I hear from your Aunt Margie occasionally, and visited several times with cousin Lucille just before she died. I'm guessing I'm about Margie's age, and live in OKC. My father was Chester Glenn. I drive by the Noble farm on Post Oak road now and then. Still would love to have the docs you spoke of. Stay in touch.

Thank you for the information, it is the first comfirmation that I have had that connects our branch of the Maritts to North Carolina, my grand fathers father was Thomas Jefferson Maritt. so you can imagine how exciting this is to me. Sam # one has been a dead end for a long time. I had hoped to connect him to NC as Zachariah and two of his sisters have connections to the Piland family who came to Tennessee from NC. I have a copy of Zachariahs discharge from the Civil War, he served 6 months in Springfield, MO, and a copy of TJ Maritts marriage license, I would be happy to share these with you and any other information that I have. Thanks again.

Re: Maritt/Meritt ? family before 1765

Hi, Linda Taylor.
I believe the Sam Maritt who died in Marion co, TN is the son of James Merritt b. 1747 in Edgecomb co, NC, d. 20 May 1837, in Williamson Co, TN. His wife was Mary Scutchins. b. 1747 at Isle of Wright, VA, married 30 Jan 1768, at Edgecomb co, NC. She died In Halifax, NC. Many Maritt's in Oklahoma out of Ozark co, MO, descending from Zachariah Maritt (son of your b. 1809 Samuel) and Athelia Coffey's son, Thomas Jefferson Maritt. The first Sam you are referring to was indeed married to Barbara Wolfenbarger, on 20 Feb 1814 in Tennessee. There is an LDS record indicating a marriage of a Samuel Maritt to a Sarah Newyen, but can't confirm this is one of our Samuel Maritt's. One has to be careful when citing anything about a 'Samuel Maritt', as 'Samuel' is used by so many generations in the Maritt line. Hope this is helpful. Please use my data as clues, as I have not done a good job of organizing my sources.

Surname: Merritt

I have a not so well known Merritt story from the diary of my great aunt:
A wealthy farmer in Oklahoma {near Tulsa} a a full blood Cherokee indian woman gave birth to a son in 1905 they named him Jack.. he also had a sister. Their mother died of a fever when they were very young so their father went to france and married a french woman to raise them. They grew up in Tulsa Oklahoma.

I photos believed to be Jack, and one of his sister, another signed Grandmother Merritt possibly in her own pen.. this would be the french step-mother who also disaproved of Jack's first marriage that ended in divorce.

{my mother's mother was rejected by this woman... it's funny she too is from cherokee and french heritage.)

I would like to know more about Jack's father's family. I don't even know the man's name.. that would be a nice start.

If anyone can find anything on the cherokee mom that would also be great... as I am tracking my native heritage also.

Thanks... hope I have helped someone
