i am marcus mercer, my grandfather was john thomas mercer, his father was john isaac mercer, his father was jonas monroe mercer, and his father was isaac mercer, who was either born in ohio or pennsylvaina, in 1815, many people say he was born in 1808 but according to census and his age at the time, it would make him be born in 1815. he had a brother named joseph mercer, they both moved to missouri around the late 1840's to anthonies mill missouri. That is as far back as i know. i am looking for people who would know anything about them, anything about this particular family who may have pictures, or just any kind of information for me. thanks
Looking the information on the Coleman branch of the my Hunt family line.
John Henry Clay Coleman, Jr. (b, 25 Jul 1881, Maryland) married Clara Ellen Mercer (daughter of James Mercer & Belle Missouri Hunt; b, 29 Mar 1885 Griggsville, IL) in Griggsville, IL 1906. John & Clara had the following children:
Joy Elizabeth b, 1910-1911. Married Frank Brokaw in Toledo, OH between 1930-1935.
Margery M. b, 1920-1921. Married Otis Carl Petty in Alton, IL
John in 1900 & 1910 is a glass blower in St. Louis & Alton, IL (respectively) which was the occupation of his father also. In 1920-1930 he is an insurance agent in Alton, IL.
John, Clara & family relocated from Alton, IL to Toledo, OH between 1930-1935.
If I have located the correct Joy E. (Coleman) Brokaw, she died in 2003 in Port Charlotte, FL.
I'm seeking the death dates for John & Clara (Mercer) Coleman. There is a John listed in the Ohio Death Index who is born in the correct year, but states birth was in England and that wife was Phoebe - this is the wrong John Henry Coleman for my line.
Also seeking any descendants of Frank & Joy Brokaw and Otis & Margery Petty who can help with this mystery.
Thank you,
Lori Z.

My mothers name is Victoria Barbara Jean Herald. Her mothers name is Rosetta Mercer and her fathers was Barney Herald. There was a brother named Thomas Herald. I dont know any other dates other than that. Not sure why but it has been a hush hush thing on the family line.
Job & Sarah Messer land in IA

I have a land grant document signed by President James Buchanan in 1859 granting 160 acres in Osage Iowa to Sarah Messer, widow of Private Jobe Messer who served with the PA Militia in the War of 1812. On the same document Sarah Messer assigned the land to Thomas Minteer.

I also have a hand written bill of sale written in Guernsey County, OH selling the same tract of land(however it is listed as Gegordo County, Iowa) for $250 to Robert J. Mintier from Thomas H. Mintier and wife Rebecca in 1858.

How the land was sold by Thomas H. Mintier in 1858 when it was given to him from Sarah Messer a year later, is a mystery.

In doing a bit of research, I am finding that Thomas H. Mintier and Robert J. Mintier are brothers. Robert J. Mintier is Robert Johnson Mintier that married 2nd my great grand Aunt Georgia Felicitie Jacquot and lived and died in Leavenworth KS. His first wife was Lucretia Ackley.

I am hoping to find out some information on this Messer family and to see if there is a connection in the Messer and Mintier families.

Mary Cook
Mercer in Wilkes Co. GA late 1780s

Based on a name clue, I am looking for a Mercer family
that could be the family of a grandmother without a maiden name in my family.

The Mercer family probably lived in Wilkes Co., specifically in late 1780s, but probably afterward also, at least for a time. The family would have been in VA c. 1772. They may have come through NC and, if so, may have
lived for a time in Guilford area, and may have come
to GA before Rockingham was founded, as some Guilford Co. families wound up in Wilkes Co. A daughter would have been
named Sarah - she was said to be b. VA 1772 (from a later census statement, if true). She married c. 1788-89 and lived in the new Elbert Co. Sarah's children were born 1791-1814; five known children (John, Elijah, Benjamin, Mary and Elizabeth). Her husband died in late 1822. She was in Henry Co. GA from 1830 census to 1850 and in Carroll Co. in 1860. Did not remarry. Sarah died in 1864.

The name clue is this - a granddaughter was named
Miriam Mercer _. I read about two Miriam Mercers in the same family, one died young and another was named Miriam.

Wondered if anyone knows a Sarah Mercer b. c. 1772 in
VA, whose parents also came from VA, possibly via NC? They
may have lived in the Elberton area - Broad River,
Falling Creek, etc. Have read Wilkes/Elbert records
all weekend. Associated names may be Holtzclaw, Long, Bell, Moseley, Patterson, Cook - Colbert - Reagan - all family in-laws or neighbors to Sarah.

Have read a lot of Mercer information, but nothing that fits well, and need the opinion of a "family insider."
THANK YOU
L.
James Mercer & wife Mary, Prescot, Lancashire, England, 1800s

James Mercer appears on the 1841 census for Prescot, Lancashire, England with his wife Mary and their children: Richard, Ellen, Elisabeth, Mary, Hannah and James. His occupation was Blacksmith. He must have died by 1851 because Mary is on the 1851 census as a widow and her son Richard is still unmarried and with her. My ancestor, Richard Mercer put down on his marriage certificate that his father was James Mercer.

Richard was born in approx. 1825-1830 in Prescot and married twice. First on May 12, 1851 at the parish church in Liverpool to Margaret Plumpton. Their children were Mary born about 1853, Ann born about 1857 (md Mr. Byron), and Ellen born about 1860 (md Mr. Heaton).

Richard md 2nd time to a widow: Mary Plumpton who had 2 children. Their children were: James b 1862, Margaret b 1864, Richard b 1866, Elizabeth b 1868 and Sarah b 1870.

I would like to make contact with descendants of James Mercer of Prescot or with ohters who are researching Mercer or Plumpton from Prescot area of Lancashire or know how I can get in touch with anyone conerning this family.

Contact me, Janet Isobelle Finney, directly at:
jifjc@primus.ca
OR
jif137@hotmail.com

Richard, the son of James Mercer, was born about 1825 to 1830 in Lancashire, England as far as I know. His mother's name may have been Mary. His father may have died by the 1851 census. He may be the Richard who appears with a James & Mary Mercer in Prescot on the 1841 census and the Richard who appeares with his widowed mother Mary Mercer on the 1851 census for Prescot.

He married May 12, 1851 (certificte says his father's name was James)at the parish church in Liverpool to Margaret Plumpton.

Their 3 children were:
Mary born about 1853 (my great grandmother - md John Finney),
Ann or Annie born about 1857 (md Tom Byron & had 1 son - Fred who had a daughter Barbara),
Ellen born about 1860 (md Richard Heaton and had 3? children: Margaret, Maud & Francis Ellen(Nellie) Heaton).

Richard's wife, Margaret, died about 1861-1862 and Richard remarried about 1862 to a widow: Mary Plumpton who had 2 children from previous? marriage?: Margaret Plumpton born about 1851 & James Plumpton born about 1857. Richard's second wife appears to have been dead by the time of the 1901 census.

The children of Richard & Mary were:
James Mercer b 1862?,
Margaret Mercer b 1864?,
Richard Mercer b 1866?, unmarried & with father on 1901 c
Elizabeth Mercer b 1868?,married & with father on 1901 c
Sarah Mercer b 1870?, unmarried & with father on 1901 c

All of these children of the 2 wives and Mary's children by first relationship appear to have been born in Prescot, Lancashire, England.

I would like to make contact with descendants of Richard Senior or his siblings .
Janet Isobelle Finney

Please contact me directly at
jifjc@primus.ca
OR at
jif137@hotmail.com
OR by mail C/O Richard Finney, 33 St. Louis Road, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R2M 3J4, Canada.

Edward Mercer. b. 1744. of Frederick/Berkeley Co. VA

I am looking to clarify lineage of Edward Mercer b. 1744 of VA. His DOB is based on the following from Chalkley's Scotch-Irish Settlement Vol. II, p. 102:

Noland vs. Margaret Cromwell--O. S. 86; N. S. 29--Bill, 25th November,1797. Orator, Thomas Noland of Berkeley. In 1772 Philip Noland got a warrant for land under Fairfax and in 1774 sold it to orator, brother of Philip. Philip and Catherine Noland depose in Madison County, Kentucky,
1799. Michael Altreith, aged 69 years, deposes 1798 Edward Mercer, aged 54 years, deposes 1798. John Mount, aged 39 years, deposes 1798.

Mercer researchers generally link this Edward to Edward Mercer d. 1763 Frederick Co. VA. I assume this is done because the son of Edward Mercer of Berkeley Co. d. 1781 is commonly reported as b. 1766 (I have seen one researcher state that this based on a Bible record but no specifics). However ....

The 1766 DOB for Edward s/o Edward d. 1781 appears to be incorrect since the 1772 Berkeley Co. VA Rent Rolls report an Edward Mercer Sr. and an Edward Mercer Jr. which would be Edward Mercer d. 1781 and his son (unless there is another set of Edward Mercers who mysteriously appear for the 1772 Berkeley Co. VA Rent Rolls and then disappear w/o a trace). Therefore, the son of Edward Mercer d. 1781 cannot be born in 1766 and also be named in the 1772 Rent Roll at age 6.

I am inclined to link Edward Mercer b. 1744 to Edward Mercer d. 1781 because the item from the Chalkley book refers to a Berkeley Co. VA matter, a 1744 DOB for Edward s/of Edward d. 1781 is consistent with the probable date of marriage for Edward d. 1781 and I am working through evidence which I think shows that Edward Mercer d. 1781 is the son of Edward Mercer d. 1763. Therefore, I am looking for any evidence that can refute any linkage between Edward Mercer b. 1744 and Edward Mercer d. 1781.

Your thoughts or comments will be greatly appreciated.

Nina,
According to the Kentucky tax list of 1800 there were several
Mercers who would have been old enough to be your John's father. On the same list
is a Caleb Mercer of Breckingridge Co dated 6/19/1800.
There is also a John Mercer in Shelby Co. listed 8/29/1800.
There are a total of 11 Mercers. You can count George out.
He didn't have any kids named John. He's my ancestor.

Good luck,
Sue
I am researching my Paternal gggrandmother's line. Her name was Salome Kate Mercer (Her married name). I do not know what her maiden name was? My grandmother thinks it was Smith. She was born in Pennsylvania, as well as her parents. She married Edward A.Mercer sometime around 1892 in I assume,. Nebraska (That is where her 1st 2 children were born) and then they moved to Oklahoma after 1892, (her 3rd child was born there in 1894).I do not know her maiden name , or her death date. My grandmother says she died in Oklahoma. There is also some family history that Salome was related in some way to the Hershey family of Pennsylvania.
