I have been trying to find information about
Jacob Merritt and his wife Sybil. I understand that
he was born in North Carolina and moved to Georgia
and evenutally to Alabama. My great grandfather was David Wright Merritt, born in 1832-4 and his brother Francis M
Merritt born in 1836. They lived in Abbeville Alabama. It is
my understanding that their were 10 children in the family.
Do you think you have any information about these merritts?
Is it possible that he, or his father, was a doctor? An 1823 estate sale in Dickson County lists a "Doctor Merritt" as having bought a "vial" for two cents. It seemed possible that he was the doctor of the deceased individual, and was buying back the vial from medicine that he had prescribed (speculation). The name as listed in the settlement documents was "Doctor Marrits."

If you are going to order his death certificate, you'll need the year of his death. (I'm not sure whether the Department will search within a range or not. You could email them and ask.)

I suggest contacting the Cumberland County Library to see whether they have an index of deaths or an index of obituaries from 1930 to 1960.

Here's their "Ask a Librarian" page:
http://www.clueslibs.org/services/ask.html

Also, there may be published indexes re: deaths...I'll see if I can find anything...

Thank you, you are right. I wasn't looking at the right page when I typed this. Jesse Sr. is who I am looking for, born in VA. His age acording to census records varries but should be born around 1869. I have found only one Jesse Merritt born in VA, near that time but his birth is 1862. I have no way to authenticate whether this is the same person with a bad reconning of years as time went on, or a different person all together.

Her father was Frederick Lipsius b. 1850 in Germany died 1913 in SD. Kathrine's mother was Bertha Kettleson (various spellings) b. 1865 in Germany and d. 1927 in Davenport IA. Kathrine married my grandfather James Melville Merritt in 1905 South Amana Marengo IA. I will look for a list of her brothers.
Does this info help? Kathy

Re: Willis J. Merritt married to Clarissa Mims

Jo: Since my last post, I did more research and it doesn't appear that Willis J. Merritt is the son of Benjamin Merritt & his 1st wife (Bowman) after all. In the 1840 census for Lauderdale, MS Benjamin appears with his family as follows: 1840 Census, Lauderdale, Mississippi dated 1 June 1840. 1 Male 40-50 (self); 3 females under 5 (Martha, Lucretia, Margaret); 1 female 5-10(?); 1 female 40-50 (1st wife-Bowman). There is no male listed. Also Willis does not appear with Benjamin & his 2nd wife Susannah/Susan (Coleman) on the 1850 census after Benj. moved to Alabama. It is obvious that Willis J. and Benjamin are related but Willis J. most likely married a brother or uncle of Benjamin. I located a Willis Merritt on the 1850 census in Sampson, NC where our Merritt line originates, with the head of household listed as Jno. Merritt. There are age discrepancies in Willis's birthdate varying between 1834 and 1839 in all the census records. He would fit with this family, but I need to do further research before we make any conclusions. I'll let you know if I come up with anything. In the meantime, it was interesting to see how Clarissa Mims ties into my husband's Mims lineage and other members of the Hall family. Carole Imes

Re: Willis J. Merritt married to Clarissa Mims

Based on common given names, dates & birth places, I believe that Willis J. Merritt was the son of Benjamin Merritt and Sarah Bowman but this is only speculation at this point and my research is still in progress. After Clarissa Mims died in 1868, Willis J. later married Ester (MNU) about 1869 in Louisiana. So far I located them on the 1870, 1880 and 1900 census records, but will check later today for other records. For more details, see my site on Rootsweb/World Connect:
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...

That is interesting, thank you for sharing. Did you find out what county in North or South Carolina that they lived in in the 1800's?

I wonder how he met Clarissa. The Mims were well off. They owned slaves and a plantation.

Please keep in touch.
Jo
Do you know anything about Samuel Merritt who was born in TN around 1809 and married Elizabeth Wolfenbarger? I have been told that Samuel was of Native American descent. He eventually moved to Ozark county Missouri. Samuel is my 4th great grandfather.I believe Samuel was born near Ocoee and Chestuee Tennessee.

Jane, his daughter and my 3rd great grandmother, was born there as well. She was born in 1837 near Ocoee and Chestuee as well.

Any information on the Merritt Cherokee connection would be very helpful.

Hi all -

My line of Merritts also has a Cherokee connection.

At the time my great grandparents were born (a bit before 1900), the connection supposedly comes out of my great grandmother's line of Bennetts. They lived in Kentucky up until about 1911ish, when she eloped with my great grandfather. Emmett Hezekiah Erwin Merritt, and Vera Violeta Slattery. I belive her line before the Slattery name were Bennetts, also of Kentucky.

They went to St. Louis, then logged up in Montana, eventually settled on a farm in Wisconsin.

Two DNA things might help you sort things out:

1] Find a living Merritt of your line, get his DNA test done, and see if his direct parternal line is Native American.

2] I know they also have tests that identify your overall genetic makeup. Personally not sure how they work, but if you took one, and it said you had Cherokee or not, it could be helpful. Might be a starting point for some interesting research. My cousin did this test, and we turn out to be mostly Iberian (curious as we had thought we were mostly English)

Anyway, hope that helps - Mike

outlndr@msn.com

James Smith Merrit was born 31 May 1896 and married my great aunt Elizabeth Marie Trimble on 7 May 1927. She was born on 28 Nov. 1900. His parents were James Smith Merritt Sr. and Gertrude R. Morris. Hers were Abraham Winegardner Trimble and Marie J. Cantrell.

As far as I can find they had two children: Patience born about 1936 and Anthony born about 1940. I have no information on the children. I know Elizabeth Merritt died May 1983 in Montgomery County PA. I do not know when James died.

Does anyone know this family? I am descended from Elizabeth's brother Francis Cantrell Trimble but would enjoy finding out more about Elizabeth and her family.

Thanks.

I am responding for my uncle, LeRoy Merritt, who passed away. Your LeRoy Merritt is probably not related to my uncle. His middle name was Lee and father was Orrin and mother Grace Arnold.

I am responding to your Feb 2002 information which was in response to a quire by LeRoy Merritt. LeRoy, my uncle, has sadly passed away and I am the custodian of the Merritt Genealogy. The picture you have found that was done in Chicago could possible be my ggrandfather who did go to Chicago in 1852 until about 1856. He would have been 21 -25 years old. I have a picture of him when he was in his 60's found at: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSmid=4...;.
I have no findings for a Holland Merritt. There is a Betsey Merritt born in Scituate, MA. in 1829 and married Joe Vinal, however their is no children listed in my uncle's search.

Hopes this helps and let me know about the picture. Get in touch with me at omerritt@atcyber.net

Also interesting is that this second census says that Matthew Estes was a farmer when in fact he was a physician who died in the yellow fever epidemic in Shreveport in 1873.

I have been trying to research the Lipsius/Pelzer/Albert/Blair tree on my husband's side- all who previously lived in Marengo, IA. I have not gotten very far yet. There is a Lipsius in Kalona, Ia that has been, also. I have a few pictures that where Aunt Olga Lipsius Johnson's. There are some that the name is spelled "Aunt Lease".There is a Jim Merritt living in Marengo- Is he related?
Later-
