Soy la hija pequeña de mi padre y a mi, por lo tanto nunca me hablo de su vida en Cuba. Tengo la esperanza que tal vez alguien que lo conocio o conocio a la famila me pudiera compartir un poco de historia sobre ellos. Just a reminder- The civil registry will send you copies of papers (for free!) It helps to write in Spanish. Don't ask for more than two records at a time. I wrote to the priest twice. The second time I even sent a donation. No reply! Don't forget to send an international reply coupon for return postage. Everything is written in Castillian.

I have a Sabino Menendez married to Josepha Artimez in Oviedo, Astudias. They came to the US c1907 with their children. My grandfather was born there & the last born in Spain. I received documents on Sabino & Josepha's marriage in Spain with their parents' names. Also, one of their children (a Menendez) married a cousin (an Artimez). I think they were first cousins! Perhaps we have a connection.

My family is from Salinas and Aviles, Oviedo Spain and also have the surnames Menendez, Artimez, Lopez and Ovies. My gg-grandfather was Francisco Artimez married to Amalia Menendez. They had a son, Donato in 1888. Donato Married Florentina Verdin (b 1891) who's parents are Guillermo Verdin and Maria Artimez.

I got this information from my cousin who travelled back to Spain and researched extensively. The strange thing is 30 years ago I interviewed my Grandmother Florentina and she said her parents were Guillermo Ovies and Maria Verdin and her grandparents were Guillermo Verdin and Theresa Lopez. I also have written down that Florentina had 20 brothers and sisters(believe it or not), one of them is named Josephina or Jospeha.

She was very old when I interviewed her, so I do not know if her memory was bad or if she was giving one of the two spanish surnames. I was told her parents were 2nd or 3rd cousins and had similar last names. In addition, my grandparents were 4th cousins.

Do any of these names seem familiar? If so, maybe we can help each other out.

Though there were originally only 11 families with the last name Menendez, it is now an extremely common name in Asturias, literally thousands. I am sure we are not in any way related because I do not recognize the names you mention and I do know my aunts and uncles and my first cousins --in fact was in Spain this past August and spent most of the month with my family. Though my aunts and uncle are dead, most of my first cousins still live in Asturias within a 15 k radius of each other, including my cousin Manolo who still lives at the farm and in the very home where my father was born. We did find out that he was 4 years older than we had believed prior to this visit. I also visited the church where he was baptised and the cemetery where those aunts and uncles who died in an epidemic in the early 20th century are buried. Sorry. Many Asturianos migrated to Donora because the industry there is much like that of Asturias. Good luck in your search!

Se llamaba Constantino José María Menéndez Fernández, hijo de José Mdz. y María Fdz. Nació el 15 de IX, 1898. Tenía 4 hermanos; Genaro, Adela, Carmen y Aurora. My father, nicknamed Carreño, was born near Avilés, possibly either in Corvera or Tamón, Asturias, Spain, circa 1898. He emigrated to Canton, Ohio (south of which he had coal mines) via Danora, Pennsylvania, circa 1916. He died on 20 January 1952. I believe he entered through Key West. He had a brother Genaro and sisters Adela, Aurora and Carmen. He was the only sibling to emigrate to the United States. Carmen and her husband emigrated to Buenos Aires from Barcelona after the Civil War. Genaro died in the 1970's. My paternal family is still in Spain and I want to contact them. I know that I have a first cousin named María Luisa Menéndez de Fernández who in the 1970's was in Cornellana, Asturias. She and her husband Anibal Fernández Menéndez had a business: "Granja Avícola La Santina" in Cornellana. Another first cousin is Nieves Menéndez Rodríguez who lived in Arlos Llanera with her husband and 2 sons, Manuel Angel and Ruben; I believe they would now be 34 and 32 years old, respectively. The oldest grandson of my uncle Genaro is named José Manuel Menéndez Pérez. He would be about 46 years old now. The last known address for his family is: La Magdalena-El Barrial-Bco(?)-1-0, Avilés, Asturias. Any information regarding either my father or my relatives still living in Asturias would be gratefully accepted.

I was wondering if we are somehow related. My grandfather Donato Artimez (born 1888) is the son of Amalia Menendez and Francisco Artimez from Aviles, Asturias. He migrated to the USA in 1910 and settled in Donora, PA where he worked at some sort of metal forging plant. I have been looking for relatives in Spain who could possibly help me find more information on my g-grandparents.
