I have several court records on Samuel who moved from Amhurst Co. to Botetourt County in 1798. Unfortunately
there is no info on John altho I have heard of him.
I have records showing one daughter and 4-5 sons in Botetourt County. My 3Xg-Grand-father was Samuel's son Daniel. I have records of his other sons..... George Washington, Daniel, (of course) and Samuel. I was
never able to follow a track for the youngest, James.
I have found mention of William who it appears was a full
brother to Narcissus.
Information printed in a 'historic book' tells some of
the family history and covers the younger sons, mentioned
above.

You might look at Revised Merritt Records pp 142 and 143 which has 3 William E Merritts but Douglas never connected them to our Greenwich Clan though they probably are. You might visit Lindehurst the estate of George Merritt's overlooking the Hudson and now a national park. He and other family are also in Sleepy Hollow. One of the Wm Es was the son of Daniel and Charity and the other of Abram and Fannie, married Caroline and had Charles Avery Merritt for a son. Joe Merritt

Wiley Merritt Sampson/Duplin Co, NC

I am looking for more information on this man. In my quest to find the parents of my 3rd great-grandfather, Jonathan Merritt, I found a Wiley Merritt in census records living near the same families in the Sampson/Duplin Co, NC area and in Thomas Co, GA (and some of them have known ties to my 3rd great-grandfather). After the 1840 census, he disappears and Jonathan Merritt is listed in the 1850 census as living near the same people. I am thinking that Wiley could be his father but I need proof. If anyone has any further information on him, please let me know. I am also interested to see if he shows up the book The Merritts of Sampson and Duplin Counties, North Carolina. If anyone has access to this book and wouldn't mind doing a look-up, I would really appreciate it!!

I have a William Edgar Merritt 1817-1898 my great, great grandfather. He may have had some roots in Greenwich, I don't know. I do know that he is buried in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery though and the dates are accurate. I'm not real sure of the lineage back from him. I do believe that dna shows everything to be connected back to Thomas SR and Thomas though. We're going to be in the Tarrytown area late in April and early May.

Obit of Lester Merrill Merritt

Lester Merritt was a grandson of Wilbur Jerome Merritt and a great grandson of Jerome Merritt, famous in the early day iron ore industry of Duluth, Minn; the "Seven Iron Men".

"Lester Merritt, 85, went to join his Heavenly Father on March 26th, 2013. He resided in Star, Idaho with his wife Shar Merritt.

Lester Merrill Merritt was born in Townsend, MT to Lessie and Ira Merritt on January 9, 1928. The family moved to Duwamish, Washington after his parents divorced. Les temporarily lived with his brother Ira J while attending school. His brothers, Ira J and Sylvan enlisted in the military. Les enlisted shortly after beginning his military career in the Merchant Marines at 16 years of age. He was a chief cook and baker. As a Marine, he served in WWII and the Korean Conflict. He served from 1945 to 1951. Les was very proud to serve his country. While on furlough , his brothers met the Campobasso sisters and fell in love. They resided in Republic Washington. When Les returned, he followed them to this remote mining and logging town. Les was very involved in the Toastmasters, he was the president of the Chamber of Commerce, he worked with his brothers in stock car racing, and was the Chairman of the Democratic Party of Spokane County. He ran for the House of representatives for the state of Washington. This was the start of his love for politics and his strong Democratic ties.

Les married Clarabelle Purdy and from this union had six children. That marriage ended and he moved to Boise, Idaho. He married Marion Edge. That marriage also ended. His last love of 38 years of marriage to Shar Merritt brought three more daughters from her previous marriage to the family.

Les was well known for starting Merritt’s Country Café with his wife Shar and children. In his previous years, Les also sold insurance and real estate. His greatest joy came when he began to train and run race horses at Les Bois Park. This lead to many racing adventures spanning from California to Iowa. This was one of his true loves.

Les was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Kay Hoxsey and Mary Lou Merritt, brothers Sylvan , Everett, and Ira J., and grandson Timothy.

He is survived by his wife Shar Merritt, Mark Merritt (Karen), Lonnie Merritt (Kathy), Mary Lou Merritt, Loni Ellis (Mark), George Merritt (Becky), Cami Jones (Mark), Laurie Harvey (Gary), Kay Merritt, and Wendy Merritt. He is also survived by his brother Cash Merritt (Roxanne), 24 grandchildren and 48 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be Monday, April 1st , 2013 at 1:00 P.M. Funeral arrangements will be under the direction of Alden-Waggoner Funeral Chapel located at 5400 Fairview Ave. Boise, Idaho.
Polly Mary Merritt/Eli Barnes

I am looking for any information onf Polly Mary Merritt (1771-1848), who married Eli Barnes (1768-1845) in July 1789 in Hardwick, Massachusetts. The only references I have been able to find on her is their marriage announcement, her death in Hardwick in 1848, and a reference to a "Benjamin, of Ware, m. Sarah Wheelock" next to her name in a book about the history or Hardwick, MA - Benjamin may be a brother of hers, based on how it's listed in the registry. I'm not sure.

She is listed as "Polly" under the marriage information but "Mary" in her death notice/tombstone. I have found that Polly can be either a given name or a nickname - in this case, it may be a nickname.

This Barnes line is the one descended from Thomas Barnes and Abigail Goodenow of Marlborough, Massachusetts.

If you have any information you would like to share, I would be very grateful.

David T. MERRITT Ulster Co, NY

Through a combination of deeds and census listings, I believe I have discovered the parents and of Nancy Jane MERRITT, b. abt. 1813 in Marlboro, Ulster Co., NY, married 1st John TAYLOR and 2nd James BURNSIDE. David T. MERRITT was born between 1880 and 1890 and died after 1854, possibly before 1858. In the 1850 census, his wife is Sarah. Nancy's siblings found so far are Asa MERRITT, marr. Harriet DECKER, Phebe MERRITT, marr. Richard Kinard SCOTT, and James C. MERRITT, married Louisa (Unknown). Phebe, James and Asa all lived at one time or another in Damascus, Wayne Co, PA and Asa later lived in Sullivan Co, NY. James returned to Marlboro. Nancy lived in Albany and Rensselaer Cos., NY.
Are any of these names familiar to anyone?

Farmer Gedney b ~1804 found with wife Sally b ~1814 in Fallsburgh Sullivan County in 1850 census with nephew John G Sweet. Wondering if that is Sarah/Sally's maiden name. In 1860 all three were in Scarsdale, Westchester County.
John G b 1841 was the son of John D Sweet and wife Margaret Furman. John D's parents were David and Leah. the 1860 Scarsdale Mortality Schedule listed the Sept 1859 death of Leah ... was she living with Gedney and Sarah?
Seems Gedney died before 1870.

Hello - I am related to a Merritt family that lived in what was then Harper's Ferry, Virginia in the early 1800's (very close to Frederick, MD. I haven't been able to conclusively connect this to the New Castle, DE Merritts but I think there is some relation there, migrating to Frederick-Harpers Ferry via Lancaster, PA with german immigrants. The family that I'm descended from split up - some moved to Cabel County West Virginia (on the Kentucky boarder) and my line moved to the Baltimore area in the late 1800s. I've also found a Merritt family in Cecil County, MD (again, not far from New Castle, DE). I haven't conclusively made a connection there, either.

I am searching for a SC Merritt also. Nathaniel born around 1807 and a possible brother Nowel born around 1809. The names of James, Edward, Samuel and Nathaniel keep appearing in our line, but the interesting thing about your post was that our line came to MS in the early 1840s so may have all left SC after 1830 but before 1840 census. I have been hitting a wall trying to find Nathaniel's parents, but he married another SC traveler in MS soon after arrival. She was Elmira Martin, daughter of Samuel Martin and Rebecca Fleming. The Merritt's and the Martin's both came first to Madison County, MS and then ended up in Perry County, MS. I am going to get my brother to do the DNA shortly, but will appreciate any help.
I've run into a dead end on our Merritt family tree and need some help. Last person found was Masten Merritt born 6 November 1783, died 17 March 1839. Married to Rachael Sherwood 1784-1864. They were married in 1828 in
Esopus, Ulster, NY where they lived for several years before moving to Buffalo NY where he passed away. They had six children, Elizabeth,Samuel,Nathan,George,William and Henry. The spelling of his name may have varied also. Masten may have been Maston and Merritt may have been Merrett.
Do you have biographical information on the names you listed? I am writing a Merritt Book. I am a descendant of Berten Merritt of Bradford and Clearfield County, PA. His bio is in the Clearfield County History book. George Merritt was his older brother and they had a partnership at one time.
Merritt Graves
email is merrittg@tds.net
