Judy, My Great-Grandfather was Peter Mertes whose son Raymond Joseph was my Grandfather whose first son Raymond George is my father. My father lives north of Houston, and from a recent conversation with him, he still gets Christmas cards from your mother, his Aunt. I have just started researching my Mertes heritage as I may be moving to Germany/Austria and may be able to re-connect some lines while there. I am looking for any information regarding Peter and his children and would be happy to help anyone get caught up on mine and my father's line!

-Patrick Raymond Mertes

Susan, If you read through the posts by Janice Williams, Dianne Conroy, Mary Ann Merkt and others, I think you will find your answers. These ladies and others seem to have tied together a lot of loose ends in the Fond du Loc area, (Josephs and Niks too). I know my Nik came around the same time, but I can't seem to discover the niche that he might fit into. I'm guessing that my answer will come when I get back one generation (if I ever get there). My Nik ended up in Neosho in Dodge Co, Rubicon Twp., certainly not far away in time or place from the three brothers they mention.

Joe's mother remarried after Nicklas died of influenza. Joe says his mother never talked about his father, so he doesn't have much information about his family.

Janice My ggg-grandfather was Anton Mertes. The only info we have is from an Uncle who didn't get everything right, but your info is so close I believe they may be connected. The info I have is that Anton was born 1804 in Gilbayern, died 8 April 1888 and married Anna Marie Schmitz. The only child I know about is Gertrude born abt. 1830 and married to Peter Gesellchen. She lived in Fond du Lac and is buried in Mt Calvary. If you believe we can connect please contact me. Thanks Andrea Bock 72323.2424@compuserve.com

Looking for info. re: my great grandparents. Aegidius was born in 1854, Louisa in 1856, they came from Germany but I don't know when, or if they had already married in Germany.
They had one son born in Chicago, Hubert Sebastian-baptised as Sebastian Hubert in 1893. He married Marie Schmitt - they had two sons Hubert, and Charles.
I have found tons of Mertes families all with the same 3 names of Aegidius, Sebastian, and Hubert - but can't find any connections.

I'd appreciate any info. someone might have.

Julie

I know very little about past generations of my family and would like to see if anyone out there has further information.

My grandfather is Gerald Eugene Mertes b. Aug 31, 1933 He married Rose Gonzalez and they had 9 children
My g.grandfather is Charles Mertes who married Florence Mertes (I believe this was the second marriage, but have no information about the first wife who I believe is my grandfather's biological mother)

Anyone have further information about the chicago area Mertes family?

I have this information from my research of the immigrant Nicholas Mertes (born 1804).
One of Nicholas and Eva Marie (Welter) Mertes’ children was John Gerhard/George Mertes (born about 1836) who married Elisabeth Brenneth/Brenecke at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Dotyville, Wisconsin on May 2, 1861. John Gerhard and Elisabeth Mertes had several children and baptized/christened a son Nicolas (born September 16, 1866) at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Dotyville, Wisconsin, on September 19, 1866. The 1880 United States census for the Town of Empire, Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin shows the family of John G. and “Betsy” Mertes including a son Nicholas, age 14.
Nicolas Mertes married “Katie/Kath. Michel” on July 24, 1900 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Dotyville. According to Fond du Lac County birth registrations (and as you indicate), Nick/Nicolas/Nicholas Mertes and Katy/Anna/Caroline Anna/Katherine Michel had several children including a son Joseph John Mertes born April 5, 1911.
John G. Mertes died January 10, 1913, in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. His obituary indicates his wife, six daughters, one son “Nicholas, of the town of Forest” and two sisters survived him.
Please email me directly to exchange additional information.

Mike, I checked the other messages. My Nicholas/Nicklas was born after 1875--too late for the other Nicholas to be the same.
Does anyone have a Mertes, born around 1870-1880 from Fon du Lac?
NIcholas' wife Katherine/Catherine/Kathryn was born in 1882 and died in 1968 in Wausau. They had eight children--from oldest to youngest--John (Jack), Elizabeth, Henry, Emmet, Laura, Joseph (my husband's grandfather), Phillip, and Catherine. When Katherine re-married she had two more children--Dorothy and Evelyn Peterson.

ANTON J. MERTES/WISC/CO

I am looking for the father of Anton J. Mertes (7/5/1862) and his siblings. His father's name was Jacob Mertes (1836-1896) married to Anna Maria Kraemer Mertes (1840-1905).
Jacob's parents were Anton Mertes (3/12/ 1804) and Anna M. Weber Mertes (1/14/1806). They were born in Germany on the Rhine, in the Regierungs Bezirk, Coblentz, Kreis Daun. The families settled in Fond du lac, Wisconsin and the nearby areas. The branch I am missing is the siblings of Jacob Mertes. If anyone has any information about the Mertes' of Wisconsin I would appreciate any lead. Thanks

Tony, thank you so much for responding to my post. Jacob Mertes (1836) was my Great Great Grandfather. My grandmother Rose M. Bates (1893), aka Anna Rose Mertes was the daughter of Anton J.Mertes (1862) and granddaughter of Jacob Mertes. Rose was married to John Henry 'Harry' Bates (1888), whose son Henry Arthur 'Harry'Bates (1916), was my father. I am an identical twin born in 1949 in California. I have information on the children of Jacob, but not his siblings. I have one picture of Jacob and Anton J. Mertes on donkey's in Colorado. Please contact me by email at jawwilliams@msn.com . I eagerly await your reply. Janice Williams

Hello Cousin, those are definitely my great grandparents. I am a little thrown off because I don't have Olive as a child of John Kolb (November 25, 1859). My records on the Mertes family are pretty extensive, but the Kolb side is very small. My cousin David, which I just received an email from, told me that you contacted him also. How exciting. Look forward to sharing information and photos. We have a tintype of Mary Anna Kolb when she was 2 years old.

Mary Ann, I think I have spoken with you before. It is encouraging that you are the first person to mention a Weber. My Anna M. Weber (Jan. 14, 1806 - March 3, 1865)according to my records was from Koblenz. Although, recently Ron Friedel informed me that Prussia in those days was a generic description for all of western Germany. I am starting to believe that we are all related in some way. With missing links sometimes it is hard to be sure. I know that within my family of Mertes, Kolb, Kraemer, Michels, and the Mullenback and Fond du Lac Mertes' married amongst each other (sisters & brothers married friends, etc.) My ggreat Uncle John Kolb was married to Anna Marie Mertes, daughter of Gerilarot Mertes and Sophia Linden. My ggreat grandfather Jacob Mertes was married to Anna Marie Kraemer. Two different families, I think, who knows they may have lived in neighboring towns. If anyone can shed some light on this subject, I would be more than happy to listen. I think you are related to Ron's family more than mine, but I don't know. Let me know what else you might have on the Weber's. Thanks
Janice Williams
