Hello Delores,
Hope you get this reply to your long-ago message. There are a lot of Brandners buried in Saint Andrews Cemetery, Zeeland, McIntosh County, North Dakota, and information about them at www.FindAGrave.com. My maternal grandfather was Christian Brandner, 1870-c.1928. If you have trouble accessing the info., enter Christian J. Brandner, memorial#31250066&. Let me know how it's going. -John
I am researching Adam Merkel of Philadelphia (having migrated from Baden)and whose widow Catharina and their daughter, Louisa Merkel(dob Dec 20, 1834), moved to St. Louis after his death. His widow married Charles Wetzel in St. Louis. The daughter, Louisa, married Christian Ritter of St. Louis and they moved to Columbia, Ill. Since that is so close to the Illinois area you are inquiring about, I wondered if there can be a connection to George Merkel and Adam Merkel. What do you think?

Your post from nine years ago mentions that you went to Haguenau. I currently live in Stuttgart, Germany. I am tracking down a great great grandfather who lived in Haguenau in 1912. I plan to toss my kids in the car and drive to Haguenau for the day to do a bit of research. Wondering if you remember the best places to locate old records in Haguenau? Seeing as how I'll have the kids and I'll be in town for just a few hours, I'd like to make good use of my time. I haven't had any replies from their tourism office. Must be that my rusty highschool French is unimpressive. Thank you, Lara

I am researching my great grandfather, Johan Merkel (Merkiel). They settled in Gaylord, MI in 1874, but he died the following year in 1875 at the age of 30. My great grandmother Josepha Anna remarried in 1878. They were in the same area as a Jacob Merkel and his wife Josephine (Matelski. I am not sure if Johan and John were brothers or some how related to another Merkiel in the area. A William and Elizabeth Merkiel lived near them. Elizabeth and children were on the same ship that arrived in the New York in March of 1873. It seems that William and Jacob emmigrated in 1871, which would make sense, but I can't find any records to prove it.Margaret of MI

In the late 1880's and into the early 1900's, some of our family immigrated to the USA and Canada.

Death notice in the Oakland Tribune of November 28, 1907:

"MERKEL - In this city, Nov 25, 1907, George White Merkel, beloved husband of Ida Merkel and father of Earl Charles and Henrietta Merkel, and loving son of Mr. and Mrs. Sebastian Merkel and brother of Henry Merkel and Mrs. Caroline Pederson, a native of New York, aged 38 years, 11 months and 19 days.

Friends and acquaintances are respectfully invited to attend the funeral tomorrow, Friday, Nov. 29th at 10:30 a.m. from his late residence, 718 5th Street; thence to the German Evangelical Lutheran Church, southwest corner of 12th and Myrtle Streets, where services will be held, commencing at 11 a.m. Interment Mt. View Cemetery."

NOTE: Merkel was using an alias when he worked for the Oakland police department. He was shot 'on the job.' His reason for using an alias is not known, however it is known that his first wife divorced him for 'lack of support' and it is possible he was evading his responsibilities in that regard. There were several newspaper articles mentioning his kililing and the later discovery that he was using an alias.

Morton L. Montgomery, "Historical & Biographical Annals of Berks Co., PA.", (J.H. Beers Co., Chicago, 1909), Page 791. Mentions another Benjamin Merkel of Richmond Township, Berks County of a probable similar age to the Benjamin being discussed here. This one was a s/o Daniel Merkel and a grandson of George Merkel and Christina HIll.

Perhaps he is the one who married Hannah Adam and was the father of Esther?

Just to further confuse the issue, the 1850 census taken in Richmond Twp. also shows a Benjamin Merkel, age 53, wife Catharine, with children: Willoughby, Levi, Caroline, Catharine, Maria, Peter, Lydia, Isaac, & Lewis. (No Esther listed and also no George or William).. (???) Anyone know who this one is? I suppose it could well be the Benjamin that married Catharine Sheradin with sons George & William having moved into their own households.

Phil

I'm looking up the Reingardts, and run into the Merkels, Bretthauers, Leifeits, Bieritzes. etc.--all names of people I went to school with. They also seem to use the same first and middle names repeatedly!

Re: Merkel immigration to USA from Langenbrand Baden

Dear Elizabeth, this is a "better late than never" reply to your message, which I somehow completely missed until today. So sorry, but thanks for your reply. Since my posting I have learned that Fidelis Merkel did not, in fact, emigrate to the USA after all. Ambros, Augustine, and Johann Adam and families ended up in Richmond, Virginia (very unusual since this was just before the beginning of the American Civil War and most German immigrants were very anti-slavery and sympathetic to the north). My ancestor, Bernhard, lived in Celestine, Indiana and I have an extensive file on his ancestry which is posted on Rootsweb WorldConnect Family Trees. He was adopted by his sister and brother-in-law in Kuppenheim, whose surname was Walz, before he emigrated in 1840.

Re: Esther (Merkle) Haas Birthday Party 1899

Yes, Katie Drumheller (m. Samuel Lechner) is my grandmother. I have posted their old pix on the Dead Fred site www.deadfred.com. I have also posted photos of 3 of my 4 maternal great grandparents, I have no photo of Fannie (Haas) Lechner. I am from Berks Co., but haven't visited for decades. The southwest portion of Reading has been flooded in the recent storms in the northeast.

I have found an alternate ancestry for Hannah Adam (mother of Hannah Esther Merkel) at http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:838994... and links contained within, as well as other sites. This progresses backwards through the Hill family through Switzerland to Ulster, Ireland, ending up with individuals with the title "Sir". This contrasts with the one I posted going back to Pfalz, Bayern, Germany which I posted at http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/message/an/surnames.merkel... I don't see how both can be right. Here is the alternate ancestry.

------------------------------------
Hannah ADAM

Father: Peter ADAM b: 10 Oct 1765 in Windsor, Pennsylvania, Death: 1 Jul 1849
Mother: Maria Catherine HAUSKNECHT b: 10 Mar 1764
Married: 11 Mar 1788

GrandFather: Christian HAUSKNECHT b: 1710 in Germany
GrandMother: Anna Elizabeth HILL b: 1725 in Berks Co, Pa
Married: Bef. 1744 in Berks Cty, Pennsylvania

G-GrandFather: John Jacob, Sr. HILL b: 1698 in Switzerland, Death: 2 Nov 1774 in Berks Co, PA
G-GrandMother: Anne Elizabeth KERST

GG-GrandFather: John HILL b: 1668 in Ulster, Ireland

GGG-GrandFather: William HILL b: in Ulster "Hillsborough, Ireland
GGG-GrandMother: Mary TREVOR (daughter of Sir Marcus TREVOR)

GGGG-GrandFather: Arthur, Col. HILL b: 1601
GGGG-GrandMother: Mary PARSONS (daughter of Sir William PARSONS)

GGGGG-GrandFather: (Sir) Moyses HILL b: in England?
GGGGG-GrandMother: Alice MACDONNEL

Re: Merkel in Berks Co, PA

According to Morton Montgomery at
http://www.rootsweb.com/~paberks/books/montgomery/m11.html Benjamin Merkel married Catharine Sheradin and had 2 sons George and William, but Hannah Adam is not mentioned there.

According to http://history.tomadamsphoto.com/tree.htm Hannah Adam (b) Jun 23, 1792 (d) Jan 28, 1859 married Benjamin Merkel. This is consistent with the dates for Benjamin Merkel of b. Jun 6, 1794 Berks Co, PA, d, Jun 6, 1859, Berks Co, PA in the post to which I am replying.

The similarity of the birth and death dates for Hannah and Benjamin suggest either: 1) Benjamin divorced Hannah after Esther's birth, then married Catherine and had the 2 sons, or 2) Hannah and Catherine married different Benjamin Merkels.

Is the Benjamin Merkel b 6 Jun 1794, d 6 Jun 1859 the same as the one who appears in the 1850 census as living in Greenwich Township, Berks County, PA? Are we still confident that he and Hannah Adam are the parents of Esther (aka Hannah Esther) Merkel who married Nathan Haas? Does anyone know of a record which establishes this parental relationship?
Merkel in San Francisco, born 1870 New York, married to Rose A. McMann (McMahon) in San Francisco

Attempting to identify the male Merkel individual who married Rose A. McMann (McMahon) in San Francisco, CA in about 1887. Marriage ended in either death or divorce before 1900, when Rose married John McGrath.

One child of the Merkel/McMann union, Mary Alice Merkel, born 1888, went on to marry Edward Joseph Shea and later divorced.

Some census information suggests that Merkel MAY have been George Merkel, son of Sebastian and Leonore (Lena) Merkel.

Anyone with information on the identity of Merkel, please respond. Also please notify me if you are related to Mary Alice Merkel or her children. I am descended from Mary Alice Merkel and Edward Joseph Shea.
