Alfred Metz, Sr. the son of Urban and Anna Hahn Metz was born on July 21, 1915 on a farm south-east of Petersburg, Nebraska. He received his elementary education at Boone County School District #56 and St. John’s Parochial school in Petersburg.

Following his education, he farmed with his father and worked at a Dairy Farm in Michigan. In 1942 he was the first man drafted in Boone County following the attack on Pearl Harbor. He served in the United States Army in the Phillippines and areas of the South Pacific during WWII. Following his honorable discharge in 1946, Alf returned to Petersburg.

On September 14, 1948 he married Delores Tunink at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Petersburg. They farmed and raised their four children near Petersburg. Alf coached baseball for many years, along with serving on the School Board of District #3. He was a long-time member of St. John’s Catholic Church and was a member of the Holy Name Society in Petersburg. Alf was a 60 year member of both the Petersburg American Legion Post #334 and the V.F.W. Post #736 of Albion.

Following his retirement in 1990, Alf and Delores moved to Aurora, Nebraska where they lived until December of 2003 when they returned to Petersburg.

Alf entered the Mid-Nebraska Lutheran Home in Newman Grove in July of 2005 following a heart attack. It was there where he died Monday, September 5, 2005 at the age of 90.

Surviving is his wife Delores of Petersburg; 2 daughters: Kathleen Morgan & husband Dan of Albion; Carol Thieman & husband Tony of Petersburg; 2 sons: Alfred Jr. & wife Carol of Cedar Rapids, NE; and Ron Metz of Petersburg; one sister Hildegarde Henn also of Petersburg; 13 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, along with many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister Catherine Veik.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 9, 2005 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Petersburg with Fr. Stan Schmit officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery with military rites conducted by the Petersburg American Legion Post #334.

Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, 2005 at the church with wake services at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue Friday morning from 9:00 a.m. until service time.

Levander Funeral Home in Albion is in charge of arrangements.
