EUGENE and SUSAN METZ
Eugene METZ was born October 19, 1859,
at Alsace-Lorraine, France, son of Sigmund
and Mary Josephine METZ, where he was
raised on his father's farm.
Eugene arrived in the United States on APril 2, 1881,
and went to Buffalo, NY, where he worked in a
brewery. In that city a priest told him of the Catholic
colony [I.C.C.O.] that was being organized to settle
in Nobles county, Minnesota. Mr. Metz moved to
the Lismore area in April 1882.
Eugene worked as a farm hand for several years, later
renting land and in 1889 he purchased his own farm on the
NE 1/4 of section 23, Lismore township, Nobles county, MN.
In Adrian, January 31, 1893, Eugene was united in marriage
to Susan Merkel, a native of Germany who had come to
America when two years of age. Following their marriage
they moved to the farm that Eugene purchased earlier. At
that time it was wild prairie. This farm has remained in the
Metz family and is presently farmed by his grandson,
Gilbert METZ. Eugene later purchased the N 1/2 of section
13 [Lismore township]. This property, too, remains in the
Metz family.
Eugen and Susan's children included:
