Hi, My tree is public. The Benjamin and Joseph I have are based on birthdates taken from the IGI sources and have parents named in those sources as William & Mary.

Joseph was a carpenter and Benjamin a stone mason. He has a number of mentions in various trade directories for the area.

It looks like Joseph went off to Canada after 1851.

I also have another more detaile tree on My Heritage but that requires an email address to send an invitation to.

I would very much like an invite to view your tree as I have many Midwinter ancestors from Northleach. However the brothers Benjamin and Joseph in my tree were born at Winson not far from Northleach - I found their baptisms in the Gloucester Archive Centre and their parents were listed as Benjamin Midwinter and Joyce ??
We have now found a marriage certificate for Anne Midwinter (b 1810 Northleach) who married James Heath.

The certificate clearly states her father was William Midwinter a stonemason from Northleach.

My uncle and I think that this ties her closely to the tree we have published which shows Benjamin and Joseph as brothers, one was also a stonemason the other a carpenter.

Hi Laura, My husband David is also a great great grandson of Amos. Who are your parents, David's are Miriam and Arthur Midwinter. Arthur was the son of William and Fanny and William was the son of Amos. Amos and Sophia had 7 children altogether. If these are the same descendants as yours, please let me know. Is your Family History Public and if so can I connect to it? At the present time I do not subscribe to Ancestry and cannot access parts of it, but if you want to you can email me direct at lilian.midwinter@talktalk.net Hope to hear from you soon. My paternal grandmother Alberta June Kench Vance is her granddaughter through her daughter Edith Maude Grantham Kench. I found a photo of Amy and she looks almost exactly like myself, which is eery. I have some information, so please feel free to contact me. I live in Canada and Job, her father, moved here with his second wife.

Working with my Nephew,Frank Dutton, we have been able to establish the following which we think is correct.
If any one can verify, add or enlighten it would be great.
Anne(Heath) Midwinter. Born 1810 Northleach
Sarah Midwinter. Born 1807 Northleah
Benjamin Midwinter. Born Northleach 1805. Stonemason
Joseph Midwinter. Born 1799. Guiting Power
Hannah Midwinter. Born 1797. Guiting Power
Winifred Midwinter. Born 1795. Guiting Power
These were all the children of
William Midwinter. Born 1769.Born Letchlade.Stone Mason
and his wife
Mary who he married in 1794 in Guiting Power.
I understand William's parents may be William and Elizabeth

I am looking to find an connection with my Great, Great Grandmother who was Ann Midwinter.
She was born in 1811 and died 19.9.1866. She married James Heath and on her death was buried in St.Peter & St Paul’s Church Northleach Gloucestershire.
It is believed that she may have been related to William Midwinter who has a brass in Northleach Church dated 1550, presuming that W.M relates to him..
William Midwinter had lands levied to him in the area in 1484 from John Purlewyn and his wife Ann, who was the daughter and heir of John Doding.
It appears that William Midwinter may have married a judge’s daughter named Lemryke in about 1482. In 1493 William Midwinter was bailiff.
Rumor has it that William Midwinter, in the reign of Edward IV, sent 4 rams and 20 ewes to the King of Aragon and from these all the Merino sheep in Australia and South Africa are descended.
If you can connect with this I would be pleased to here from you

Hi Gemma,

There's Midwinters all round Oxfordshire - and in Oxford itself. My family came from Burford and later moved to Abingdon. There's several families in the 1800s in Oxford, keeping pubs and several more in the Ducklington area. There's even a 1700s midwinter who was "keeper of the chickens" at one of the Oxford Colleges who'd be a rather fun ancestor to have.
I collect Midwinters, so when you find out a bit more I may be able to help you. I reckon we're all related, somewhere way, way back in the 14th century!
Regards
Anne

Looking for ancestors of Kenneth Stanley Midwinter

I have just started researching my family histroy and am having a big problem with my mothers family.
Her father was Kenneth Stanley Archard (nee Midwinter) born circa 1918 in Camberwell, London. His natural parents were Stanley A Midwinter b:1887 (edmonton) and Nellie Alder b:1894/5 (walworth, london). Nellie died in 1918 in Camberwell and Stanley completly dissapears without trace.
I know that he was in the RAF (bus driver??) and that they married in Croydon in 1917 but cannot find out anything further about him.
I have requested a copy of his birth cert. but wonder if anyone has any information that would help.
I have some information on his adoptive parents, Nathaniel and Alice Archard , who were grocers in West-Ham, London, but cannot find any connection which would have lead to a possible adoption.

Here's hoping for some new leads.
Caroline

Anne,
Thanks for sending on the GEDCOM ( I will have to work out how to use it when i find it) -

Your Ernest P was shown as a pupil at St.Saviours College, Ardingley, Sussex during the 1901 Census.

My Stanley is also shown as a pupil here although he is listed as Hanley A Maianenter (someone either couldn't hear or couldn't read) but I am sure this is him as dob and pob are correct.

I have Alfred as marrying Lousia B ? also and I am sure this was a second marriage.

Many thanks for all your help.
Caroline

Hello again Anne,

I have had some time today to do a little more research and seem to have found a few interesting snippits.

Your Ernest P was born in 1889 in Cheshunt
My Stanley Alfred was born in 1887 in Edmonton (same reg. district as Cheshunt.)
Your Ernest P was born to Ernest V & ?
My Stanley A was born to Alfred James & Amelia Pardoe (this needs more thorough research)
Your Ernest V was born 1864, St. Jude, Southwark to Alfred and Fanny.
My Alfred James was born 1861 St.Jude, Southwark to Alfred and Fanny.
DO YOU THINK THEY ARE BROTHERS????

Alfred was born 1819 ish, he is quoted as having been born in Reading and Sonning, Oxfordshire - my research show Sonning and Reading are both in Berks. He married Fanny Puddicombe (born in Lambeth 1825 ish) in 1850 in West London.

Your Ernest P was living with Alfred and Fanny (grandparents) in 1891.
If my Stanleys mother was Amelia she died in 1888 and he then dissapears.

DO YOU THINK THEY ARE COUSINS???

Hope some of this makes sense, a GEDCOM of your Midwinters would be excellent - If I find anymore I will let you know.
Kind Regards
Caroline
Anne
Many thanks for the information. The Stanley Alfred Midwinter you mentioned had seamens records at the PRO is the same person. Having looked into registration districts Edmonton and Cheshunt were the same district. I have docs showing he was in the RAF in 1917 which ties in nicely with the PRO records. Only problem I have now is who his parents were and when he died (this is a vital piece of info that eludes me)
I'll keep looking,
Once again your help was greatly appreciated.
Caroline

No, Edmonton Middlesex, right? Sorry, I'm an ignorant colonial.
I can't find him in the 1901 census, but in the Seaman's Records at the PRO there is a Stanley Albert Midwinter b. 03 May 1887 in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire.
I've only got one other Midwinter (I collect Midwinters) born in Cheshunt and that is Ernest P. Midwinter, who was born about 1888. He is the son of Ernest Varnet (sic) Midwinter who is the son of Alfred Midwinter - and that's as far as I know on that line.
You can download a pdf of Stanley Albert's naval record but I don't think they have any family details on them. I've got a huge file of Midwinters (including the Ernests mentioned above) if you'd like a gedcom - but there's a lot of extranous ones in there!
Anne

I would think it quite possible that they were cousins - I wonder if Stanley Alfred was adopted in an unofficial way after his mother died? That'd be why he doesn't appear in the 1901 census as Stanley Midwinter, but for records where proof of ID was required, ie. military or marriage, he is recorded as Midwinter?
I have Alfred James as being married to Louisa Unknown. Their first child (or eldest surviving) was born about 1895, so I guess a second marriage.
Anyway, I've sent you the latest incarnation of my Midwinter (and associates) gedcom. I'm sorry, you'll have to wade through lots and lots of un-related Midwinters to get to yours

Re: Edward MIDWINTER, Oxford

Hi,

I'm afraid not - but I'd be very interested if you do find out anymore on his ancestors as 'my' Midwinters came from around the Oxford area. However, Edward was a fair bit posher than my 'ag. lab.' relatives, so I imagine it's not a close relationship.
One potential lead (or possibly a total red herring) is that Catherine's son Guy Midwinter was visiting the Hewitt/Hewett family in the 1901 census and Elizabeth Hewitt/Hewett's maiden name was Midwinter. However, her parents were Thomas and Elizabeth and she was born in London, so perhaps it's a total coincidence.
Regards
Anne

The only book I can find titled "The Round Tower" is by Catherine Cookson, which would NOT be the same thing at all.

Would you please have the ISBN for the book, as it will help in tracking it through second-hand bookshops? Thanks.

For anyone reading this thread - my partner is Christopher MIDWINTER, who is a direct descendant of the above-mentioned William MIDWINTER of Northleach (14x great-grandfather) - and I am interested in sharing any and all MIDWINTER information - however slight your connection may be.

Ruth Curtis
Adelaide, South Australia

Frederick was married with a boy and a girl. The son (Herbert Harrison) was killed in France, 1917.

Do either of them sound like possibles?

Anne

Re: Midwinters in Northleach

The Midwinters in Northleach go back to at least 1482. A William (Will) Midwinter shows up a lot from that period as he is mentioned frequently in a set of papers from the period (whose name currently escapes me) as a wool trader and something of a match maker.

I first became aware of him through a book that turned up recently in our family that had been given as a present by someone whose mother was Midwinter and seemed to think that she was descended from him (which seems likely but is far from proven yet as I have only just started looking into it properly). The book is "The Round Tower" by Reginald Arkell, a fictional novel, but very locally set and based around the Midwinter family. The 1482 Will Midwinter gets a mention.

Nicholas Adams

saw your posting about Charles Midwinter. I am trying to find out more about a Charles born in Birmingham in about 1900. I can find him on 1901 census with mother Laura, but nowhere else.
Is this the same Charles?

I love your 4 x great grandmother's name!
If I find anything I'll let you know, I'm a bit of an obsessive Midwinter collector.

Hi,
I've got an Elizabeth Midwinter of about the right age (b 1746), in Burford, which is about 5 miles down the road. Problem is I don't know whom she married.
There were Midwinters all around that area, so I can't promise that your Elizabeth is the same as mine (my 4x great aunt). I can send you a rather unwieldy gedcom if you're interested.
Anne Midwinter
