Joanna Preston was my great-great-aunt (her next-younger brother, John, being my great-great-grandfather). Joanna's mother, Eliza, was also a Metz (b. ca. 1812, m. Meshech Preston Jan. 29, 1834). I am very much interested in any information you have to share about the Metzes, the Prestons, and their related Allegany County families.

I found a real estate document dated 1882 transferring land to John Barnes from Isaac N. W. Metts, Emily Metts, William & wife Mary A. Metts, Henry & wife Johannah Metts and Lavina & husband Henry Spiker. The land was part of the William Barnes estate, William died in Allegany County in 1821. William's Will indicates that he had two sons William and John and two daughters Abigale and Ruth. Abigale married James Shimer who died in 1841. Ruth married Isaac Metts, I'm not sure if Isaac N.W., William, Henry, Emily and Lavina are the children of Isaac or of Isaac and Ruth's son John. William Barnes states in his will "I give to my daughter Ruth the plantation I got of John Rhodes her life time and at her death I leave it to her son John Metts". It seems to me that their father may have been John Metts since the property was to go to John after his mother Ruth died. Does anyone have information on these families?

Re: John, Gayley, and ? Metts, Coleman Co TX 1910

My interest in the Metts family is through Mary Fay Della Davis, wife of Claud Linnis Metts (spelling from several entries in the Texas Birth Index). I show that they had at least 11 children: Zelma Lavina,Tressie Beatrice, Birdie Mae, Malcolm McKinley, Dessie and Bessie (twins), Jocie Alene, Leroy, Willie Oleta, Curtis Ray, and Claud Linnis, Jr.

I have children and grandchildren for most of those named. The only ones I show with a Colorado connection are Leroy, Willie, Curtis, and Claud. Please corect me if I'm wrong.

For Leroy I have wives Thelma Hallon (no dates) and Juanta ? (of Denver) and just two children, Garry and Linda, though I suspect there were others, along with grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Oleta is listed (in my notes) with two husbands, Johnny Mapley and George Smith. I don't have any children for her.

Curtis married Melba Dean McDonald and had two children in Texas, but was survivd by a wife and four children.

Claud married Joan ? of Denver. He had a child, Glenn Edwards, born in Texas. He died in Arkansas.

There is more detail, of course; this is just an outline to give you an idea of what I've learned about this family since I posted the message last year. I know more about those who stayed in Texas through the Texas Birth Index and some other sources.

Della Davis was a daughter of Mary Virginia "Mollie" Taylor and William Travis Davis, and a granddaughter of Anthony Taylor (1818-1905) and Frances ?. My wife is a great-granddaughter of Anthony Taylor and his second wife, Martha Lee. I've been looking for Anthony's descendants.

If you'd like to continue this exchange directly, I'm jimmcmillen@earthlink.net

Nancy Annie Metts (GA or FL)

Greetings, I am looking for any information on Nancy Annie Metts. The bits of information I do have is that she was born in Georgia around 1836 and died in 1900 in South Florida, possibly Lee County/Fort Myers area. She married William Sidney Clay and lived in South Florida. Their children were Mary, Louisa, Jennette, Sidney, Eliza and Mary (all girls). Family stories tell that Nancy was raised on a Georgia plantation that was burned during the Civil War. Her family was said to be of French ancestry.

Re: Mary Metts daughter of Redding Metts

Nancy, I don't know the answer to that, unless they named more than one daughter Mary. I have a copy of James A. Carver and Mary's marriage cert. for the 9th. Two daughters marrying one day apart is strange also, why wouldn't they just have a double wedding on the same day to make it easy for the families, and guests? Maybe Nancy is the middle name and she used it because of her older sister Mary? It happened on my ggrandmother's line. Many women went by their middle name or even nick names back then. My ggrandmother went by the name "Icie" which is on most legal documents I've found for her, but her real name is "Emmarintha Irena Delilah Icyphene", so I don't blame her for not putting that on anything. The research on this family just gets stranger by the day.

James, I would like to access your private website. My email is thormahlen@essex1.com. I only recently found out about this side of my family. I live only 3 hours away from Louisa County and can go and do any research needed. Louisa and Richard Metts were my great-grandparents. My grandmother Gladys Mae Reddick (1895-1971) was raised by Louisa and Richard. Her mother was Martha Jane Metts (1875-1895). She had married Frank Gilbert Reddick and died only 2 months after giving birth to Gladys. The information I have is from my cousin ( I am trying to get her to tell me what is confirmed information at this point so I don't have to re-research). I have this information- Richard Harkless Metts born 20 Jan 1847 In Jacktown, Oh. Died 1926. Married Louise Iowa(Middle name?) Strope who was known as Lyde on 21 Dec 1871. She was born 15 June 1855 and died 2 Nov 1941 in Louisa Co., Iowa. Richard's father was Edmund who married Martha Jane Marten on 26 april 1842. I have information back on Martha Jane Marten family but no further on Edmund at this point. Thanks. Looking forward to hearing from you.

John Metts and part of his family, including Gayley 20, appear in Coleman County, Texas, in the 1910 census. Was there another son, age about 22, initials possibly CL or GL, who married Mary Kay "Della" Davis (daughter of William T and Mary Davis) a year or two before 1910, probably in Coleman County where her parents were listed in 1910 on the census page just before the Metts. Gotta be!

I have not been able to find this younger Metts family in 1910 or 1930, though I'm pretty sure they were in Bryan County, Oklahoma, in 1920.

Cousin Cathy ... I just returned from McRae, GA (Telfair Co) where I looked at, and copied, the original marriage record for JESSE LANKFORD to MARY METTS, 8 Aug 1844! Yes, the record is "Mary"!! Why Jess's wife is named "Nancy" in the 1850 Clinch Co, GA census records, I don't know. It seems strange since the oldest son William Langford was 5 yrs in 1850, making him born about 1845 ... only 1 yr after Jesse's marriage to 'Mary'!! Questions, questions, no answers yet. Her name might is a puzzle.

Hi,

I have a relative named Joseph F Metts from Md, b. ~1847. He's probably from Allegany Co, but I can't find any further info on his ancestors. I can only trace his whereabouts after about 1860 to Pennsylvania. He eventually settled down in Millstone, Elk there for many years. He was married to a Caroline "Carrie" M Metts from Penn., but I don't know her maiden name or parents yet either.

There are quite a few possibilities here. I was wondering if you knew of any leads or info that would fit.

Sincerely,
David Metts
