Hi Cheryl,

You are almost correct. The Debbie Metro in your message was not the daughter of John and Patricia. John and Patricia had divorced and John had married Gladys. Debbie is their adopted daughter. The two sons of John and Pat are Scott and Mike, as you said. They were their only children together. I'm Mike. I barely remember you and your brother. Your father ,Ted as I knew him, lived with my dad and Gladys at the time he died.

In reponse to the origin of the name Metro: My last name, Metro, had originally been Mitro. It was changed to Metro around the 1920's for reasons unknown to me as the Mitro family had been in this country for at least 35 years by the 1920's, moving from Pennsylvania to Minnesota in 1900. I've started tracing ithe name back and believe the Mitro of my family came from Slovakia. Both the names Metro and Mitro come from a few different countries, mainly Hungary and the former Chechoslovakia areas.

Re: Metras or Metraw - coat of arms

I found today at my father's house a certificate of authenticity from the "Sanson Institute of Heraldry" for the Metras coat of arms, it is describes as: "Gules, a fess or, between three cocks of the last."
Source: Les Planches de l'Armorial General, J.B. Rietstap
Manuscript Number: 071886-17

So quick web research translates it as a red shield (represting Military fortitude or magnanimity), with a gold (generosity) horizontal bar (Military belt or girdle of honor) which is the middle third of the shield. Then there are 2 gold cocks (Courage, always ready for battle, ready to fight to the death) one to the upper left and right, and a third cock under the fess, centered. There is no information on the sheet about a crest (part above the shield) for the coat.

The company (Sanson) doesn't exist anymore (since the 70s) and I can't find any references online to the historical source seperate from references to Sanson.

If anyone can supply any additional information, especially info on the crest, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
-Matt

For the record, I'm Matthew Metras (1980), Rochester, NY 2nd son of Ronald R. Metras (1946), New Bedford, MA, 2nd son of Rene George Metras, New Bedford (i think), 5th son of Napoleon Metras, Quebec (possibly Quebec City), Canada.

Any info on this branch of the Metras family would also be helpful
Her name was Agathi Metro Stavros married to Lucas Stavros both from Albania.
Metro, Nowak, Novak, Synoweic

I am looking for relatives or should I say missing relatives. My grandfather born Leonard John Metro June 24, 1899, somewhere near the Carpathian Mts (Poland or so he said) My grandmother was Polish and when they argued, she would always tell him he didn't speak good Polish! Grandma said that he had changed his name, didn't know from what. The only things that he would tell us, was that he came to the US in the early 1900's ( 1906/1907)alone, his parents were already here, he came in with a girl named Synoweic. While here his parents had another child named Hazel, their names were Joseph and Olga. He spoke of an uncle Novak, used to tease that he was related to Kim Novak (just a joke I'm sure)
Anyway he left home when he was 16 and never went back, and never told us anymore about his family. He married my grandmother in 1928 Buffalo NY...So who was he before 1928?? He had a series of numbers tatooed on his left arm (no he wasn't jewish, we can place him before WWII) When asked what the numbers meant, all he would say was that it was the place where he was born. He mentioned places like Mass. Washington D.C.. Anyone who can help in anyway, I would appreciate it very much.
Thank you
Susan

Here's some related info . . .

Interesting. My gdfather, Joseph Camille Metras, grew up along the NewYork/Vermont-Canadian border and migrated south to Springfield/Holyoke, MA. The Adirondack wild fire of 1905 destroyed the church holding the the vital records. He and his 12 siblings are decended from Quebec. It is speculated that he was decended from Henri METRAS whom immigrated at age 7 in 1895 to Quebec per "Census of Canada: Province of Quebec National Archives of Canada: Microfilm Reel No. T-6513, District 140 - Beauharnois, Sub-District H1 - Salaberry de Valleyfield, Town, page 11"

Here's a helpful tip.
