I have a pretty good file of the Michalek's of Petersburg. The patriarch/matriarch were Anton and Katherine, buried in St John's cemetery in Dinwiddie. The arrived in Baltimore on April 26, 1897 and in Petersburg on April 27, 1897. A child was born at sea on April 20, 1897 and was baptized at St Joseph's in Petersburg on 4/27/1897.

Emil John was my grandfather's nephew.

My email address is dorothy.michalek@gmail.com

I have a great-grandfather whose name is Joseph Michalek and was born in Svidnik, Slovak Republic in 1813 and died in 1901. Some evidence that his father's name is Jan (John). I have a relatively full family tree peppered with Michalek. However, notes prior to mine mention no names that are found in my family tree. Any help in knowing Joseph's father would be greatly appreciated.
David Kurovski
david.kurovski@mail.sprint.com

Michalek - Detroit, MI c. early 1900's

I'm researching the family of Peter and Rose (Stawarz) [Grala] Graller who immigrated from Poland (region currently unknown) and settled in the Detroit, Wayne county area of Michigan in the early 1900's. (The original Polish form of the surname was Grala and it was "Americanized" to Graller shortly upon immigration; it remains as Graller today).

Peter and Rose (Stawarz) Graller had at least 6 children, all of whom were baptized at St. Hedwig Catholic Church in Detroit, MI. I am in possession of the baptismal certificates of all the Graller children. These baptismal certificates included the names of the children's godparents, and I've been trying to trace those names to determine any family relationships.

One of the sons of Peter and Rose (Stawarz) Graller, Gerald, was born on 16 Dec 1929 in Detroit, Wayne Co., MI and he died 11 Aug 1998 in Detroit. At this time I don't know who or if he married. The godparents at his baptism were Adalbertus Michalek and Ludovica Stawarz. He may have gone by Adelbert, Albert, Delbert, or even another name entirely. I have been unable to track him down.

I did find in the Social Security Death Index (SSDI) one Ludwika Michalek, born 6 Sep 1900 and died Sep 1978. This could possible be the Ludovica Stawarz above, and perhaps she married Mr. Michalek. This is purely speculation, however.

Surnames associated with the godparents of Gerald Graller's siblings are as follows: Kosciebny/Koscielny, Wygonik, Adamkiewicz, Galarowic/Galarowicz, Winiarowski, Wisniewski, Naboznia, and Stawarz - the maiden name of Gerald's mother.

Godparents were chosen for a reason and if there is a family relationship between the Michalek's and the Grala/Graller's I'd be interested to know of it.

If any of the above rings a bell with anyone, please let me know. I do have (some) additional info I can share as well. Good luck in your continued genealogical pursuits.

Stephanie

Albert or Adalbert Michalak, son of Franciszek Michalak and Maryanna Lipowicz, was born about 1883 in Kiel, Poland and he died February 2, 1948 in Detroit, Michigan. He married Anna Klimowski on October 3, 1904.
Francisek and Maryanna Michalak came to the United States
about 1890. They lived on the west side of Detroit, Michigan and I believe they had 11 children: Joseph, Martin, Ignatius, John Jeremiah, Albert, Cecilia (Barylski), Stella (Matyniak), Michael J, Edward D, Frank J, and Stephen A.
Franciszek and Maryanna Michalak are buried at Holy Cross Cemetery in Detroit, Michigan.

In search of anyone related to Carl E. Michalek. He was born in Wethersfield, Connecticut and was the son of the late Carl Michalek and Elizabeth Albertina Michalek. (Elizabeth was born 9/1/1896 and died 12/20/1948 and is buried in Soldiers Field Cemetery in Wethersfield, CT) He served in the US Navy and I believe he was born about July 14, 1927. Elizabeth (born Elizabeth Rose Delaney) was my Great Grandmother and had a past that she hid from her 2nd husband, Carl Michalek. Carl E. Michalek (Jr.) had 5 half siblings from his mother's previous marriage to Clarence Howard Vredenburgh. One sibling (my grandmother who is now 89) is still living. I would like to exchange information. I have some beautiful photos of Elizabeth that would be a treasure to any descendants. My grandmother would also love to hear of any descendants of Carl, Jr's... She is sharp as a tack and very interested. Thanks for any help.

Re: MICHALEK

The Michaleks lived near Petersburg, Virginia in the early 20th century. My uncle, Louis Kofron, married Helen Michalek, who lives in Delaware. Marian Michalek married another of my uncles, Joseph Kofron, and they lived in the area of Petersburg, Virginia. When hunting my relatives in the 1910 - 1920 Census records, I found entries for the Michalek family but, unfortunately, didn't take notes. I remember Emil Michalek as a fellow student at St. Joseph's parochial school in Petersburg but he was several years older than I was.
