Ok... I'm putting it out there. I've read all the posts and seen all the trees now. Half the family trees say our Metcalf's are from James Metcalf & Mary Claypool the other half from Norris & Jane Claypool. Mine says, "Norris Metcalf". James was the son of Mary "Polly" Norris. Which brings the Norris name into play.

Is it possible they are brothers that married that sisters or cousins even instead of the same person? Mary "Polly" Norris daughter of John & Mary Newman Norris.
Mary Norris
Spouse:John Metcalf
Father:John Norris
Birth:16 February 1718 in St. James Parish, Ann Arundel Co., MD
Death:1746
Marriage:6 August 1735 in St. James

But this put the family in Maryland. They had 3 known children; Anthony 1726-1813 - disputable, William 1845-1825, and James 1846-1842.

This leave a lot of gaps for more children and/or multiple marriages, etc. Anthony would have to have been from a first wife. Not "Polly" because they didn't marry until 1735 and John would have only been age 12 at the time of his birth or it's recorded wrong. See the problem? They were probably brothers instead of father & son. But it was the old days so who knows?

Can we track this?
