Classification: Query
Surnames: Michaels, Micheals, Michael
Hi,
I am looking for any information on William H. Michaels, who, according to the 1900 Census, was born in January 1840. He was reportedly from Allegany County, Maryland and, according to his death certificate, was the son of Philip Michael. I have been told that his middle name was Harmon.
Anyway, the earliest trace I have of him is his 27 August 1862 marriage to Rhoda Ann Kemp (1838-1892), which I believe took place in Fayette County, PA. He fought briefly in the Civil War (enlisting in 1862) but deserted on 18 July 1863. He had six children: James, Ossie Catherine, Jerusha, Harmon William, Susan Lavada, and John Mansfield. He lived in Somerset County, PA from the 1870s-1890s before moving back to Fayette County, PA, dying in Uniontown on 9 May 1918. His death certificate gives his surname as Michael and he was known to also use the spelling Micheals.
He reportedly had brothers named Ed and Lou, but I have found no evidence to support this. I have been trying to track down his ancestors for a few years now but have had no luck whatsoever, with his marriage being the earliest evidence of him.
Please let me know.
Thanks!
Ray Michaels
