Hi I don't know if this helps but my family apparently originated from Cumbria my father being Frederick Messenger, his father was also Frederick Messenger married to a woman of the surname Wearmouth - family names that are popular and have been passed down are Hugh, Frederick and James

I'd love to be able to trace the Cumbrian element of the family maybe this rings some bells with you

Kind regards

Justin Messenger

Hi Dorothy
I see that your family research includes Messengers from Allonby, Cumberland. I don't have Isaac, but I do have Huddart, Richard, Gilbert and Henry who were born between 1819 and 1828. Their parents were Joseph and Ann. Could they be cousins of your Isaac perhaps? Have you managed to find out any more?
Look forward to hearing from you.
regards
Cathy

James Messenger

I am researching about a murder that was committed in Gaddesby in Leicestershire in 1843. The body of James Garner was found on farm land that was owned by James Messenger and James Garner worked as a farm labourer and lived in the house of James Messenger. The murder was in the Leicestershire newspapers and was in The Times newsapaper also. I have followed the reporting of the murder but it stops being reported before a conclusion is made as to who definatley was guilty. I would like to hear from anyone who may know anything about this or could advise me where to look for further information. The Assize courts would of dealt with this case but I can find no records surviving. James Messenger was suspected and put in prison for the murder, due to him being suspected as he was jealous of the attention his housekeeper paid to James Garner. Messenger I have found on the census after 1841 still on the farm until his retirement where he went to live in Rearsby where he died in 1886. Messenger was born in Sapcote. Messenger had a child by the housekeeper.

OBITUARY MESSENGER Rodman H. Sr. 1999 PennsylvaniaPhiladelphia

Inquirer, The ( PA ) - Sunday, August 15, 1999

RODMAN H. MESSENGER SR.

PACKAGING TECHNICIAN, 71 Rodman H. Messenger Sr., 71, a onetime plumber who worked on packaging technology, died of cancer Wednesday at his home in Elkins Park.

Mr. Messenger retired in 1997 after spending more than 45 years with area companies that packaged liquor, food, chemicals, and petroleum-based products.

He started as a plumber after graduating from Dobbins Technical High School in 1946. Five years later, he joined the former Publicker Co., producer of liquors and cordials, as a pipefitter and became interested in bottling machinery.

Mr. Messenger later moved to New Yorker Cheese Co., where he became plant manager and learned about packaging. During his career, Mr. Messenger helped to develop a heat-activated labeling machine.

Besides packaging machines, Mr. Messenger also was adept at repairing clocks, most notably the Grundy Tower Clock in downtown Bristol Borough, his family said.

He worked six months in the mid-1970s to restart and electrify the clock that had been silent for 20 years.

The clock's four 14-foot-diameter faces are visible throughout most of the borough.

Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Charlotte L. Carlson Messenger; sons Rodman H. Jr., Thomas and Carl; a brother; and eight grandchildren.

A viewing will be at 7 p.m. today at Mannal Funeral Home, 6925 Frankford Ave., where services will be at 10 a.m. tomorrow. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery , Norristown.
As it so happens, I do know where Thomas and Sarah (Barnes) Finch are buried. They are at Fouts Cemetery. Go down 15th Street in Ottawa, past Highland Cemetery on your right. Take the first right. Go over the bridge over I-35. Take the first left after the bridge (the road turns into gravel just before the turnoff). I haven't been there for a while, but I believe you have to cross one intersection before you get to the part of the road the cemetery is on. Fouts is on your left, about midway between intersections. There is a latch on the cemetery gate, but last time I tried it, you could get in just by opening the latch. A number of Finches are buried there. NOTE: The death year on Sarah's stone is probably wrong. It says 1886. I found a small item in a newspaper from 1885 saying that "Mr." Finch had died. I think this was a misprint for "Mrs." Finch.

You will find Jefferson Cleveland Finch at Ruhamah Cemetery near Rantoul, as well as a few other folks including two of Aunt Nettie's husbands (I believe she was also buried there when she died). Velma Finch, Jeff's daughter, is there I think. I don't have my info in front of me, but that's what I remember. Haven't been out there in years.

Hope this helps. If you have any other questions, just email me directly!

Alma

I usually do when I go to funerals to take pictures of relatives. I printed out your message to keep so I can find the Fouts Cemetery. I am always running to cemeteries as I am a volunteer in Franklin County on RAOGK, Random Acts of
Genealogy Kindness. I get requests all the time for gravestone pictures, that is all I do, no record lookups takes too much time for that. My husband says the only outings we have are finding dead people. :)

Lori,

Do you have any info on Sarah Keene's parents Jonathan and Amelia Powers Keene? Sarah is a sister to my g.g. grandfather Charles Keene. Jonathan is mentioned in the bio for James Messenger on Eaton Co. Genweb, and mentions that Jonathan was one of the first settlers in Eaton Co., coming from NY, but can't find much more on him and Amelia than where they are buried. Especially interested in his parents and Amelia's. Amelia lived with James and Sarah until her death.

Thanks,
Kathy Soukup

(Elmer b. approx 1895 in Michigan)

1910 William the father is listed as Willis rest of the family is the same.

1920 Elmer and Myrtle listed with son Ralph who was b. 1919/1920.

1930 Elmer and Mrytle listed with Ralph 10, Windell 8, Naomia A. 6 and Robert I 4.

You can at least get approximate birth years from the census.
Stephen, Blanche, Minnie Messenger and Rollin Baker

Hope someone out there can help.

Rollin Messenger, son of Stephen and Blanche, was adopted during 1881 while an infant by James Baker and given the Baker surname. The Messengers lived in Elgin, a small town in the southeastern part of Erie County, PA. Jim lived across the county line in Spartansburg.

There is no record of why the adoption nor the reason for Jim becoming the legal father. When the papers were signed, Stephen Messenger was in Chicago.

Rollin married Pearl Van Tassel and moved to Elkhart, Indiana. She died during 1910 and her body was returned to Pennsylvania. Rollin at the time was a fireman with the Lake Shore and Southern Michigan RR. In the 1910 census he is listed as living with father Stephen Messenger and his second wife Minnie.

I cannot find another account of Rollin. The Messengers are listed in the 1920 census as living in the northwestern corner of Indiana.
