Frances Valentine Meriwether Hunter, age 98, of West Palm Beach, FL, passed away Wednesday, March 6, 2013 after a short illness in Hospice at Good Samaritan Hospital. Frances was born on July 7, 1914 to Frank and Nannie Meriwether in Gantt, Alabama. Because of her father's work with the Bureau of Mines and the U.S. Public Health Service, she lived in many places in her youth; including Oklahoma and New Orleans. She graduated from Huntington College in 1934. Her father's Army career led him to Europe in the 1930's; to Norway and later to Germany, where Frances met Canadian Robert Hunter, her future husband. She married Robert in September of 1938; he became an American in 1943. They lived in West Palm Beach, Atlanta, Jacksonville, Coral Gables and Chicago before returning to West Palm Beach. Along the way she became fascinated by tropical horticulture and spent many years growing Begonias, Orchids, Bromeliads and Daylilies, as well as other garden plants. She was active for many years in the West Palm Beach Garden Club and was among the founders of the South Florida Horticulture Society and for many years helped produce The Palm Beach Tropical Flower & Garden Show in which she took great pride and loved to participate. Frances is survived by her son, Robert, daughter-in-law, Maria, granddaughter, Anne-Marie, and son, Nicholas. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edmund Robert Hunter and her sister, Rosemond Meriwether.
