannes Melcher and back.

It could be that you will eventually connect since there is a definite pattern of the early Melchers gathering in Ohio during the early to mid-1800's, then dispersing by family connection according to the German Family Pedigree to separate larger towns/cities along the Ohio River. It seems they might have maintained that large-scale plan so as to keep tabs on each other and better establish businesses.

Linda Melcher Woodbury

Hi Jacob,

I don't recognize the family names listed.

Do you have an residence area, approximate year span and age at a certain year of your oldest known Melcher relative? That would give us a clue of what direction to send you looking. The Melcher's settled certain distinctive areas according to where they fit into the Germany family pedigree.

Thanks,
Linda Melcher Woodbury

Here is what I can tell you about the christian association's of my Melcher Family.

Original family records were kept in Germany by Catholic Priests in their hometown village. When the German ancestors came to America and to the Louisville, KY area they attended, married and baptised their children in the Catholic Church. Early ancestors are buried in Catholic cemetaries. Family members changed their home church in the early 1850's and may have been involved in fighting for burial rights for the poor. Later members of the family have been buried in general population locations. Still, later generations removed to Southern Indiana and joined Lutheran denominations.

I have often wondered if the priest followed the family for their association with the bible king, Melchoir. I have never seriously searched it either way.

Keep us posted if you find anything!

Denise Melcher Goodale

He was married in Bellview IL to Amelia Medora Hamilton and lived there at least until 1880. He is there in the 1880 cencus and lists his parents as being born in Saxony. I loose him after that cencus. I found his wife in Wisconsin in the 1900 cencus but she has remarried. In 1900 his son, Frances Leander Melcher, is living in Wisconsin and lists his father as being born in Vermont.

Not sure if this is related, but we have a Maria Faust who married Dennis Melcher in New Albany, Indiana. Dennis was a Potter in Louisville, KY who married Maria and they moved to Iowa in the 1840's (Late or early 50's I'd have to look) If you think this is your line, I know a geneologist who's husband is from that line and she knows much more than me.

Denise

Gerhard Friedrich Melcher (born in Rabber, Hanover & died 14 July 1875 in Cleveland, OH) is my 3 Gr Grandfather.
Re: Descendents of Jacob Melcher

I'm curious if you have received any information on the ancestors of Jacob Melcher. My Melcher family history from Illinois includes my GGGF's (Leonard Jr. b.1817 in PA) half brother, John (b.1815 in PA). John's descendents came to Kansas, perhaps in the mid-1800's.

I have a photo of John's wife, Christena McMonigal Melcher, taken in a photo studio in Harper, Kansas. I have a photo of my GGGF, Leonard, Jr., taken in the same photo studio on probably the same day.

The half-brothers' father, Leonard, Sr., was one of two orphans whose parents and 8 siblings died at sea on the voyage from Germany. Lucy was 12 and Leonard (Sr) was 10.
They were sold as indentured servants to a Dr. Fanistock. Lucy married and moved to Ohio and nothing else is known about her.

Leonard, Sr. married Rachel Stine. Through the McMonigal family history, we have John's birthdate, 1815.
Apparently, Rachel died either in childbirth or shortly after, because in Leonard, Jr.'s family Bible (in my possession) he lists his mother's name as Cronister (no first name known). Leonard, Jr. was born in 1817.
He married Elizabeth Henderson in Centre, Co, PA, and their son, Samuel Bates Melcher, is my GGF.

McMonigals, Hendersons, and Melchers all lived in Centre Co. in the early 1800's.

My great curiosity comes from the fact that when people ask if I am related to some Melcher in Kansas, I always said no because I came from Illinois to Kansas in 1975. But now I wonder if any of them know the same story about the two orphans. That would mean we are definitely related way back in 1800.

Kent M. Melcher
Topeka, Kansas

This is all so old and I just started the Tree this year. Edith Melcher was my GGrandmother. My Grandmother who was married to Edith's Son Andrew Clyde Taylor just passed away this last Nov and she had all of Edith's scrapbooks. And Edith was into scrapbooks.
The Melchers in her family: Father: Gerhard Heinrich Melcher (Born: 1839), Mother, Regula Karolina Von Vaterlaus (Born: 1863), Mary Rachel Melcher (Born: 1890), Salina Ellen Melcher (Born: 1892), Ella Melcher (Born: 1892),Edith Meline Melcher (Born: 1895), Clara Louisa Melcher (Born: 1896)Henry John Melcher (Born: 1898),Marie Laura Melcher (Born: 1900), Emelia Melcher (Born: 1902), Margaret Gertrude Melcher (Born: 1907.
Literally hundreds of pictures of the Melchers from Ohio and Waterville Kansas. About a quarter labled. Most in very bad shape with a few outstanding exceptions. These scrap books have started both my husband and I in a new hobby (addition), photo restoration. I am getting them up as fast as family/job allows.
Would LOVE to talk to anyone interested in this line or just researching in general. I am a beginner but I am hooked!
