I am researching the Merlin family name ,I have been doing so for the past 15 years. I beleive the Merlin's arrived from the town of Atsweiler in Saarland area near Sankt Wendel not very far from the German /French border line, on the ship Ann in 1750.As the childred of John George Merlin have indicated in the cences over the years that they are of German decent. I am interested in the Merlin family in Canada as well as the USA.

Deborah;

First a correction. Amanda Beck could not be Irish, so that has to be an error in the Census. It's not uncommon, I run into them all of the time. As you will see below, she could not be Irish because both of her parents were descended from German settlers in Nova Scotia. Again, the Catholic Church in Upper Prospect is the only Church that has ever existed in the village and it was very isolated in the 19th century. The Catholic Church of that era was really the only Church with missions along that shore. So, it was be Catholic, or be nothing.

I checked out the Nova Scotia archives yesterday and this is what I found.

George Merlin and Mary Amanda Beck were married on November 9, 1874 at Upper Prospect, Nova Scotia. Mary Amanda was the daughter of Jacob Beck (b. 1824) and Catherine Knickle. Both were born in Nova Scotia, so I'll have to do some more research on them. Jacob and Catherine had several children including:

Mary Amanda, b. December 12, 1854
Lilian Ellen, b. December 10, 1855
Mary Rossanna, b. January 15, 1857
Cecilia, b. April 16, 1860
Sophia Ann, b. May 4, 1862
John Henry, b. July 2, 1864
Michael, b. August 30, 1866
Clara, b. August 27, 1868
Joseph, b. Aprli 27, 1871
Martin Michael, b. December 6, 1873
Helena Cynthia, b. March 29, 1876

There is no telling how many lived to adulthood, but I would assume not all.

George Merlin was the son of John Daniel Merlin. John Daniel was was born September 1783 in Halifax County and died between 1851 - 1861 at Upper Prospect, Nova Scotia. His first wife was Abagail Bangs. His second wife was Amelia Emma Murphy. His children were as follows:

Children with Abagail Bangs were:

Henry, b. November 16, 1823
Jerome, b. July 20, 1826 (my ancestor)
Phillip, b. July 20, 1829
George, July 20, 1829

Children with Amelia Murphy were:

William, b. May 3, 1839
Margaret b. January 15, 1841
Joseph, b. December 23, 1843
Martin b. June 7, 1847
George, b. April 5, 1850 (your ancestor)
Abagail, b. March 6, 1855
Daniel, b. June 7, 1857

John Daniel Merlin was the son of John Philip Merlin. John Philip was born before 1750 in Hallwiler, Canton of Aargau, Switzerland. He died March 25, 1788 at Halifax, Nova Scotia. He married Barbara Hail on January 3, 1773 at Saint Paul's Anglican Church, Halifax, Halifax County. She was the daughter of Johannes Hail and Barbara Rosina.

Their children were:

George, b. November 21, 1773
John Philip, b. November 12, 1775
Henry, b. August 6, 1778
Elizabeth, b. August 20, 1780
John Daniel, b. September 1783 (your ancestor)

John Philip was the son of Hans George Merlin. Hans George Merlin was born about 1717 in Hallwiler, Canton of Aargau, Switzerland, and died April 16, 1787 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. His first wife Magdalena who died of typhoid during the winter of 1750/1 in Halifax. She is probably buried beneath the Old Dutch Church on Brunswick Street; though this is only a supposition on my part. Magdalena crossed from Europe with Hans George. George remarried on February 18, 1752 to Maria Magdalena Haas at St. Paul's Anglican, Halifax. She was the daughter of Bartel Haas and Margretha Haas. Maria was born in Kleinheubach, Germany, and died in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Upon her death, George married a third time to the widow Ursilla Pondever in August, 1764.

I have the children of Hans George Merlin and Magdalena as:

John Philip Merlin, b. before 1750, Halifax, Nova Scotia; d. March 25, 1788, Halifax, Nova Scotia. (your ancestor)

The children of Hans George Merlin and Maria Magdalena Haas were:

Sophia Elizabeth Merlin
Mary Dorothy Merlin
John Christopher Merlin

He had no children with Ursilla Pondever.

Colin.

This is indeed the ancestor of our Upper Prospect Merlins and he did come from Allweiler. With regard to German or Swiss, I believe he was German. Perhaps German Swiss. This comes from another persons' research and I have no reason to contest it. Please search this message board and you will find other postings and pictures I have made of the family. If you would like to e-mail me at colinkiley@hotmail.com I will send you my current research. I'm still working on it so I would prefer not to post it on a more public site. However, you are welcome to what I have.

I have a tract from a book called "Planters and Pioneers. Nova Scotia, 1749 to 1775--the person who sent me the tract in 1999 said the following entry is the first mention of Merlin in Nova Scotia: "Merlin, Hans Georg....Halifax; from Alweiler,(Germany) Ann(name of ship), 1750. d. 16 Apr. 1787, ae 69. m. Magdalena m. (2) 18 Feb. 1752, Maria Magdelena kaiser, bur. 14 Sept. 1763. m. (3) Aug. 1764 Ursula Pondever, widow. Ch: Phillip (2d) Sophia Elizabeth, Mary Dorothy, John Christopher, Jean Christopher." the sender added that Alweiler is located somewhere along the Rhine corridor,in present-day Germany, and that they arrived in Halifax on the vessel Ann. Would you know if these Merlins are the direct ancestors of my branch or were there others that arrived later from Switzerland? And thank you for sharing this information, as I have forwarded it to my brothers and my cousins.

Deborah Merlin Craig

Yes, I believe they were German-Swiss. The early Merlins in Nova Scotia also intermarried with German settlers in the Lunenburg area, so that would help explain the strength of the German culture in the family. For Amanda to be Catholic is not a suprise. The only church in Upper Prospect was, and still is, a Catholic church. I will get back to you with more information and I'll forward my research.

Thank you very much---it was always a puzzle to me why my grandfather was Catholic, but as Amanda was Irish and not Dutch as I had originally thought, there's my answer--I will study the Prospect genaological site, and pass this information to my brothers and my cousins. In researching the name of Merlin itself, it appears it can be French, English, German, Welsh or Breton. Perhaps they wer Frnch or German Swiss-- Thank you again.

Deborah Merlin Craig

I have found a William Merlin son of George and Amanda Merlin living in Upper Prospect in the 1891 Census. Amanda Beck is listed in the earlier 1871 Census of Upper Prospect as an Irish servant aged 18 living in the household of John and Ann Hearn. In the 1891 Census William's age is given as 6, which, in 19th century Census terms is close enough to your know birth year of 1887. My Great-Grandmother was Mary Catherine Merlin, of Upper Prospect. I believe she was a cousin of George Merlin, but I will have to check other sources. The Merlins, according to my research, are from Switzerland. I will check on George and Amanda from other sources and send you a reply in a few days. I live in Halifax so I have access to other sources. Check out the Prospect Genealogical website. It has a wealth of information on Prospect and the Merlins, and my family the Kiley/Kielys.
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~prospect/index.html
I am Deborah Merlin Craig, and my grandfather's name was also George William Merlin---he was born in Prospect, NS, in 1887, moved to Halifax, married my grandmother, Mary Ethel Hooper arond 1905---he was a tailor who relocated to Boston in 1925--my father was 2 years old at the time---My grandfather served in the Cape Breton higlanders and was the tailor for his regiment. He lived the rest of his life in Boston, and had ten children, 6 boys and 4 girls. I am Everett's daughter, and was born in Boston in 1953, and grew up in Wrentham and North Attleboro, MA. I am trying to determine the exact nationality of my grandfather's Merlin's branch--I do know that his mother was Amanda Beck, and that she was Dutch; my grandfather was also catholic. I have twenty-seven first cousins, mostly in Massachusetts, and even more second cousins. I also know my grandfather had two sisters, May and Grace, who remained in NS, and one brother, Gerald, who also remained in Canada. If anyone onsite is connected to this branch of the Merlins, I would be interested to hear from you and any other information you may have.

Debbie Merin Craig

Hi Gina! I see that you are from the Halifax area, and you have Marriotts in your family. By any chance do you know of a Sarah Jane Marriott? She was my great-great grandmother. Sarah was born around 1844 or so, and married Samuel Kemp(Kempt).Their kids were George, James, Cecelia, Florence, Emma, Clara, Helder, and my gr. grandfather, Samuel. My Kemps and Marriotts were all from Halifax, Nova Scotia. They attended the Church of England. Do you know of the church, or how I can get baptism or marraige records from the church or town? Thanks so much!

Clearly I am not a Merlin by name, but my Great-Grandmother was Joseph Merlin's sister. Her name was Mary Catherine Merlin. She was born on April 13, 1853, in Upper Prospect. She died in 1930. I have sent three pictures of Catherine (Merlin) Kiley. In one of the pictures she is standing in front of the Kiley homestead in Upper Prospect. It was built in about the 1840's. It still exists and looks very much unchanged.

The information comes from my Grandmother's notes. Her notes are from the 1920's and 30's. She would have been able to speak to my Great-Grandmother Catherine (Merlin) Kiley. She stated the Merlin's were Swiss. I will get back to you soonest with the particular location as soon as I check with the originator. All I can say is that the particular location was another person's research and I do not have permission to relate that, but I will ask if I can pass that on.

There is a great number of Merlin's looking for this link.

Looking for information on either a Charles Merlin or his wife Eliza Jane Smith (early 1800s??). They are alleged to have lived in St. Martins, New Brunswick (Canada) at some point but I cannot confirm this to date. May have lived somewhere in the USA at some point as well. He is my oldest known ancestor.

Eliza is thought to have moved to Canada directly from Ireland and her mother's maiden name was apparently Taylor.

Any potential information on either of these individuals would be greatly appreciated.

There was a George Merlin living at Upper Prospect, Nova Scotia in the 1891 Census. He is absent from the 1901 Census. Many people from Upper Prospect immigrated to the United States in that period. He is 40 yrs of age in the 1891 Census, and has a wife, Amanda (36) and 6 children. None named Sarah alas. They are; Amelia (15), Mary (13), James (11), Edward (9), William (6) and Annie (3). The Merlins of Upper Prospect are descended from John Merlin who arrived from Rotterdam on the Ann in 1751. He is actually Swiss, not German.

I have been on this site before, but I missed your e-mail. That's typical. My Great-Grandmother was Mary Catherine (Merlin) Kiely. Her Merlins were from Upper-Prospect, Halifax County. She was also descended from George Merlin and his wife Marguerite, or Magdaline according to my records. I have found out that George, or Hans George Merlin, married Magdaline Hawser at Saint Paul's Church in 1752. I wrote to Saint Paul's in Halifax and their wedding certificate is on record there. As you probably know Saint Paul's had only just been built in 1752. George was born in Hallwiler, Canton of Aargau, Switzerland in about 1717. Magdaline, or Marguerite was born in Kleinheubach, Germany. I do not know her date of birth. Her parents were Bartel and Margareta Hawser of Kleinheubach, Germany. Bartel was born about 1692 and died in 1753 in Halifax, so clearly that is where George and Magdaline met. To this I can add that George died on the 16th of April, 1787. Thanks for your information and, since I live in Halifax, I'll be sure to visit the Little Dutch Church soon. Ironically this is probably the only graveyard in Halifax that I haven't visited yet. I'm wondering if Bartel Hawser's death in 1753 was too early for him to be interred at the that church. I'll have to have a look. I also have a sizeable gedcom with my research on this part of my family tree you are welcome to it.

Dear Noreen,

The information I have (but not varified) does list Tumith and Thumith, as a varient on the original spelling of Toomath/Tumath. Through all these years of research, I have found 14 different spellings of the name Toomath, but if you trace them back they all lead back to Ireland and are connected to the original spelling. The way I understand it as the family's left Ireland and/or Scotland looking for a better life, the spellings changed. The Original Spelling which goes back to 1720 in Ireland, was changed to Tumath in Scotland and Ireland, and Tumeth/Tumath in Australia and Tumith in New Zealand, Tumath in Canada, and Tumath in the USA. Just taking a glance at the info I have I have several Thumith's, but am unable to find your Ruth. There is a Kenward Thumith that might be able to help you out. I see if I can find his addy unfortunately I'm unable to find his addy, but will continue to look, and will send it onto you.
