Sorry I haven't checked Ancestry.com in ages, as I traveled to Serbia, Bosnia and Croatia in 2009. It is unlikely that I can help your friend research his grandfather's family. My grandfather was born in Erdut, Croatia; his father's name was Filip. Radomir may have been from Kraljevo, not Kraluvo, which is in Central Serbia.

This may be too late for you to help us in view of time scales since first post. I am trying to help a family friend research his grandfather's family. His name was Radomir Mihajlovic and he was born in 1920 in serbia in Kraluvo.
He moved to the UK where he married and had 2 sons.He passed away in the 1990s.
If there is any help you can possibly offer us to track down any records or assistance in anyway that would be great as we have no idea how to progress further to access records. Thankyou

My family name is Mihailovic, or Mihajlovic.

My father was born in 1917(?) in Sabac (village of )Tabanovic) about 70 km west of Belgrade on the Sava river.

His father's name was Radovan.

My father emigrated to Australia in the 1950s, and I was born here in 1961. there are still several Mihajlovic's living in Sabac.

If anyone feels they can shed some light on my father's family prior to the early 1900s, it would be great.

Kind regards,

Boris

Milorad Mihajlovic

My paternal grandfather was named Milorad Mihajlovic. In the US, his first name would be Michael. He was born in 1896 and emigrated to the United States in November 1921 with my grandmother, Zorka Culic Mihajlovic. Ellis Island records indicate they lived in Erdut (Croatia?) before arriving in the US. My father was born in Detroit in 1925, but Milorad left the family, or my grandmother divorced him, at that time. My father never met his father, nor could learn anything about him from the Culic family.

My great-grandparents, Stefan and Danica Culic, indicated they were from Stapar. Their oldest son, Rade, arranged the marriage between Milorad Mihajlovic and my "Majka." It is rumored Rade had to "cross a valley" to find Milorad Mihajlovic to marry his sister. So, I am not sure where exactly Milorad might have come from, but it probably was fairly near Stapar.

I have searched the social security death index, so if Milorad stayed in the US, he did not get a social security number under either Milorad or Michael. I wonder if he went to Canada, or returned to the old country. Any help would be greatly appreciated. It could be that we have relatives here or abroad, and it would be nice to build that side of the family tree.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Mira Mihajlovich

My grandfather was named Milorad Mihajlovich; he emigrated to the United States in November 1921. Ellis Island records indicate he and my grandmother (Zorka Culic Mihajlovic) were from Erdut, which I understand is in Croatia. My great-grandparents were Danica and Stefan Culic, and they were from Stapar, I believe. I remember "Majka" singing the song "Srem, Srem, Srem - divanje kiceni Srem." Either Milorad left or my grandmother divorced him in 1925 when my father was born. My grandmother would never talk about him, nor allow her family to talk about him. So we know nothing except the following. His family may have owned a vineyard (or worked one). He was born in 1896. We do not know if Milorad stayed in the United States, returned to then-Yugoslavia, or went someplace else. In America, his name would be "Michael." If anyone could help me with this quest, I would be very grateful. I am planning a trip to Serbia (and other areas?) in July 2008 and would like to find any relatives I may have to visit. Thank you!

Mira Mihajlovich

Hi

My mother's maiden name is Mihajlovic, and her father was Vladimir (b. 1908), from Srem in the old Serbia, which is pretty close to Belgrade. Srem is actually a sort of region, rather than a town. I know that my grandfather's father's name was also Vladimir, and that he married Katharina (my namesake), but I've never discovered what her maiden name was. There is a rumour in our family that he (my great-grandfather) was a prince or some kind of royalty from the Austro-Hungarian Empire, but I am yet to prove that. I know that my grandfather was the eldest of about 14 kids, and he ran away from home at the age of ten and lived in the forest in Yugoslavia. He then became a boot maker, and married my grandmother, Elisabeth Reidl (Bavarian/German) in the 1930s, and then they emigrated here to Australia in 1950.

Perhaps we have a common ancestor Brad or Heather?

Kat

Re: Researching MIHAJLOVIC / MIHAJLOVICH Surname

The use of permanent last names in Serbia and Balkan lands where Serbs used to live, has been common in last 150 years. Before later half of 19th century the last name has been Ftaher's name with an -ic or -ov added as a trailer. The only constant has been the tribe (pleme) or fraternity (bratstvo) name. For instance, my ancestors were members of Vasojevic tribe, Vasaric fraternity and they picked for permanent last name Mihajlovic in honor of my grate grand father Mihajlo (Michael). The letter "h" did not exist in serbian alphabet and "k" was used instead. At the begining of the 20th century Serbs started to adopt "h" which has been imported into Serbian language by Vuk Karadzic, (Big reformer of Serbian language). Slavs in general did not use "h". For example, today's Russians would instead of "Hitler" say "Gitler".
One thing for sure, Mihajlovic last name is used only by native Serbs and not by naturalized Serbs. After the liberation from Turkish domination, many wealthy Turks refused to sell their possesions and relocate to Turkey. By simply converting to Orthodox Christianity and adopting Serbian name and nationality, they were allowed to remain in Serbia. The names given to Turkish converts were Jovan, Petar and Pavle, (John, Peter and Paul) and the last names given were Jovanovic, Pavlovic and Petrovic. These wealthy Turks lived in the big cities, like Belgrade, Nis or Kragujevac.

We are most likely not relatives.

Among Montenegreen Serbs instead Mihajlovic, Mihailovic is comonly used, ("j" is replaced by "i").
