I'm curious about your Swiss relatives. Where in Switzerland were your relatives located?

I'm descended from Anton Metler b.1826 who came to the USA in 1854 and settled in Knox County Tennessee. My brick wall is Anton's parents, Anton Mettler and Josepha Kistler of Reichenburg, canton Schwytz, Switzerland.

My maiden name was Metler. We are able to trace our family back to the 1400's. We also trace it back to Hunterdown, travel to Canada in 1789, settle in North Pelham west of Niagara. My sister is also Mary Metler; she lives in California now. Johann was one of our ancestors. My Great-Grandfather was also Philip. Holland is also in our background. We had relatives in Switzerland.

Remarkably, I was talking to Isaiah's 99-year old granddaughter yesterday. She too is curious about her grandfather. He and Eliza Doughman Mettler divorced, and their son, John Mettler, returned to his mother's hometown, Tracy, Iowa. I just found a Doughman genealogy that looks good, but can't find out anything more than you have about Isaiah, and you have his death date, which I did not have. Have you made any progress on Isaiah.

Wilson Brown

There are several, one has siblings listed for her.

Mary Ann B. Slack, B. Makefield, Lower Makefield Twp. Bucks Co PA. Parents Abraham Slack and Mary Mann. If you don't let me know I will send you a list. I am not sure this is the right Mary Ann I am looking for, But she named 2 of her sons Abraham and Isaac and she had brothers by this name.

I am researching a family that has traced back to this area of NJ. Information I found gives the spouse's name as METTLEN, but I have not been able to find a single thing on this name, and I am searching now on the assumption that it was misspelled in my earlier info. Have you found any references to a Susanna METTLER, b abt 1810 that married a Mathew CAMPBELL? They relocated to Columbia Co, PA about 1830, and had a daughter named Elizabeth b May 1834.
this may be a long shot, but I thought I would ask,
thanks for any help you can offer

Lemuel and Nancy Mettler

Looking for info. on a Lemuel Mettler and his wife Nancy. Also, looking for info. on their son Harry, who I suspect is my greatgrandfather, my Mother only knew him by the name of Ira Harry. Harry, from various dates was born bet. 1867-1869, in Kansas. My Mother never knew who Ira Harrys parents were. I have only found, even with other sites, that there was a Harry b. 1867 to a Lemuel and Nancy Mettler. Lemuel is listed as being from Indiana b. in 1831 (from pre 1900 Censuses) and Nancy from Ohio b. in 1841.
And if anyone recognizes this family, does anyone have info on a John Mettler b, 1855 in Kansas. Weird thing on this person, is that my g-grandfather Ira had married a H. Winifred Bell Feb. 17, 1902. By a 1930 Census, Ira and Winifred divorced? I know that Ira had left Winifred, cause he went West with his daughter (my grandmother) and her family. Winifred is listed in a 1930 Census, along with Harry Mettler, her and Ira' son, along with a man with the name of John Mettler. He' listed as the head of house while Winifred is listed as Wife. My Mother is dumbfounded, she never heard of a John. We are wondering if this John even existed. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Morgan Cole

This would have been in the late 1700's/early 1800's.

They were probably around the Sussex/Warren County area of New Jersey. The name Mettler keeps popping up as a middle name elsewhere in the family, but this is the only person in the tree with the surname Mettler.

Do you have anything on the Mettler's that were from this area?

Hello Kirk, thank you for the info, it was very interesting because it connected with another line in my family. First of all I have Miriam as being born on 7/6/1836, died 3/29/1899 in Williams Co. where I am from. The interesting thing is that Benjamine Cambell Sr.sisiter Jane is married to Caleb Ely my 2 great grandfather. They were the children of Obadiah Campbell born7/2/1740 in Sussex Co. N.J.; died 3/26/1819 in Northcomberland Co. Pa.(buried on farm 4 miles east of Elysburg). He was the son of Robert Campbell. Mary Opdycke was born 9/1/1763 in Sussex Co. N.J., died 8/10/1801 in Northcomberland Co. Pa. daughter of Benjamine Opdycke wife unknown. I have much info on Obadiah, he was a tailor by trade. It is also interesting that in the Spring of 1813 Robert Teitsworth, Samuel Ely, and Obadiah Campbell,Ju. were chosen as trustees of the Elysburg school district. Obadiah was a soldier of the American Revolution. I have info on the Opdycke's and I can send them by snail mail is you want to give me your address.I also have the parent of Mary Opdyke as Benjamine born 1721, N.J. married to Joanna. Benjamine's father was Albert Opduke born about 1685 N.Y. died 1752 in N.J. married to an Elizabeth and Albert's father Johannes Opdyke maybe married to a Catherine.
There were a few that I have written to that might be interested in this as well. Thank you, Sharon Knoop

Thank you for your reply. I am interested in what you may have. Their daughter Delay Mettler married Harmon Ely. Harmon's grandmother was Jeanette Jane Campbell born 1780 in Northcumberland Co. Pa. the daughter of Obadiah Campbell and Mary opdyke. I wonder if there is any connection. Do you have any dates on William and Johannah?
Thank you again for your information.
Sharon

Hi Tammy,

My Mettlers - who changed the spelling to Metler in this country- came from Reichenburg, Canton Schwyz, Switzerland and settled in Knox County Tennessee. The parents of my great great grandfather were Anton Mettler and Josepha Kistler.

My great great grandparents were Anton Metler b. 9 Dec 1826 and Waldburga Freuler b 24 Aug 1823. They arrived in America 1 March 1854 and shortly thereafter settled in Knox County Tennessee. Two brothers and a married sister eventually followed Anton and Waldburga to America and to Knox County. One sister remained behind in Switzerland. I have nothing on her, but I have most of the descendants of the family who migrated to Knoxville.

Any of this sound familiar to you?

Seeking information on the origins of James and Sarah Mettler. James was born ca. 1810 in NJ. He is thought to be one of four brothers (with Francis, Burleen, and Elijah) who migrated from Warren County, NJ to Hocking County, OH between 1838-1840. James apparently died in the 1850s or 1860s. By 1870, the widowed Sarah was living in Cumberland County, IL. She last appears in the 1880 census.
Their children: Caroline B. (1832), Anna (1834), Prudence (1836), Joseph (1838), Peter (1840), John (1845), Elias (ca. 1847), Mary (1850), and Frances (1854).
My line is through Caroline, who married Henry Snyder in Hocking County, OH, in 1851.
