I know it's been a while, but I am amazed to find any reference to my great-grandmother, (Romelia Flora Metcalf - no "e" at the end, but that could have been dropped), of whom I've had such a hard time tracking a lineage. Oddly, I have her listed as having children the names of her siblings, if your list is correct. Wires may have been crossed here on my tree as well. It's been quite confusing! I think the names of your grandparents (my great-grandmother's parents, if I read this right?) might help, though! Thank you!

Laura

p.s. to all,
Any other leads would be GREATLY appreciated. I was beginning to feel like my great-grandmother just dropped out of the sky one day!

Eleanor Kirkpatrick nee Metcalfe b.1782 of Kent

Hello,

My ancestor Eleanor Metcalf b.1782 m. George Kirkpatrick in Middlesex 1806. They had at least 6 children:

- James b.1808
- William b.1809
- George b.1810
-John b.1814
- Katherine b.1816
- Eleanor b.1820

I believe they lived in Kent and Eleanor was buried in Keston, Kent.

I am looking for any information about Eleanors parents. One source I have found cites her father as Sir Thomas Theophilus Metcalfe, a prominent civil servant in India. However, I cannot find any records to suggest he had a daughter called Eleanor.

If anyone has any info at all abot Eleanor or relatives, please let me know.

Thanks for your reply to my query but there is no connection to the family I am looking for. My Metcalfe family come from Sheffield Yorkshire. One branch first migrated to Canada then moved to Maryland USA, the other branch that I am searching for now migrated straight to Connecticut. But thanks for your help anyway.

My Metcalfe line comes from William Howard from Rochdale, England. They lived in Savannah, Ga when most of them moved to the Maryland. Most were girls and only one son Charles. All of his children have passed and I don't think any Metcalfe's are alive.

Metcalfe Family New Britain Connecticut

I am looking for information on William (Harry) and Catherine (Kitty) Metcalfe or could be spelt Metcalf. Their children are Catherine, William, Robert, Howard and June. In the 1920 and 1930 USA census this family were living in New Britain, Hartford Connecticut. I have only been able to find this family on census' as it seems like it is not easy to search records for Connecticut. I do have copies of a couple of letters that Kitty wrote to my other cousins that lived in Maryland. The latest letter was written in 1944 and the family were living Winthrop St New Britain Connecticut. From what I can work out William is my Grandfather's cousin. From the 1930 census I know he came to the USA from Yorkshire England when he was 1, I found William on the 1910 census as a step son and I am pretty sure his parents are John and Clara Metcalfe. Clara's married name in the 1910 census is Middleton. William had a sister named Violet and a half brother named Alfred. Any help I can get would be grateful.
Marjorie's birth was registered in Darlington 1920, so I am assuming that John's birth must be around the same time - early 1900s.

Many thanks

Nicci

Re: A copy of the Metcalfe Book??

Does anyone own this? I have been contiplating buying it but with the price being around $100 Cdn - I would like to make sure its something I think it is.

Over on this side of the pond - we had people saying they had books on surnames (eg PETTINGER) and it turned out to be listings from the phone book and not much else. Scams basically.

I realize that this isn't the case here. But if I could have some one perhaps do a lookup for one of my names it would put my mind to rest and help me make my decision.

I have a RICHARD METCALFE (born about 1811) married to a JANE YEOMAN (born about 1811) married about 1831 +/- a few years. I believe he was born in . They had at least five children:
RICHARD BORN ABT 1831
CHRISTOPHER BORN ABT 1833
ISABELLA BORN OCT 25 1835, ASKRIGG
FRANCIS THOMAS BORN AUG 20 1837, ASKRIGG
SIBYL/SYBIL BORN 29 APRIL 1839, SKELGILL, LOWER ABBOTSIDE, ASKRIGG.
** Possibly another child of their is a Isabella Metcalfe born on 22 Nov 1829 in Arkengarthdale. Haven't validated.

Sybil married Christopher DUFFIELD on 26 Sept 1859, Chapel of Brearton, Knaresborough District, Yorkshire County.

I apologize if I am offending anyone that is not my intention. Just trying to just the cost. I have no qualms with buying books for genealogy.

Have a great day!

I was very interested to come across your message board exchange as I am trying to find out more about Georgwe Metcalfe, Merchant or Grocer of Spalding and where he came from. (He is my Great, Great, Great,Great Grand Father.)
A family tree drawn by one of his his Great Grandsons shows him as being born in 1736 and dying in 1813; a Canadian decendant has suggested that he was born in West Halton Lincolnshire in 1740 and died in Spalding 1st August 1813 with a second ranked possibility that he was born about 1735 in Everton, Nottinghamshire, which coincides with your reseach. She suggests that he was married on 15th February 1765 in Gainsborough Lincolnshire to Rebecca Morehouse born 9th August 1739 in Gainsborough( My Great Uncles chart shows this as 1740 which is close) and Rebecca's year of death as 1829. Your proposal that George might have apprenticed his nephew would make the Everton connection stronger than others have suggested. I would be interested in seeing any further information you have on his origins so that I can reseach further without duplicating efforts to much!

My g g grandfather Joseph Metcalfe was born in Bedale c 1811. He could well be the Joseph Metcalfe whose baptism is recorded in Bedale as "an illegitimate child" 1811, Bedale. His mother was Margaret and I am keen to obtain any information I can about her and her line.

What I have managed to establish thus far is:

1. She is a witness to his wedding to Ann Smith at Well, 1837 (Ripon Register), at which time his father is given as Joseph Metcalfe (husbandman)

2. She could be Margaret Metcalfe, "spurious child" born to Jane Metcalfe in 1795 and appearing in the register for Crakehall.

3 At the time of the 1841 census, when Joseph and Ann live in Little Fencote, a Jane Metcalfe, widow, aged 80, Margaret Metcalfe, daughter and William Metcalfe, son, are resident in neighbouring Great Fencote.

Can anyone firm up or rule out any of these tenuous connections or provide othe info?

I am the great grandson (maternal) of William. As you may already know, he was their eldest son and first legitimate child, Ann having had an illegitimate daughter Jane in 1835, who subsequently took the Metcalfe name.

Wm was b.1837 in Snape, where Ann came from, just three months after the wedding. He married Catherine Ruddy b 1863 in May 1886 and in September the same year they produced my grandfather Joseph. They had three more children, Mabel (1888), William 1891, and Catherine (1898). My grandfather also had 4 children, William, Peggy, John and my mother Mabel,( b. 1928)

Yep! I have done further research and am pretty sure that your George Metcalfe was brother of my John Metcalfe, Farmer of Gringley on the hill. They were both sons of George Metcalfe, Yeoman and were baptised in Everton - the next parish to Gringley. George Snr died in 1769 and his will states that sons George and Robert should have 'nothing, they being already provided for'. John inherited the land and went on to have a son , also John, who was indentured to Uncle George in Spalding.
I found the link because John had a grandson(my husbands g g grandfather) named Alfred Moorhouse Metcalfe - the name is the same as Rebecca's. Rebecca , George and family have a monument inside the church in Spalding apparently and founded quite a dynasty of Judges and Lawyers in the East of England.
Aha! Did your George die in Everton around 1769? Nottinghamshire Archives have found a will of George Metcalfe Yeoman written 1766 and proved 1769. If this will is for the correct George - I am hoping that my John (Framer) and your George (grocer) are brothers. That would be why John jnr went as an apprentice to his UNCLE George in Spalding.

Yep - I have the same info with the exception of the burial record for George. I think that my John (snr)died 1813 in Everton whilst his brother George moved to Spalding and died there. I also have a George Metcalfe married Anna Drew Everton April 1697 - he could well be the father.
Think I will order the copy wills if they are not too expensive. The Archives are a bit vague on charges.

I have a John Metcalfe in my tree - son of John Metcalfe farmer of Gringley, Gainsborough who went under indenture to George Metcalfe grocer of Spalding 1787. I have found George and his family. He married Rebecca Morehouse and they gave rise to several Morehouse Metcalfe names. John ended up in Tickhill married to Fanny Eyre and they had 2 children John and Fanny. I need to connect John and George the farmer and grocer. Think they are both mine but can't find the link yet.
Hi I am new to Ancestry so you may have found all info you needed by now! My Grandfather was James William Weightman born 1869 in South Shields, Durham. His father and mother were Robert Carr Weightman (born 1844)and Ann Splifford (born1848). I believe their other children were George (b1872)/Robert (b1875) and Fred (b1877) - there may have been others? James, my Grandfather, married (Mary Jane Douglass b1872) in Castletown, Sunderland in 1890. They had 12 children, one of whom was my mother Caroline(b1904). Her other siblings were James Robert/Abram Harley/George Splifford/Grace/(Joseph/Edward/John William - all died v young)/Henry/Ruth and Albert (killed in active service in Germany) - all born between 1891 and 1917.
