Octave Mitchell

My great grandfather, Octave Mitchell(Michel, Michael, Mitchel), married Julia Bourbeau in Wyandotte, Michigan in 1867. He was born in Bas Canada. I really don't know where she was born. Records vary. I am seeking information about either of their parents. Both of their parents were born in Canada (French). Octave and Julia lived in Monguagon, Wayne, Michigan for a number of years. He was remarried by the 1920 census. Together, he and Julia had 15 children. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Cindy

The Thirty Years War (1618–1648) significantly decreased the populace of the German states. Some areas were almost completed devastated by war, famine, and disease. Schallodenbach and the surrounding villages, in present-day southwest Germany, included. My Bossong ancestors moved into the area (from the Low Countries) in the mid-17th century. Not sure when the Michels arrived or where they emigrated.

However, this area was never part of the "Austrian" Empire ... unless you are referring to the Eastern Habsburg Dynasty which was based in present-day Austria. This dynasty (empire in it's own right) supplied many emperors for the Holy Roman Empire and was the main imperial power until the rise of Prussia.

The Habsburg Empire was not confined to the Holy Roman Empire and it extended into many present-day Eastern countries like Hungary, Romania, Czech Republic, among others. Your reference to Slavic and Romanian provinces as well as Austria sounds like you are referencing the Habsburg Empire east of Bavaria.

Some links that may be of interest ...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Habsburg_dynasty
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Habsburg_empire

Hi,
The information you describe regarding the small "German" town near the french border with Germany -- really sets off some flags! My understanding from my oldest brother is that our family had been enticed to immigrate from such a town near France sometime in the 16th century to a "new" German enclave, by the promise of land and bussiness oportunities.
The new town was built & located within the Austrian empire who aparently needed to revialise & repopulate some newly aquired "property" in what would eventually become the Slavic & Romaniain provinces. My father remembered having floated on reed rafts as a young boy -- as barges went past.

Hello - my name is Christina and I have been doing some research about the last name Michel. My Mother's maiden name is Michel and we have been able to date back to 1536 to a Juan Michel who married a local woman with the last name of Corona. The family is from El Rancho de los Gonzales in Jalisco Mexico. I think he (Juan Michel / Jean Michel) came over on a boat from Germany and was an expert miner - they landed in Sultepec Mexico. I am still working on my research but would love to hear your story. Thank you.

I am a MICHEL and have been working on my family history for about fifteen years and how to do genealogy research for about five years. MICHEL was and is a common surname in the southern part of Germany and France that has been passed back and forth between those two countries several times in the past. It is now in the part of Germany called Baden-Wurttemburg near Strasbourg in France and Stuttgart in Germany. Many MICHEL's came to the US in the early 1800's and most settled in the upper midwest, but some stayed on or near the east coast. Apparently, one family moved to Mexico and became quite famous as they were large landholders.
In my research, I keep encountering the descendants of that group and they are all puzzled as they encounter that French/German name in Mexico.

Looking for anyone researching this family:

Abraham Michel born 1837 in Switzerland died?? in Ill???

Elizabeth Michel nee Knuchel born in 1832 Switzerland died??? in Ill???

Children

Abraham Michel/Mitchell born 1865 in possibly St. Clair Co, Ill. married Maggie Whitlock in 1892 Atoka, Oklahoma Territory. Abe Mitchell died 1957 in Marlow, Stephens Co, Oklahoma. Maggie died 1926 in Marlow, Oklahoma. They are my great-great-grandparents.

Lena Michel born 1867 married? died?

John Michel born 1869 married? died?

I found this family in the 1880 U.S. Census for St. Clair Co, Illinois.

Abraham and Elizabeth Michel were married in 1861 in Switzerland. So I am guessing they came over to America between 1862-1863.

Hi Carol-
I hope this gets to you as I am responding to a pretty old post. I am struck by two things about your post of April 1st, 2003. The first is that my grandfather was Henry MICHEL of Whitesboro, NY. Rather close to Barneveld, NY. The second thing is that there is family lore that he had a brother who was a "farmer, up north". Look at a map showing both Barneveld and Whitesboro. I think it might qualify as "up north".
Now, to your question. So far as I know, Henry didn't spell his name Mykel, but he did sign it Michel, Michael, and Mischel at various times in his life. I know he was born in Germany (Reichenau is the current best bet), born in 1855, migrated to the US in 1883, married in Fort Plain, NY in 1884 (to a woman whose family was also from Germany). He died in Utica, NY on January 4, 1947. I do have some more on him, but do you think they might be related? Are the times right, etc?

Don Michel

I know its been some time since you posted; however, my G-G-G-G grandmother was Catharina Elisabetha Michel, born 1811 in Weyer, Hessen-Nassau, Prussia. She was married to Christian Scheurer, born 1798 in Eppenrod, Hessen-Nassau, Prussia. She was daughter of Johann Philipp Michel, born in Nochern, Hessen-Nassau in 1777 and Catharina Elisabetha Maus, born in 1783 in Weyer, Hessen-Nassau.

My family immigrated to the US, but its possible our Michel's were related back here in Germany/Prussia.

please email: sarah_bigham@yahoo.com

His first son was named Charles (b.1875). The family name changed to Michael (and later Michaels). He was a farmer and had a farm in Amherst NY, near Buffalo. His wife was Eliseneth, born in 1848. He married Agnes Koeppe and disappeared in late 1928 or early 1929. His daughter, Shirley, was born shortly after he disappeared. We know nothing about why he disappeared or what became of him.

Sounds like we're related. I am Bernard's Great Great Grandson. The information I've compiled is identical to yours. What I'm really looking for are images of Bernard and his son George. It seems that my branch of the family didn't save many photos. I live in Missouri and I'm assumming most of the photos were passed down locally in Minnesota so I'm at a geographic disadvantage. If you have any old images it would really be helpful in completing my project.
Thanks
Scott Michel

Johann Heinrich Lackmann descendants

I am trying to locate the descendants of a distant cousin of mine, Alice Richards, who married a John Heinrich Lackmann. They had a family of nine children: Sheldon, Roland, Junia, Iris, Lyle, Elgyn, Audian and twins Glenn and Orville. I think the family may have lived in SD. Alice, who had grown up in the southern part of the state, is buried in Belle Fourche, SD. Any leads would be appreciated. G. Richards

I'm searching for info on the 2 sisters Marie Haydee Michel and Josephine Marie Michel, daughters of Victor E. Michel and Marie Josephine De Alpuente. These sisters each married a SARRAT - Marie m. 1913 to George A. Sarrat Jr., while Josephine m. abt 1910 to Pierre L Sarrat. Were the Sarrat men related? Any family of Pierre Sarrat?
