Midkiff marriage record

I wish to state that Yates Publishing. U.S. and International Marriage Records, 1560-1900 [database on-line] is incorrect as to the marriage record of Franklin Preston Midkiff and Ellender Oliver. The information published as fact was gleened from a request I sent to Yates Publishing many years ago. I gave the marriage date and place of this couple as a possibility and asked them if they could verify the information. It is now on many family trees and on the disc published by Yates as a factual marriage date. If you have this information included in your family tree based on the Yates Publishing company record, you should remove the information. A marriage date or place for this couple has never been proven by any researcher. Also the parentage of Franklin Preston Midkiff listed as John Midkiff and Caty Miller is mis-information. They were entered by me as speculative parents and that information also has never been proven by any researcher.

Hello, I am also looking for info on Pearl and Bethel Midkiff. She was the dtr of James T and Hattie Mills. hattie was James 's first wife. She dies when Pearl was about 10. James remarried to ALlie Ivey. Allie was my husband's grandmother. I found Pearl had married a Clyde
Sandefur in 1920. they divorced. would like to know when she married Bethel Midkiff. I have a copy of a letter she wrote in 1968 to her brother Ted while she was living in Evansville Indiana. She said her husband was still working at that time. In 1970 she wrote Ted again. She does not ention her husband but does name her 3 dtrs.Louise Sloan, lived in Des Arc Arkansas, Hattie Cochran who lived in Hot Springs Ark and Edith Childers who also lived in Des Arc Arkansas. Des Arc is where her first husband is buried. Do not know if these children were the first husband's or not. From what some family members hae said,Pearl was married possibly 3 times.

I am looking for any information about Morris Midkiff's first wife, Roseanna. She is in an 1880 census but then she disappears. He married my great-great grandmother Nancy Kidd around 1884. I cannot find a death record on Roseanna, but I found where 2 of her and Morris's children died after he married Nancy. Her maiden name was Brogan. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I heard a family rumor that Fannie A Midkiff daughter of Charles Sims Midkiff married William Hunt. If this is the case, then William and Fannie's daughter Sina Ann Eliza Hunt married a first cousin, Walter Emerson Midkiff. Can anyone confirm or deny this? Thank you!

Jessica

Here are some clues:

Legend has it that Charles Sims was born in Louisiana because the family had fled from Sand Hill near Bedias in the wake of Santa Anna's army sweeping across Texas.

The Runaway Scrape

The term Runaway Scrape was the name Texans applied to the flight from their homes when Antonio López de Santa Anna began his attempted conquest of Texas in February 1836. The first communities to be affected were those in the south central portions of Texas around San Patricio, Refugio, and San Antonio. The people began to leave that area as early as January 14, 1836, when the Mexicans were reported gathering on the Rio Grande. When Sam Houston arrived in Gonzales on March 11 and was informed of the fall of the Alamo, he decided upon retreat to the Colorado River and ordered all inhabitants to accompany him. Couriers were dispatched from Gonzales to carry the news of the fall of the Alamo, and when they received that news, people all over Texas began to leave everything and make their way to safety.

Houston's retreat marked the beginning of the Runaway Scrape on a really large scale. Washington-on-the-Brazos was deserted by March 17, and about April 1 Richmond was evacuated, as were the settlements on both sides of the Brazos River. The further retreat of Houston toward the Sabine left all of the settlements between the Colorado and the Brazos unprotected, and the settlers in that area at once began making their way toward Louisiana or Galveston Island. The section of East Texas around Nacogdoches and San Augustine was abandoned a little prior to April 13. The flight was marked by lack of preparation and by panic caused by fear both of the Mexican Army and of the Indians. The people used any means of transportation or none at all. Added to the discomforts of travel were all kinds of diseases, intensified by cold, rain, and hunger. Many persons died and were buried where they fell. The flight continued until news came of the victory in the battle of San Jacinto on April 21, 1836. At first no credence was put in this news because so many false rumors had been circulated, but gradually the refugees began to reverse their steps and turn back toward home, many toward homes that no longer existed.

The War Between the States

C. S. Midkiff was enlisted as a Corporal in Co. K, 16 Texas Infantry (also known as Flournoy's Reg't Texas Inf. or 7 Reg't Infantry) at age 25 on April 1, 1862 at Madison County, Texas by J. R. Peel. Company Muster Roll indicated, "Number of miles to rendezvous 86." In July of 1862, F H's monthly pay as 4 Corporal was $13.00. He and his brother F H served in this company throughout the war together, finally surrendering at Hempstead, Texas on May 19, 1865.

At the Battle of Mansfield, they served under Colonel George Flournoy in the 1st Infantry Division commanded by John G. Walker. The battle was fought on April 8, 1864, just south of the town of Mansfield, Louisiana. The battle was part of the Red River Campaign, a Union effort to wrest control of the Red River and capture the City of Shreveport. Shreveport was the Confederate capital of Louisiana, a busy river port with an active cotton economy, the site of military industry, including ship and submarine construction, and the head of the Texas Trail. The capture of Shreveport would have allowed Union forces to enter Texas and crush the supplies moving from Texas, Mexico and western points to supply Confederate forces in the east.

The Battle of Mansfield saw the defeat of Union forces under the command of General Nathaniel Banks by Confederate forces commanded by General Richard Taylor. It was the last major Confederate victory of the Civil War.

Settlements

In 1890, Charly, as he was called, moved his family to Moran, Texas. He farmed this part of west Texas and raised a second family until his death at home in 1918. In his APPLICATION of Indigent Soldier or Sailor of the late Confederacy under the act of May 12, 1899, filed on July 14, 1899, sworn to and subscribed before a notary and County Judge, he wrote:

“I do not own any real estate. I have a couple of horses & a couple of cows under mortgage & a wagon also Im on mortgage”

In an Affidavit of Physician, sworn to and subscribed before a notary on February 25, 1914, Dr. J. K. Brittain, M.D., indicated:

“The said C. S. Midkiff is almost totally blind and is physically incapacitated from any kind of work on account of the loss of his sight.”

A MORTUARY WARRANT in accordance with Law passed by the Thirty-fifth Legislature of Texas in Regular Session, paid the full amount allowed, $30.00, to Mrs. M. E. Midkiff for funeral services.

Check thses records.

Tex

Is there anything showing that Isaac Jesse is Charles' father? I'm having trouble with the link. I have birth and/or death records from me up to 7 generations (Charles Sims). I have photos and other information showing Isaac's marriage to Mary Jones. I just can't find anything that shows Charles is his son other than what I've been told or other family trees. Frank was older than Charles? Is he the child listed in the 1835 Census Report from Nacogdoches?
Did Isaac and Mary get married in Cherokee County in 1833?

Sorry for all of the questions. Thanks for the help!
Jessica

I have a considerable amount of info on the Abraham Chaney line. I doubt your records of Sarah Midkiff are correct because she and Jacob Chaney's oldest son James was born before 1750. Their son, John Chaney, my ggg-g/father, was married December 28, 1886. This would make Sarah only 7 years old at the time. I have a copy of the minister's marriage bond for John Chaney and Susannah Hill dated 12-28-1786.

Yes, this is Mary Lou. Thanks for the information, but you are assuming that Isaac Preston is the father of Franklin Preston, and I have not found any proof of that theory. I have not found Franklin Preston in any written record prior to his appearing on the 1830 census in Lincoln County, Tennessee. He lives near Haisten Midkiff and an older John Midkiff at that time. I have always assumed they were relatives, but I have no proof of that either.

To put another two cents worth in from our Midkiff family line, I would like to say that Family Tree's genealogical DNA testing has proven a link from our line to the Isaiah Midkiff line, but the "link is still missing". I wonder if Thomas had, in addition to a daughter Sarah, a son named Franklin Preston Midkiff. Franklin Preston's first daughter was named Sarah Ann, which could mean she was named after her aunt Sarah. There are so many questions and so few answers, but if all lines will agree to be DNA tested the puzzle will soon begin to make sense.

I took the birth date from the death certificate. The informant was Harvey Winn, who I believe was Eliza's son, William Harvey Winn born 12 Oct 1901 Madison Co TX and died 28 Aug 1969 in Houston Rosewood General Hospital. He was a State Prison Guard and lived in Centerville, Leon Co TX. He is buried in Bethel Cemetery and his wife, Mrs. Harvey Winn was the informant on his death certificate.

Bethel Cemetery has been shown as being in Madison County and in Grimes County. I believe it is in Madison.

My reason for showing Cherokee County as the birth place for Francis Henry Midkiff is that 2 of his younger brothers (Charles Sims and Isaac Allen) are shown as being born in Cherokee County and that Sarah is the first child shown as being born in Bedias (1844) which may be incorrect as Isaac Jesse is shown living in Walker County Texas for the 1850 census and it is believed he moved to Grimes County shortly after the census and was there when he died in July 1851.

Isaac Jesse had family living in Cherokee County (Candace Midkiff Bean) until 1848 when she died.

His sister, Emily Midkiff married Samuel Turner in Nacogdoches County in 1839, they were in Jasper County by the time the 1850 census was taken and in Trinity County by 1860 census. Emily died May 1860 in Trinity County from Pneumonia. Death is from the mortality schedule.

These families moved around more than I thought our pioneers did so it is possible they could have been in Grimes County first then moved here and there before settleing in Grimes County. Also as I am sure you know many of our records have many many errors in them as in my own great grandmothers death certificate has her mother listed as a Haggard when it was really Ashmore. The informant was her son who must not have asked his mother what her name was!

~~B~~

Jerry,
I have reason to believe that Thomas Midkiff, born 1720, moved from VA to Surry Co, NC. He was found there in t he 1750's along with brothers Francis and Charles. Charles sold his land to the Morivians and "moved back to England". Grandson, Isaiah Midkiff, took a furlough from American Revolutionary service to go to Surry Co, NC to tend to a "family situation" but the records don't state exactly what that was. The area of Surry Co, NC fell under heavy Tory attacks during the war and it is my belief that Thomas Midkiff, born 1720, died in one of those Tory attacks and that is the reason that Isaiah went to Surry Co, NC. Isaiah continued to serve in the war but stayed in Surry Co, NC while he was not on active duty. I also think Francis Midkiff to have died in one of those Tory attacks also. Isaiah was serving with men who were Quakers until they joined the war and thus were excommunicated from their church.

Isaiah's brother, Thomas Midkiff, born about 1755, sold his land in Henry Co, VA in 1784 and moved to Surry Co, NC near Isaiah. Thomas had served in the 9th Regiment of the Virginia Line with the Isbell men you find listed as neighbors in Surry Co, NC. The Cloud families were also near neighbors.

I believe Sarah was either a daughter or sister of Thomas.

They already did it. Yours and ours are a perfect match! The reason being is because they are cousins. Thomas Midkiff and Isaiah Midkiff were brothers. Thomas's children: John, Jeremiah, Isaac, Sarah, Rachel and Jiney. Your ancestor being John and mine being Isaac. Isaiah was actually their uncle............

Is this Mary Lou Midkiff? This is Lisa Chatelain. I have an answer to your question. I have the will of Thomas Midkiff, born 1755, married to Ruth Pleasant(s). Named as children are: Rachel, Sarah, Jiney, Jeremiah, John and Isaac. It is is signed by Thomas Midkif and witnesses were Isaiah Midkiff and John Green. I believe my Isaac Preston Midkiff was the son of Thomas and that Isaiah was his uncle. That's what I believe but others insist that Isaiah was the father of Isaac. Now, were there two Isaac's or was my ancestor, Isaac, the son of this Thomas?

Mary Lou,
No, I'm not assuming Isaac was the father of Franklin, but instead the uncle. I think the John you mention is the same John listed as son of Thomas Midkiff. Children listed in the will of Thomas are Sarah, Rachel, Jiney, John, Jeremiah and Isaac. I also think our Isaac is this son mentioned in the will. I talked with a researcher who said he found a document in White Co, TN that lists Isaac's full name as Isaac Pleasant Midkiff. There is a lot of documentation pointing to Thomas as the father of Isaac and that most likely Isaac and the John you mention were actually brothers. This researcher I'm talking about is not an oldie on the net but a person who has done research for years. He said he went to the actual courthouses in TN, AR, LA and TX to get his actual information as well as the land offices in these states. He has way more information than I do.

Re: Cora Ray Midkiff of West Virginia

Cora Ray Midkiff's maiden name was Ray. It appears misleading because it looks like a middle name.
She was a schoolteacher in Lincoln County Schools.
She named the community of Pleasant View. She also named Guyan Valley High School (now Guyan Valley Middle School). She married Orlando Midkiff (Lando).
Her sons, Ray and Jennings are both deceased. Ray was married more than once. His first child Ray Lester Midkiff, died of Lieukemia when he was still quite small. Ray also had a daughter, Cora Ray Midkiff with Peggy Jo_____(not sure of the last name). Another of his children is Edgar J. Midkiff-he lives in the Griffithsville area. Ray had other children and spent his last years in Virginia.
Jennings graduated in the first class at Guyan Vally High and received both his master's and bachelor's at Marshall University. He served Lincoln County in many ways-as principal at Guyan Valley, County Clerk, Supt. of schools, and received many honors during his life.
He was married to Maxine Ruth Johnson Midkiff and they had three sons, Ray Leonard (retired coal miner), Paul Justus (retired linotype operator for a Cleveland newspaper), and John Allen, a former employee of Hunting Alloys and Allstate. Jennings married Mary Dailey after Maxine passed. Jennings(J.O. was what everyone called him) is deceased.
Ray Leonard married Gladys Gaylena Dial and they had two daughters, Paula Lynn Midkiff Nelson and Jil Alison Midkiff Donahue. Ray and Gaylena divorced each other twice, both have been remarried.Gaylena is a widow.
Paula Married Ronald Gene Nelson of Ranger and they had two children, Rebecca Cory Nelson Hatfield Shilot and Tyler Ray Nelson. Rebecca has two children, Seth Michael and Ella Elizabeth Shilot. She also has a stepdaughter, Lauren Kay Shilot.
I could also give further info about John and Paul's(Tiny)
families.
Your best bet about "Ole Mrs. Cory" as she was called is to contact Edgar (E.J.) Midkiff.

I am trying to locate my great grandfather George R Midkiff. He was born 1869 in Kentucky. He married Narcissus Wade and had one daughter Eula. Narcissus died in 1904. George then remarried and moved to possibly Arkansas. The only name I have for his new wife is maybe Hettie Appleby. Eula remained in Kentucky with relatives, Hettie had children but I do not know if they were of my gr. grandfather's or if they were step children. If anyone has any information, it would be greatly appreciated.

Yes Betty, but I have Elza born 3 MAR 1859. Also, do you have actual documentation that shows FH born in Cherokee County. I've always believed he was boern in Grimes County?

Tex

The lineage is correct as you have it. However, there are very few actual documents that prove it. The Midkiff's were not writers.

My ancestry is as follows:

Harold Glynn (Tex) Midkiff (b. 1950; m. 1971)

Father:	Elton Lee Midkiff (b. 1912; m. 1932; d. 1992)

Grandfather: Ernest Lucian Midkiff (b. 1890; m. 1911; d. 1962)

Great Gf: Christopher Columbus Midkiff (b. 1866; m. 1888; d. 1935)

G., G. Gf: Francis Henry Midkiff (b. 1834; m. 1856; d. 1911)

G., G., G. Gf: Issac Jesse Midkiff (b. 1810; m. 1833; d. 1851)

G., G., G., G. Gf: Isaac Preston Midkiff (b. 1778; m. 1800; d. 1822)

G., G., G., G., G. Gf:	Isaiah Midkiff (b. 1760; m. 1778; d. 1834)

Good luck,

Tex
Isaiah Midkiff (from Grainger, TN)

I'm researching information on my great grandmother's Midkiff family. My dad told me that we are related to Isaiah Midkiff (from the Revolutionary War), but I'm having a difficult time finding actual sources to prove this. My great grandmother's name was Hetty Imogene Midkiff. Her parents were Walter Emerson Midkiff and Sina Anna Hunt. Walter's parents were Thomas Davis Midkiff and Ida Bell Campsey. I haven't been able to find any sources after this. From other trees, I've found that Thomas' father was Charles Sims Midkiff. Charles father was Isaac Jesse. Isaac's father was Isaac Preston. and Isaac P's father was Isaiah. I would like to connect these if possible. Does anyone have any information they could share?

Jessica

I found some information in a family history of an Isaiah Midkiff marrying and Elizabeth Shepphard. If you do a recent search on ancestry, you should be able to find it. Hope this helps!

Sincerely,

Jessica
