death of Anna Midgley Hahn, born 1858 Canada, died 1940 California

Minneapolis Messenger, Ottawa County, Kansas, May 30, 1940, page 1:
MRS. ANNA MIDGLEY HAHN
Misses Jennie and Lizzie Midgley received word the past week of the death of their sister, Mrs. J. Owen Hahn, of Los Angeles, California, who passed away May 20th at her home, at the age of 82 years.
Mrs. Hahn was Anna Midgley, the eldest daughter of the ten Midgley children, of whom there are now remaining Misses Jennie and Lizzie, of Minneapolis, and George Midgley of Newkirk, Oklahoma. Mrs. Hahn also leaves her devoted husband, who will continue to live in Los Angeles. While Mrs. Hahn had been in rather poor health for a long time, her fatal illness lasted but one day, acute indigestion being the direct cause.
She was the mother of two children, both of whom preceded her in death. She had not visited the old home here for many years, ill health making it impractical for her to attempt the long journey. However, she is well remembered by many old time friends.

California Death Records:
HAHN ANNA MAY 04/03/1858 HARGROVE MIDGLEY F CANADA LOS ANGELES(19) 05/20/1940

obit for Mary Midgley Felton, born 1862 Canada, died 1940 Colorado

Minneapolis Messenger, Ottawa County, Kansas, Feb. 22, 1940, page 8:
MRS. MARY FELTON
Mrs. Mary Midgley Felton, sister of Misses Jennie and Lizzie Midgley, of Minneapolis, died at her home in Denver, Colorado, last Wednesday night, at the age of 77 years
Mrs. Felton was quite well known in Minneapolis, having lived here for twenty-one years when a girl and young lady, and also having visited here many times throughout her later life.
She was born in Embro, Canada, in November, 1882. She came to this county when the Midgley family migrated here from Canada in 1872. Here she lived and grew to womanhood, making Minneapolis her home until 1893 when she was married and went with her husband to live in Colorado. She lived there throughout the remainder of her life, making her residence in Denver for the past several years. Her husband died in 1912, and though they had no children, she preferred to live there where she could look after her property.
Nevertheless, Minneapolis also seemed home to her and she enjoyed coming here for numerous visits with other members of the family and with friends. She was an active woman and enjoyed good health right up to the last. Her death was sudden, resulting from a cerebral hemorrhage sometime during the night. She had been in fine spirits the previous evening and retired to her rooms in an apartment hotel as usual Wednesday night. When she did not appear for breakfast at the usual time a maid went to her apartment and found she had passed away during the night.
The Midgley sisters here were notified and Miss Lizzie went to Denver, where she was joined by a nephew, Frank Midgley, of Newkirk, Oklahoma.
Funeral services were held at Denver, Saturday, Feb. 17, at a mortuary, conducted by the Rector of the St. Andrews Episcopal church, of that city. Miss Lizzie then brought her home to Minneapolis, to rest in the family plot in Highland cemetery, along with other members of the family. A brief service was held at the graveside there, Sunday at 12:30 p.m., with Rev. H.B. Moore, rector of the local Episcopal church, in charge.
Besides her sisters, Misses Jennie and Lizzie Midgley, of this city, Mrs. Felton leaves one other sister, Mrs. Owen Hahn, of Los Angeles, California, and one brother, George Midgley, of Newkirk, Oklahoma; also four nieces and four nephews.

obit for William Midgley, born 1866 Canada, died 1939 Seattle, WA

Minneapolis Messenger, Ottawa County, Kansas, March 30, 1939:
WILL MIDGLEY
Will Midgley, brother of Misses Lizzie and Jennie Midgley, of the city, died at his home in Seattle, Wash., Thursday, March 23, of heart trouble. He was 72 years, 8 months and 11 days old.
Misses Lizzie and Jennie Midgley made an airplane trip to Seattle the first of last week, called by his serious illness, and arrived there a couple of days before his death. They brought his body here Monday, arriving in Salina on the Union Pacific during the morning. He was brought here direct from the train by Linus Smith, and funeral services were held at the graveside in Highland cemetery at noon, with Rev. H.B. Moore in charge. Pall bearers were Frank Chapin, Roy Carlson, C.C. Larzalere, C.C. Davis, John Pickrell and M.S. Bennett.
Will Midgley came here with his parents from Canada when a small boy, the family coming here to make their home in 1872. When a young man he went to Colorado and worked in the mines for a while. Then he went to Alaska, where he spent about thirty years, retiring about eight years ago to live in Seattle, Washington. He had been back to the old home here a few times spending several weeks here a couple of years ago, visiting his sisters and renewing old friendships.
He had never married, but leaves one brother and four sisters. These are the tow sisters here, Misses Lizzie and Jennie, Mrs. Anna Haun, of Los Angeles, Calif. and Mrs. Mary Felton, of Denver, Colo. They will come direct to Highland cemetery, where graveside services will be conducted by Rev. H.B.
Hi I'm not really related to you but I think I might have found something on your grandmother. If her father's name is Francis Edwin Midgley and her mother's name is Ann Lazenby, then this might be your grandmother. I searched your grandmother's name, birth year, and birth place and a person by the name of Lilian Midgley popped up. The tree creator is "wardfamilytree1651". I hope this is your grandmother!

I am very interested in your post. My Grandmother was a Mable Midgley who married into the Smith family, They had my father George, whou was later adopted by his Uncle George (Mable's brother, which gave me back the Midgley name). All of this took place in Jersey City, NJ. I can only guess, but that would make John a possible brother of Mable and George.

Since the previous posting, I think I have found out that Philip and Elizabeth Midgley come to America on the Republic on July 5, 1843. Besides John there was a daughter Elizabeth and a son Robert. I have found the son Robert in Wisconsin in 1850 and I have a purchase date for land by Philip Sept. 1, 1844. If anyone has information about them, I would appreciate it. I have been told that they came from Yorkshire but have not found any information to date on that.

thank you.

Carol

Hi Leon,
No doubt somewhere in the mist of time you are linked into my part of the Midgley tree.

Since posting the original query i have found that John should have been Joseph who married Mary Smith, they had a Jospeh (b1792) he married Sarah, they had a John (b 1815) he married Jane and they had William (b 1838 Bingley) he married Sarah and their family grave is in Ingrow Keighly, which I saw last year.

Regards
Mark

This is my husband's grandfather. I am stunned, because we were told they were not in United Cemetery (or anywhere else) and we had decided that he was cremated. Does it say anything else? Are there other Midgleys there? I have info on this family if anyone is related. Margarite was his second wife and we know nothing at all about her.

Thank you,

Clare Midgley

It may be her parents were Elijah (Elizah) b: abt 1816 m Elizabeth Brown b: abt 1821. There are Christening records for Elijah dated Oct. 10, 1815, Brayton, Yorkshire. Born to Samuel and Mary. I'm not sure if this correct. Can anyone help?
