By way of further clarification, my Miskel relative from Ireland was Michael Miskel (born abt 1825). He was married to a woman named Elizabeth. Elizabeth was also from Ireland but I do not know whether they married in Ireland or in the US. Michael and Elizabeth had five children--all born in the US-- Lawrence Aloysius (1860), James Joseph (1868), Eliza (1875), John (1878), and Edward (1878).

Is information available regarding Miskels that departed from Ireland around the time of the Irish Famine? I am informed that my Miskel ancesters arrived into the U.S. through the port in Baltimore, Maryland. Within a few years, they moved and settled in San Francisco, California.

I visited County Clare this past summer and was advised that Miskel (Mescall) was a name from Clare. I naively thought that I could just get information through the Clare Irish Heritage Center. It soon became clear that, without more information, the research would be prohibitively expensive.

The Mescall's were in Kilmaley resided in Kilcolumb, Furroor. The Tithe Applotments of 1826 identifies Lot Meskill and sons as occupying land. The sons could be Malachy and Lot.

Malachy Miskell married Catherine McMahon and had at least one son named Michael on January 21, 1831.

Lot Meskail married Mary McMahon in Kilmaley Church on Debruary 3, 1839.

Both Lot Maskill and Malcahi Meskill rented property in 1855 from Marquis of Conyngham.

The Meskels and the Mescall's are present in the 1901 and 1911 census.

So even in one parish in ireland there are six different variations on the name Mescall.

I have more on this family.

John Mayer
dundeemayer@comcast.net

The Mescalls of Toledo came directly to this area from Ireland in the late 1880s. I have scant information of their history in Ireland other than my great grandmother said she was born in Co. Cork and the family came to the U.S. when she was quite young. Her brother's military records indicate that he was born in Co. Clare.
Thanks for your interest,
Michael

Hi Michael,
I've only just come across your query. Judith & I have collaborated on a good deal of Kilrush Mescall research.
I reckon that your info is too close not to "match" with the details Judith gave you.
It was quite common in Ireland, at the time, to give a child the same name as an earlier sibling who had since died. This could have happened in your Mary's case. Your Mary's date of birth is likely to be on the Civil Register of Births. If you can give me the date of birth I should be able to look it up in a few weeks, when I get a bit of time.

John Quigley
Quigley Homepage
http://homepage.eircom.net/~johnbquigley/index.html

Family History of Quigley (Louth & Armagh), Cooney (Waterford & Wexford),
Mescall (Clare) (Maskell (Chicago & elsewhere in U.S.A.), Cullen
(Carlow & Kildare), Maher (Kildare), Hyland (Carlow) Sheppard
(Kilkenny & Laois) & Whelan (Dublin) Families

mailto:john.quigley@ifi.ie
mailto:johnbquigley@eircom.net

One of my ancestors is Simon Cain who was married to Ellen Mescel. They had their first child, Patrick, in Franklin Co., OH in 1852. They later lived in Clare, IA(named as such because of all the immigrants from Clare, IRELAND). I think Ellen had a sister Bridget. Ever hear of any of these people connected with yours?
