I am the great, great, great, great granddaughter of Johannes Christian Mangus (1 Mar 1755 Darmstadt, Witzenhausen, Hesse, Germany--23 Dec 1830, Back Creek, Botetourt, VA, now WV) and Ursula Hess. Johannes was one of those "Hessian" soldiers pressed into service against his will and captured that Christmas night. He spent the duration of the war working as a mason on his prison Carlisle Barracks, PA. I have a little more information; would like to compare notes.

Menges DNA Discussion Reminder

I moved the latest post of DNA discussion to the DNA Board which is where it should have been posted in the first place. This was covered in November in this post:

http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.menges/74/mb.ashx

Any new DNA posts will be deleted in lieu of being moved. Take the DNA discussion where it belongs. This Board & List is for the purpose of discussing the genealogy of the surname Menges.

Sherri Schaefer Bagby
Menges Admin
http://www.berlindog.com

DNA discussion

As the Admin for many Rootsweb Board & List surnames I have set some guidelines. In case any of you are new to Rootsweb it is common for Admins to do so.

My guidelines are not nearly as strict as some I have seen.

DNA discussion on the surname Boards & Lists is something that is off topic. Rootsweb has set up DNA discussion boards & lists.

The most recent board post on DNA will show as deleted for the link in the email or the archives, but in fact I did not delete it, but I moved it to the DNA announcements board.

In case you are not a List member or in case you didn't read the email that came when you joined the List, I will point you to the guidelines for all of the Boards & Lists that I Admin. You may read them at the following URL:

http://www.berlindog.com/rootsweb101.html

Much of that page is helpful hints and tips so that you may understand how the Boards work with the Lists, but the DNA section may be found near the bottom of that page.

It's not my goal to make anyone feel bad. It's my goal to keep the discussion of the surname Menges on topic which is what this board was created for.

Sherri Schaefer Bagby
Menges Admin

Joseph Menges was born in 1830 in Jackson Township, York Co., Penn., son of Daniel and Elizabeth (Bullinger) Menges, of York County. His grandfather was a native of York County, Penn., and owned three fine farms in the county, but retired from active life several years before his death, in 1839, at the age of seventy-four years. The father, Daniel, was brought up on the farm, and in 1841 he removed from Adams County, and purchased 170 acres of improved land, and forty acres of woodland. He had a family of five children: Joseph, Henry, Susannah, Emanuel and Franklin. Joseph Menges went to Adams County with his parents in 1841, when only eleven years old, and worked on the farm until he was twenty-five years old. In 1855 he removed to York County, where he now resides, and possesses about 105 acres of finely cultivated land, and twenty acres of woodland, the greater part of which he made by his own industry and economical habits. Like all the Menges family, he belongs to the Lutheran Church, of Adams County. In 1855 he was married to Elizabeth Coulson, daughter of William Coulson, of Adams County. They have five children: Sadie, Mary, Alice, Marshie and Josie. Mr. Menges takes an active part in school and township affairs.

Taken from the book, “History of York County, Illustrated 1886” by John Gibson, Historical Editor

She leaves her husband and five children, Lee, Vera, Hazel, Edward, and Estella Menges; two brothers Frank Lee, special police officer at Allegeheny police station, and Edward Lee, general manager of the Lutz and Schramm company, and two sisters, Carrie Lee and Mrs. Grace Laughlin, all of the North Side."

Edward Lee was my GGG grandfather. I know nothing about his siblings. If anyone can help to expand my tree I would be forever grateful. I have preserved the clippings to digital file if interested.

I'm sorry, but this is another William Mangus than the one I'm familiar with. I got so excited thinking I had made a connection, I didn't check the birthdates. The William I am interested in had Uriah Mangus and Hannah Bittinger Mangus for parents. If you have info on this William, I'd love to hear from you at lhoover2@wvu.edu. Thank you.
I would love to hear from anyone of this family. William was my paternal grandmother's uncle. I have info (including some pictures) of the other siblings, but not much on William and Olive Sines Manges. I would be glad to share what I have on the other siblings. Awaiting your reply, hopefully you have pictures of William that you would be willing to share.

Have you found any of the other lines since your post? Would like to correspond re: Johann Adam Menges b. 1730. His daughter Mary Elizabeth Menges m. John German, 2 Feb 1779; other info I have says Peter Garman, but I don't know if they are one and the same; however I have John German, John German Junior, Michael Carstetter & wife's Release to Jacob and John Menges which states his 1st wife Elizabeth Menges was the daughter of Adam Menges. Do you have Adam's will, military records etc.? Any other Information? Do you know if Adam's Father was Jacob Menges? Any thing you think might be helpful, I am planning a trip to Salt Lake next month.

juneaa@charter.net
A Corresponding Menges List

I have just become the Administrator of the Menges Board and I requested and was granted a corresponding Menges List.

If you are researching the Menges surname, or other variations of the spelling, such as Mingus, Mengus, Mangus, etc., I encourage you to join the Menges List.

There is no fee to join the List and it's most beneficial. Anytime there is a post made on the Menges Board, if you are a Lister, you'll receive an automatically triggered email of the posting.

The subject title will come with [MENGES] at the beginning, so even if you don't recognize the email address of the sender, you'll know it's not spam mail, and you can feel safe opening it because no attachments can come via a Rootsweb email.

If you have any questions or concerns about the Menges List or Board, feel free to email me at:

Berlindog@aol.com.

Sherri
http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/b/a/g/Sherri-Bagby

Calvin & Rosanna Mingus - grave marker

This message in to inform you that a photo of the grave marker of Calvin Mingus and his wife Rosanna "Rose" A. Shipley [Mingus] has been posted on the Menges Board.

For the List members: To view the photo, you must go to the URL given near the top of the email, underneath the message about the gateway.

They are buried in the Nye Cemetery in Chauncey, Ohio, in Athens County.

The marker to the right of the headstone was erected by the Daughters of the Union in memory of Calvin Mingus' service in the Civil War.

Some researchers believe that the surname of Shipley was originally spell Shifsley and was Americanized after immigration. The ones who carried this surname who were related to Rose have Shipley on their grave markers and I have not been able to confirm that by documentation.

Oddly enough, this cemetery is in plain view from the former backyard of my Grandmother, now deceased, Garnet Marie Leake [Blower] and I was unaware of it's existence as a child.

Calvin and Rosanna Mingus were my G.G.G. Grandparents.

The original spelling of Mingus was MENGES.

They may be viewed in my reports online at:
http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/b/a/g/Sherri-Bagby

Sherri

As the Menges Board and List Admin, I have composed a document that is intended to be helpful in using the Menges Rootsweb Board and List.

It also contains the guidelines for the Menges Board and List.

I hope you find it informative. I have tried my best to explain when it's appropriate to use the Board for your posts vs the List and I've tried to impress upon you the importance of using the Board.

This is the URL where I have uploaded the page:

http://www.berlindog.com/rw101.htm

Sherri

Close match for Menges

I have recently been in contact with another researcher who has done extensive research on his wife's surname which was spelled Mingea.

He tells me the following about the surname Mingea:

"The Mingeas were an old James River family - descended from an old English family of Minge. You see Minge, Mingea, Minges, Mingy and Minger are all supposed to be from the same tree."

I find this quite interesting, especially given the info in my own Menges/Mingus report on http://www.berlindog.com which clearly shows a German lineage. However, the Minges spelling in particular is so close to Menges and Mingus.

I did not do that early research on the Mingus report. A distant cousin of mine did the early research and I realize there are flaws in the report. I'd love to correct the flaws.

At any rate, I found this match for Mingea with a question mark after the name on the following site:

http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/Arrivals/Canada1861.htm

To save time, hit Ctrl and f and a box will pop up. Type in Mingea and hit Find Next and your cursor will go to the name.

Has anyone else ever personally done a study on the origin of the surname Menges or Mingus?

Sherri
http://www.berlindog.com

Research site w/Menges matches

Using the following instructions, I just made a match for 85 items using the Menges name. Not everything is accurate on the matches, but this has got to be one of the most amazing sites. There are strict guidelines of the use of content so nothing can be posted on the Rootsweb Board.

Here is the URL and a few instructions for those of you who may not have seen this site before.

http://www.brooklynpubliclibrary.org/eagle/index.htm

When you pull that URL, click on:

It will take a bit for the next page, which opens another browser to load. When you get there, you'll see a tab at the top that says:

Keyword Search

Click on that tab. I left the default settings and in the box called:

Search Term

I typed in Menges. It will load some matches. You can click on the pics of the Newspaper icons and it will open a small browser so that you can read the entire article.

This is an amazing site. It's not just the content, it's the site itself that has me amazed. Hey...web design is my thing and I am just amazed. Did I mention I was amazed? lol..

A person could spend all day on that site, providing they were easily amused like me...lol...Enjoy !

Sherri
Menges Admin
http://www.berlindog.com
