I am Mary Merton's great-grandaughter. My great grandfathers name was Lucius. His Three children were named Henry, Marion & Frederic. Frederic was my Grandfather. He had 7 children named Barbara, Janet, Frederic, Jr., Mary Jane, James, William & Robert. Robert was my father. My name is Bobi (short for Roberta). Rank and organization: Landsman, U.S. Navy. Birth: England. G.O. No.: 180, 10 October 1872. Citation: Landsman and member of Company D during the capture of the Korean forts, 9 and 10 June 1871, Merton was severely wounded in the arm while trying to force his way into the fort.

I am looing for the family of James and Marion Millar Merton. They had the following children:John Merton, Margaret Merton Anderson, Mary Merton Killmar, James Merton, Caroline Merton Shields, and Marion Argall. They pretty much grew up in the Calumet, Houghton Co., Michigan area.

At an antique show in Springfield OH I found an old cabinet card by a Lisbon, OH photographer with the following written on the back:

Dwight F Merton
Age Eight years
Oct 10th, 1896

I believe Dwight was the son of Thomas Merton and Frances Helman who were married in Columbiana Co Ohio. Thomas and his sons later mover to IL then to MA where Dwight died in 1976. Dwight's wife's name was Celia.

Certainly the same people. Go to GenesReunited, contact me again and I'll arrange foe you to see my Merton tree (sorry You'll need to be a full member. I am not connected with the site in any way other than to have my interests and tree posted there.). One point though, I think Twyross is in Leicestershire. Like you I can only go back to John Merton/Hannah Martin. Do you know when John Merton emigrated to Australia, and do you know anything about his wives other than Emma Segrave?

I am after any information on a John Merton.

The details I have are as follows:
John B. 1819 (Twycross/Oxford)
Married 1875 - Emma Segrave (Segreave)
D. 1907 (South Yarra/Melbourne)

From his first marriage (spouse unknown) he had two children
* Elizabeth Jane and
* Henry Edgar B. 1843

From his marriage to Emma he begat 8 children (which I have the details on)

I can also trace Emmas family back to a George Segrave and Rebecca Gearing.

In terms of John Merton I am also looking for details on his family - his father was also John Merton B. 1793 (Leicestershire) who married a Harriet Martin (Leicester).

If you have any further information it would be greatly appreciated - so I could try and fill in any gaps.

John Merton was from Twycross and emigrated to Australia, probably in the mid 1850s. He appears to have married three or four times there. The last time when he was about 56 to Emma Segrave who was just 18. He is said to have been married at least once before he left England. Any information about John Merton (also appears as John Segrave Merton before his marriage to Emma), or his father who was born about 1793 would be appreciated. Thank you.

Searching for any info on John Merton b. 1894 in Lucknow, Ontario Canada. At some point taken in by his uncle Arthur Mutton whose I believe lived in Mitchell, Ontario. Some time after ww1 he and my grandmother Lula Merton lived in Niagra Falls, New York. Also lived in Niagara Falls/ St. Catharines area of Ontario. On his ww1 Attestation Papers there is a ref to a Mrs A. Merton of London Ontario. Any info would be helpful. Thanks ......Dawn

Yes all of this is very familair, I think my mother, Gladys Merton Robbins, deceased now met Ralph at renioun in skytook or something like that oklahoma it's up by Tulsa. Did Ralph loose his speech ? The reason I'm asking is mom talked about meeting one of Grandpa's cousins , that lost his speech, and she liked him so much, she said how kind he was. My Grandpa was also named Earl Bert, Brother George and I think one was Leon he died before I met him, There was also a sister lived and died in Paris , Texas I can't recall her name right now. Excuse me for all the misspelled words and all. Just buried my oldest daughter age 44 wednesday march 13, sudden death ,really hard at this time lost my middle daughter in 1996 really sudden ,only have one daughter left I hope the Lord lets her stay until I'm gone she is my only one left. I am related to Ralph Merton b ok 1915, moved to Cal abt 1922 then to Oregon. He was son of Leon who had a brother Earl. Father Albert. does this sound fimiliar?

Thanks very much for your reply - we too did a spot of camping over the Christmas break. Margaret & I and our only sibling - son Dave and his wife Jan & their two wee boys Liam (6) & Zak (4) went to Gisborne for Christmas, then north around East Cape to Bay of Plenty. Had a great time.

Is there anyone out there that might be related to Hendrick Robert Merton Sr. Hendrick is originally from Surname, his father's name was Mateo Merton and his mother's name was Amanda Winter's. Hendrick, who was my grandfather, lived in Brooklyn NY after coming to this country. I'm not sure exactly when he came to this country, but I do know he was here starting 1939, until he passed away in the 1960's. If this sounds familiar to anyone please contact me. Ginger I can't seem to get the dates straight, on Leon borned in 1903 and his Father Dying in 1897,or did I read it right? My grandpa evidently was there first son Earl Bert Merton borned in 1802, in wheeler, Neb.and moved to Nowater area when he was a small boy, according to Obit.in paper when he passed in Nov 1958in Coffeyville, Kansas. buried in Robbins cemetary. He and my grandma Marguarette Waltrip were married in Wynona, Okla 5-17-1919 my mother was borned to them in May 16 1925 their 3rd child, I think because they lost a little girl about 2 yrs old and I don't really know what order she was, after moma they had 2 more children a dau Lou Alma and son Carl Wayne both is still living. Lou alma lives in C-ville and Carl in Tulsa. George passed away in skiatook { maybe not correct spelling} it's close to Nowater His wife 's name was Fronie. Leon was not mentioned in paper, maybe my grandma didn't know much about him, Carl told me recently that grandpa told him, He had a brother that drank a lot and got up in middle of the night and drank, carbolic acid and died from it. Have you heard this story?Have you heard of Maude a sister that lived in Paris Tex. I have a photo of her and her dau, grandpa and his oldest son Edward Lee Merton. My mother is a Merton. Her father was Leon G. Merton, born 20 Feb 1903 in Valparaiso Indiana. His father was Albert Merton died 18 Nov 1897 and Albert's wife was Jennie Gamble, born 4 Jun 1857, died 22 Oct 1937 in Susanville CA. Leon migrated to Oklahoma sometime before 23 Nov 1907. Their third son, George Merton was born in OK on that date. Jennie Gambles parents were John Gamble and Harriet Vaughn.

My grandmother was adopted by Elias V. Gamble, Your Jennie Gamble's brother. I would be very interested in finding out more about this family in hope I may find who my grandmothers real parents where. The family legend says it was Jennie Sprung, but have no proof. My grandma was Lillie Esther Gamble born Aug. 20, 1889. Conflicting reports of Norton, Norton Co. Kansas (SSI application) and Arkansas (verbal) They also had a nautural daughter Edith Maude Gamble.
