The page is divided in thirds, the parents and their birth, marriage and death dates and places and parents in the top third, remarks in the middle, and childrens' names, birthdates, sometimes occupations for the young men, and either their marriage information or their death dates in the lower portion.

I am trying to find more information regarding one or more Cornelius Merz's who lived in Nebraska.

I know that a Cornelius Merz was born July 1892 to Johann Albert Merz. Johann Albert was born to Samuel Merz and Maria Hunziker. Maria Hunziker is my great grand aunt. I list all of my genealogy on-line and additional information can be found on Cornelius at http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&...

I have found information on individuals named Cornelius Merz in Richardson County and in Platte County. Both appear as though they could be the same individual. The Cornelius Merz in Platte County was principal at St. John's Lutheran Church from 1919-1944.

Might anyone have any additional information regarding Cornelius Merz?

Tammy,
My Elizabeth Merz is the daughter of John (or Johann) Merz b. 1835 Austria and Margaretha Rabe (or Raab) b. July 31, 1837 Germany. Elizabeth was born in Queens, NY Oct 1871, lived and probably died in Queens. She married a Gottlieb Kohli about 1888. So your Elizabeth Merz is at least a generation older than mine. I do not know the names of John Merz' family, or whether any ended up in Sac Co, Ohio, so perhaps she is related, but at this point I could not say. Good luck with your search!
Mary Griffin

I noticed you mentioned an Elizabeth Merz in your posting. I am looking for information on an Elizabeth Merz who I believe Catherine Burkhardt Merz is her mother. The Elizabeth I am inquiring about also married Abia Tatman born in Ohio 8/25/1849 the son of James Tatman and Elizabeth Wolford. I believe he died in Sac County Iowa in 1927. Elizabeth and Abia had three children that I am aware of....Hannah married Joe Roeshall, Seymour born 1885 married Grace Fanning and Pearly married Tina Geisler. Would this be the same Elizabeth Merz? If not, would you have any information as I am at a standstill with this side of the family tree. Thank you so much.

The name MERZ and MERTZ.

Hello Merz researchers,
it is almost comical when it comes to our nice name
MERZ, since Germans pronounce the letter "Z" like
"TZ", after all, the name itself originated in Germany,
English-speakers automatically spell the name MERTZ.
Mind you, even in Germany we have both names
represented, often side by side, I remember working in
an office in Germany, next room over worked a
Fraeulein MERTZ, and she was quite fuzzy that her name
was not a four-letter word.
Talking about comical situations - I live in my apartment
building for about 7 years. This Spring we got a new
Superintendent. My out-of-town son with family came
visiting a few weeks back, and casually mentioned that
my name on the buzzer was changed to MERTZ. When
I called the Super why he changed the nameplate, he
answered, MERZ did not look right to him, the way I
pronounce my name it had to have a 'T' in it. He changed it
back very quick.
Now my son called me and he had a similar costly
experience, costly for the manufacturer of ball pens for
advertising. He buys $5 ball pens in 50 lots to present to
his customers, he just got his 3rd lot and was shocked
to see that they had his name as Norm MERTZ instead
of Norm MERZ. The manufacturer offered him a 50%
discount, but Norm did not go for it. He wants his name
spelled right. He had no problems with the first two lots,
why the third lot turned out that way is a mystery. Anyway,
they took the wrong one's back, probably using them for
free samples. If you get one, you know why :)
Cheers,
John Merz,
Hamilton, Canada.
Hello Julia,
since nobody has responded on this board to your query,
let me say this much - Fred - the short form for Frederick,
which is the English translation of the German name
Friedrich, which again the German short form for Friedrich
is FRITZ. Since your other data seems to fit, I would
pretty well think that this Fritz is your Fred, or the other
way around.
I know, I had an uncle named 'Fritz', his name was Friedrich.
Cheers,
John Helmut Merz, Hamilton, Canada.

Hello Cahterine,

Thanks very much for your help! I am going to see if I can either track down a marriage certificate or marriage register from the local LDS Family History Center for Frederick and Susanna's marriage. This should help pinpoint an age and street address for Frederick at the time of his marriage.

I am not related to the Merz family, however I am related to Frederick's wife Susanna Eva Mattern, who is the daughter of Susanna Wannemacher, who in turn is the daughter of Adam Wannemacher (1813-1887) and Philippina Held (1813-1896) who are my great, great, great grandparents.

Any potential descendants from the marriage of Frederick Merz and Susanna Eva Mattern would be distant cousins to me with Adam Wannemacher and Philippina Held being our common ancestors.

Frederick Merz from Gruibingen married Susanna Eva Mattern in New York City

Hello Everyone,

I am wondering if anyone sees any connections in their Merz family notes to the following Merz family?

I found a marriage record online for a certain Frederick Merz, and it indicated that he was born in Gruibuzen, Wurtemberg, Germany. I wonder if the town name is supposed to be spelled as Gruibingen. Frederick was the son of Johauns Mikhail Merz and Barbara Zankel.

On June 13, 1885 in New York City, Frederick married a certain Susanna Eva Mattern, daughter of Nicolaus Mattern and Susanna Wannemacher. Susanna Eva Mattern was born about 1868 in New York City.

The brothers and sisters of Susanna Eva Mattern include:

1. BARBARA MATTERN, b. Abt. 1854, New York.
2. HENRY MATTERN, b. Abt. 1855, New York.
3. CHRISTOPHER MATTERN, b. Abt. 1859, New York
4. LENA MATTERN, b. Abt. Dec 1859, New York.
5. MARY MATTERN, b. Abt. 1863, New York.
6. MARGARET MATTERN, b. Abt. 1867, New York.

Colin,

Gruibuzen is very likely Gruibingen in the Goeppingen district in what is today Baden-Wuerttemberg.

If you have not already checked on-line maps for other possibilities, you may want to try that. I use to use MSN maps before they changed how it works, but you can still use the old version. You can select the country you want to look for a town in. MSN will suggest alternative spellings if no exact match is found.

Another good source is Getty Thesaurus of Geographic Names - http://www.getty.edu/research/conducting_research/vocabulari...

You should also post a message on the Wuerttemberg message board here at Rootsweb. They can tell you if Gruibingen is correct.

Gruibingen has Merz families back to the early 1600's. I have Merz ancestors but no one that matches your Frederick.

Interestingly, I also have a Zanker from Gruibingen who married into the family. It is possible Zankel is actually Zanker.

Some information from the church records in Gruibingen is posted on Rootsweb - http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm/cgi?db=kbonnell

I used a researcher in Germany, but you may want to check out the information here for your Merz relatives.

Catherine Reuther
